Betrayal to the highest degree...

  • I understand the concept of Sea of Thieves, you plunder and loot and maybe attack some other pirates for their treasure. I also know people know about honor amongst thieves... these guys had none whatsoever... My friend and I just started playing today and we picked the biggest ship just to see what it was like. Surprisingly, we could drive the ship with just 2 of us. It was a challenge, but it was fun. My friend had to go AFK and we were starting to be attacked by a 4 man crew. I was able to successfully evade them and drive the boat using all of the sails and steering it by myself for a good solid 15 minutes or so. I also dealt with repairing the ship while the ship sort of went straight blindly as I did the repairs. They eventually caught up because they were in the medium sized boat and they realized I was by myself. They ask to form an alliance and we had some laughs about the attack and they thought there were 8 people, but it was me and my AFK friend.

They thought it was cool I could drive it by myself and evade them for so long. Anyway, long story short my friend eventually came back we all decided to do a raid together and have fun. During this we were attacked by other people and one of them stole our ship while we were on the island fighting the skeletons still. During all of this I died and got my ship back and I drove it all the way back to the island. They ended up beating it by the time I got there. The rest of them respawns with the mermaid to go get their ship and one of them stayed behind. We used my friends and I big boat to put all the loot on and we all agreed to meet at an outpost. We unloaded the boat so we could split the treasure amongst both the teams.

Eventually, The other three show up and team up with their long lost friend who was with us and all of a sudden we see our ship being attacked and they betrayed us and killed us while sinking the ship to claim all of the loot for themselves. We went through all of that for them just for that? I understand this can happen, but like there is no honor amongst thieves in this game? They should have a timer where they can't attack us for about 30 minutes after disbanding the alliance or something just so they can use new people to their advantage like that... I was really having fun, and now I might not ever pick the game back up again. The game was an amazing experience until all of that happend. Anyway, good job Rare with making another great game. I've loved y'all since Perfect Dark, Banjo Kazooie and Donkey Kong 64.

First thoughts that came to mind :)

Alliance does not mean friend, but you know that. You can attack people in your alliance at anytime, so not sure about the 30 minute timer. Some crews use it to track boats they will sink later, giving them time to gather loot.

It can be very profitable when you get a good alliance set up though. Unfortunately, there’s no way to know who will betray you. It feels like I go though a mile long check list to prevent it (how they play, how they park, how many, etc) and still end up on the losing end sometimes. It’s the part of the game that keeps it interesting though.

  • Ouch. I am sorry to hear about this ill fate.

Besides the beauty, the salty sea waves slapping against your ship, and the desire for treasure there are darker more sinister motivations. This is what makes SoT great as the stories, experiences, and gameplay are unique with each playthrough. These players definitely had their ducks in a row the moment you both started raiding and this is definitely an outcome that happens. The uncertainty of a crew's intentions is always a "what if" in a game like this. But that is the highs and the lows of the experience. Some days you'll end up playing the most clutch and amazing experience of your life and others you'll be sunk into the deep blue sea.

Being a new player, here are some suggestions:

    1. Practice and master your ship. Fiddle around with the sails, understand how the speed differs depending on how many sails are deployed, master the art of calculating the anchor drops to do galleon sharp turns. I'm impressed you were able to give them chase for a full 15 minutes solo!

    2. Engage in PvE but I would also suggest to dedicate a few games to strictly pvp even if it's not your ale so to speak. It's important to learn the tactics that people use during ship battles and how to counter them and that takes pvp experience. Starting a game with the thought of engaging all ships means you don't lose anything but you'll gain a lot in experience.

    3. I also suggest looking for players in the discord sea of thieves community. There is a lot to be had joining with pirate legends and experienced folk too.

    Good luck out there!

  • Never trust anyone. Don't sail a boat 1 man, or certainly not 2 men, down, in an alliance. Easy defeat. Surprising they let you live that long.
As Far as never playing the game again, it's your loss mate. such a great game, you just learned the hard way. Next time you won't be so trusting.

  • @sprungnickel427 I'm playing again. I've learned my lesson and now I be a pirate of the seas myself! I'm friendly until given a reason not to be. If ye start heading for my ship we start blasting ye out the water and boardin' ye ship! Prepare for death if ye dare! lol

  • @agent-molasses Welcome back. It's just too good to not try again. I usually shoot after shot upon. Somethings that's too late. If they're gonna ram you, fire full blast.

  • Dont give em a chance to betray your crew, keep an eye on everything everytime, and it will put u to the crew who rule the ally, if they start betray stop it sink them sell all loot on ur own. Always keep an eye on everything

  • ahaha gj those 4 pirates :D
That's good story to learn from your mistakes like:

    • galleon for 4 people
    • afk = bad
    • alliance = "not friendship"

Been there done that, trust only those who prove to be trustworthy.

  • My crew had a similar thing happen yesterday. We saw a galleon doing a fort and they shot someone over and we killed them trying to board and they killed one of our crew. They talked on the Ferry of the Damned and we decided to alliance if we just leave the fort to them. We sail up close and alliance and we leave to do our own thing.

Other team finishes the fort and we sail out to do the skelly ship cloud boats. Other team turns their fort loot in and then sails out to us just after we finished the skelly ships.

The loot is in the water and they complain we hadn't turned in anything yet. They kill two of us in the water trying to gather the loot and so begins the gally on gally battle.

They jump on our boat and start dropping kegs while we are lighting them up with cannonballs.

In the end, both ships sunk and we were able to drop our rowboat and killed the stragglers in the water and able to recover all the loot minus 4 skulls we previously had on our ship.

My teammates rowed it to an island and turned it in and the other team ended up getting nothing.

Guess they got the karma they deserved...

  • I had a crew do that to me today. I was trying to finish up some quests in the volcanoes solo so I gladly took the alliance to help get through them. They helped finish my quest line and immediately sunk my ship. They did not kill me right away so I was able to talk to them still. They were surprised that I wasn’t mad about it. I told them the jokes on them because there’s no way I was getting through my quests solo. I already have a half million in gold so I didn’t need the loot. I only needed the quest completion for the ashen gear. So yeah they made off with maybe 10000 in loot or so but I’ve got my ashen gear and doubloons from their help.

Basically all I’m saying is have your own intentions whenever you join an alliance and you will not be let down
