Ability to spend doubloons on +1 Athena too?

  • Hey all,

So we can spend doubloons once a month on all the factions, but what about if we could do the same on athena levels, but ONLY when we reach pirate legend the option becomes available?

Obviously this is person dependant on who wants to spend doubloons on this, but at least having the option there would be good, just like the others are there.

Yes, not everyone would use it, I get that but not everyone uses the same one's currently in the store, but having the option for ALL factions is a good idea I think.

  • Hard no from me, I want to earn my levels as Athena, not do it the easy way.
The other companies I'm fine with having Letters of Recommendation (except for the Sea Dogs).

Athena levels should be something you have earned, shows that you worked hard to reach level 10 or 20 even.

  • Yeah, with the new emissary system, getting Athena rep is already quite easy and fast compared to "the old days".

I mean an Ashen Athena chest, with a 250% boost, and you get more or less a level up. We made 2 Athena missions, and got two chests sold at was it 15k+ plus the bonus emissary missions with trinkets and legendary kegs (also with bonus).

EDIT: With the (now gone) ashen tuesday bonus (double gold/exp for ashen loot), and emissary 5 we got a total value of around 43K per ashen athena chest. (I think that got me from level 12 to 13, a more or less complete ring on the level counter.

EDIT 2: I digress... my answer is a BIG no to buying Athena levels with doubloons. They have lost their value due to inflation (you get them everywhere and from anything nowadays.)

  • Only way this would make sense would be to have an appropriate doubloon amount for a level. The only other Athena doubloon reference is Athena Runs. Since an Athena Run costs 50 doubloons and you would need a couple hundred of those to go from 1-20 (without counting grade 5 emissary voyages or regular Athena voyages) I think it would need to be 2-3k doubloons per level to even make sense and still fall under the 1 per update rule.

  • Hell No.

  • @menphuess

No, emissary makes the grind super easy, and you can still level it up without emissary. No reason for the letters.

  • I mean I would be up for it but only if rare made it where you would only be able to buy maybe a quarter of a level.

  • I've heard this topic before so I'll give the same response.

No, it makes it way too easy and why would Duke, some tavern drunk, have any influence over the Pirate Lords own company?

  • I get it, some of you want to earn your levels, but think it’s okay for the others to remain, what if someone said “even they should be removed because I want to earn my levels” it’s the same thing at the end of the day.

Giving the player the choice what they do with doubloons is better. Just because it’s there, does not mean everyone has to use it... it’s player specific, you want to earn them, you do that! I want to purchase, I can do that. It’s the same either way because it’s all cosmetic.

    That is my point above.

Slightly off. I must be doing something wrong then. I been doing the thieves haven run and it’s barely any XP I find. I’ve farmed two at the same time and did not get a level at all with the max flag... or is there another way that is better than this to level Athena. I am level 11 because I stopped the grind because it took so long, I did not have the time.

Only pick up the athena items, if you pop a gem or firebomb crate, leave it immediately.
Always get the red and green light to grab the shadow skeletons skull in chapters 2 and 4.
When the mega keg skelly spawns in chapter 5 after you shoot his legs out, don't forget he drops an ancient skull as well.

If you do it all right and quickly, it should only take about 45 minutes at most solo. Spend some extra time and stop at the small islands on your way back and forth on chapter 2 and 4 for captains/ashen key master and guardians to get your flag grade up. Any skelly ship in the area that does not run is a good target as well. The other option to this is to do another athena run and just stop when you hit grade 5 about halfway thru.

Not sure if you can still chain Grade 5 athena voyage anymore but if you can, thats the next step if you have time. Turn in all your athena run treasure, grab grade 5 voyage, lower and raise the flag, and then complete grade 5 voyage. Turn in all grade 5 voyage treasure, grab ANOTHER grade 5 voyage, lower and raise the flag, and then do your new grade 5 voyage. Keep doing this as time allows and rank up the fastest possible way.

I will try to follow this best I can because I really want my levels and will be doing a chunk of it over this weekend.

Just need to remember the last part about lowering and then raising again.

If I cannot keep doing grade 5... then I guess the normal, do thieves haven, get to 5... cash in, do voyage, cash in, lower and raise or at that moment I might as well keep the grade 5 up and just stack items right?

They should remove the letters of recommendation period. Its useless to keep in game and serves no point.

Just because you have doubloons doesn't mean you should get to spend it to make your grind easier. "OH hey I have doubloons, how about the game just lets me use it so I can max all my levels? That sounds reasonable right?" No it doesn't.

You think it takes forever to grind up athena's?? It doesn't, not to mention athena's is suppose to be the end game Reputation, but you want to make it easier to gain? How about no.

    That is my point above.

I remember grinding the Athena's after they nerfed emissary and I got about half a level to a quarter of a level after each Theives Haven run and about the same after each Emissary quest.

If you think a quarter for a level is "LOW" then you really need to remove your self proclaimed expectations of how much you should get per item.

Just play the game, do the quests, level it up.

  • I'm admittedly in the boat of not caring. I personally wouldn't end up using them just as I haven't for the other Factions, but I also recognize that it is all generally meaningless.

I'd also make the argument that the ways for getting Dubloons are also indeed playing the game - and I have no qualms of the team being of the mind that we should be able to equate some of that "side" work towards our progress in the "main" stuff - as folks say "just play the game and you'll get there" which also applies to people wanting to do the more esoteric tasks and use that as their way to move forward (or speed it up anyways).

I've never been on the camp of "I did it the hard way so you have to as well" cause I'm ok with things moving forward. It is much like my stance on real life, if things can be easier for subsequent generations I have no problems with that. Wishing someone to suffer something solely because you also had to just seems silly to me. I'd rather see people not have to suffer in ways I've had to.

So yea, if they decide to add this no sweat off my back. If they don't, also wouldn't impact me in any way.

Completely agree but as you can see by the comments here, lots of people seem to go an al about it and value that their negative opinion is the best one.

Each person is entitled to it and each person is entitled to play this purely cosmetic game the way they want.

Me, I would like to purchase a level with doubloons! Why? Because I can, because I want too, because I do not have the time to sit in front of this grinding game and farm like most likely with no job, family or kids, also it’s a game that I play how I like, when I like and does not effect anyone but myself at the end of the day. . That’s my answer for those people :)

  • Yep, I'd totally agree. If the Pirate Lord wants to accept letters from the Bilge Rats about how "properly pirate" folks are like the rest of the companies do, wouldn't be any problem in my book. If your story involves more sitting in thrones and lighting beacons, and less chicken and cargo deliveries for your Merchant journey, so be it. You still played the game and did things to get there.

If we held to the standards that some out there have, we should get rid of Cargo for Merchants and Ghost Ships for the OoS, others had to do it by killing swarms of skeletons or by delivering animals only. And those arguments boil down to "they shouldn't have options that I didn't" which opens a whole can of worms. Why not go back to launch state at that point.

Every single change is gonna change the flow, and this is a game as a service which means changes are gonna happen. It doesn't change your journey or what you personally accomplished in any way.

Let the game grow, especially in an area that does nothing to disturb the balance of things with all players being equal or go against the spirit of the horizontal progression mantra.

  • Rare can you please just make it so new players just start at pirate legend athena lvl 20 it's too hard
