Where are the shanties?

  • Most shanties are older than the concept of copyright protections, there is genuinely no reason other than laziness that they haven't added more shanties yet. Unlockable shanties are genuinely one of the biggest motivators for me. I only played pirates life for the shanty. Genuinely, I only became pirate legend for the shanty. Monkey island, purely for the shanty.
All for me Grog, A Health to the Company, Ballad of Captain Kidd, Blow the Man Down, Henry Martin, Neptune’s Raging Fury, Down Among the Dead Men, Spanish Ladies, We Be Three Poor Mariners, just to name a few.

  • And to add to this: We should be able to choose to play the PL hideout and Reapers lair shanties whenever we want (after you've unlocked them of course)

  • @potatosord
You can! Just hold the instrument, go to item menu, press shanties, and you can keep clicking "more" until you find the song!

  • @shadowfox327533 You can play We shall sail together, Yo Ho, and Monkey Island theme, yes, but not the songs that let you into the pirate legend hideout or the reapers lair

  • @potatosord
We Shall Sail together IS the song that lets you go into the pirate legend hideout.

  • @shadowfox327533 No, it's not. The Shanty of Legends is what lets you in. They are two separate shanties.
    We shall sail together
    Shanty of Legends

  • @potatosord
I play we shall sail together and it opens Athena Fortune, and the Shanty of Legends is just another name for We Shall Sail Together, though I could be mistaken.

  • Shanty of Legends is the last refrain from We Shall Sail Together... Appropriate given it's the last step to becoming Pirate Legend. It's not even listed as a separate shanty on the Wiki.

(Fun fact: did you know We Shall Sail Together is based on Drunken Sailor but set to 6:8 time)

there is genuinely no reason other than laziness

Really underestimating the work that goes into the shanties in Sea of Thieves, and that the music team are always working on compositions for future content.

Each shanty has four instruments (five, if you count the whistle on the drum lead track) and each of those instruments has 3 variations: lead, accompaniment, and drunk*. At good enough quality, that's a lot of data to use.

(*underwater may be another variation but that could also be done in-engine, not sure)

And then we get on to engine memory constraints and, while the game does stream some elements now to help with this, it's still a consideration. Adding a shanty may mean having to cut something else to free up memory.

My guess is that they will add more shanties but, just like with the POTC and Monkey Island shanties, it will only be to celebrate certain content.

  • @shadowfox327533 I gave you links. Click the links. Listen to the difference. They are not the same song.

  • @realstyli I would rather have more shanties than have Eternal guards or Molten sands.

  • @potatosord
    Ok.

They literally are though. Listen to 1:48 onwards in the longer video. I told you, the "Shanty of Legends" is just the last refrain from "We Shall Sail Together" (It's even called that in the video you linked)... and while we're on this topic, the one that opens up the Reaper's Hideout lair is from "Who Shall Not Be Returning".

I wouldn't. I think the Eternal Guards are the best bosses we've had in a long time and I love fighting them. Molten Sands, I could take it or leave it, I think that island design itself needs work so it's less of a pain to empty... but very little of it is new though. It's mostly re-used content.
