Black Screen ruins solo

  • I've been playing SOT since the beginning. I love the games to bits but I also like to play solo on a sloop. Yes it's risky playing solo, but I've done it before doing an Athena.
I have no problems soloing but one thing that really ruins it is the Black screen.

I was at the end of my Athena when I left Ruby's Fall, of course a skeleton ship came along, I was doing well until I got knocked off my ship, mermaid pretty fast but I was on the black screen for a good 6 minutes, counting exactly! Of course when i got back. Sunk. Everything had despawned and bye bye Athena.

The black screen ruins it for me everytime and it really puts me off playing the game. Any suggestions or are we stuck with this?

  • as far as I know there is nothing you can do on your end to shorten the loading screen

all you can do is to take precautions as a solo slooper to minimize it

For example with megs you go underneath when they charge and anchor when they spawn (if your're going to kill them) so your boat doesn't move away from you if you're knocked off and you won't need a mermaid

On skelly ships you have to be more careful than with a crew you really have to time cannon shots and securing yourself in a spot where you can't get knocked off

Solo sloop is hard mode and is unforgiving of deaths and being knocked off

You can eventually get to a point where it isn't as much of a problem other than the series of unfortunate events that occasionally occur but that happens to everyone eventually

  • What platform are you playing on? Because it's a known fact that Console loading screens on average tend to be longer than PC loading screens.

  • @wolfmanbush I'm usually cautious and do everything in my power to keep my ship away from rocks and the skellys. I know you're running around like a headless chicken to get things done but I don't care! That's the fun in the game!

It's just the waiting to get back to your ship, you know what your about to come back to when you mermaid, either a nearly sunk ship, which I'd happily take over a sunk one. I got everything repaired when I got thrown over, but waiting 6 minutes to get back to your ship...That's sad.

I know it's a lot for a solo slooper to not get their ship sunk but waiting on something that isn't their fault kind of sucks? We all get thrown of the ship time to time, but normlly black screens are kind to me and I'm back instantly, I've times where It's 10 minutes long! But I was at the end of my Athena, and I spawned at Golden sands when my loot was at Devil's roar.

It just sucks but I won't give up on the game lol.

  • I averaged loading screens around 10s (no longer than 15-20s) when I was on a mechanical drive (7200rpm WD Black), and they are basically all less than 7s on my SSD. I can't even remember the last time I had an infinite black screen. The main cause is drive loading speed, and the black screen gets longer if it has to load additional changes while it's loading the scene (like if you are in combat).

  • @blam320 Xbox, sometimes the black screen can be kind and I'm back on my ship within an instant. I always thought it was due to my internet connection?

  • @d3adst1ck Oh I see! I'm on console maybe it might be that? 15-20 seconds! Damn!

It's definitely due to hardware, not connection. I have a pretty fast SSD on my Desktop, and loading screens are never longer than a few seconds. Consoles tend to use... less stellar hardware, let's say, to keep the price down.

  • @blam320 Sounds about right for console! I'm nearly level 10 athena, just have to keep trying! Thanks for the chat anyway, I was super annoyed after losing my loot lol.

  • @omgitsapiggy276 If you get a decent external drive you'll probably get much better loading times than using the in-console 5400rpm drive. The new Series S/X consoles don't have this problem because they come with an SSD drive.

  • @d3adst1ck I was thinking of buying the new series! I currently have the Xbox One S, it was a beaut at the start until now, time for an upgrade!

  • @omgitsapiggy276 you will definitely appreciate the new Xbox series with their NVMe SSD's. I switched from a standard SSD on my PC and dropped from 7 seconds to a little over 1 second going through the ferry door to being on my ship.

  • @kommodoreyenser Sounds promising! Definatly will do a switch soon.

Maybe upgrade to series x, or the cheaper way I did the last 2 years...buy a SSD and copy SoT onto that...just need a 128GB SSD (smallest size external storage so you can use it for games)
You will be blasted how fast it goes with a SSD
