Use your imagination they say

  • As I sit and watch my 9 year old try and play this game, he gets frustrated from lack of things to do.

So as many here suggested ( countless times) I told him to use his imagination. Problem is he tries, but can't do anything he imagines.

    For example,

He wants to sword fight using snakes,

Ride on the back of a shark and race his friends,

Sneak up on a sleeping kraken and draw a funny face on it

    Design his own ships

    Make his own weapons

    Have cliff diving competitions

    Create his own dance moves

    Create his own music

    And the list goes on....

So if a big part of the game is creating your own adventure, but your unable to.Use your imagination but the game does not allow you to do so.

Why do people keep saying that you should try using your imagination and create your own adventure when the game does not allow you to do so?

  • Um ... as much as I think your boy has awesome imagination unfortunately you have to use your imagination with the tools provided. However limiting they may be.

  • Just because you don't get rewarded for it doesn't mean you can't do it.
You say cliff diving competitions, you can jump off a cliff all darn day if you want to, you can even do it with 3 friends who will rate your epic 360 no scope dive.

But I think you just want to say that there is no aditional content over the content you don't like, then why did you get the game in the first place? do some research next time, save yourself some money.

I didn't buy it, his grandparents bought it for him.

  • @ruthless4u You let your 9 year old son play an online game with a lot of toxic talking players? I'm not telling you how to parent, but I wouldn't let my nephew close to this game and he's 8.

  • Excellent point.

I totally agree with your kid in here. A lot of games have opportunities to do things just based on your imagination. Like comparing to a lot older game called TES V: Skyrim. You could basically roleplay orc warrior living in wilderness and have fun for hours. Ofc Skyrim had way more immersive game world with a lot of NPC characters and wildlife. Imagination is great addition to games that are based on adventure and sandbox but SoT world is small and all islands are usually the same. Couple snakes and skeles to crush and those cave complexes are empty 99% of time.

Parenting works multiple ways. Teaching people the words/what they mean at a younger ages, gives them the knowledge to not use them at an older age or use them as an insult entirely. Sheltering the children provides them with lack of the knowledge of the words, creates curiosity and when they hear it from someone else instead of you, they think it is ok to say. OP is ok so long as he teaches the child right from wrong. A program shouldn't decide that for you.

  • I Love chucking a bucket of water on a campfire and imagining it going out 🙈

Thats why parental controls were added though in all fairness, why should his boy miss out because other people are immature. If it was my son i would just lock down the account and keep it monitored.

Wow, really? That's some sheltered life you giving your kids. It's a pirate game, it "should" be heaven for an 8 year old. Just mute or monitor chat whilst he/she plays and let them have some fun. Jeez (If fun is actually possible in the current state)

  • So the OP does not play, but his son does? If that is wrong please let me know. If that is right, please play the game some yourself and get back to us.

    I am having a blast!

Regardless of my stance on the discussion, the game is rated teen by the ESRB which makes it a 13+ title.

You aren't wrong in your statement but then neither is the other guy.

  • The game is fine for kids, just monitor their interactions with other players. People can be very rude on this game and extremely bad sports.

As far as imagination: People say that because the game really does not have much to do within it yet. I've done it all: I've teamed up with other players to sail in a fleet but the game never had systems in place to encourage that more, I've cleared galleons, stolen forts solo, stowed away on ships, leapfrogged from ship to ship using each one to crash into the next, played minigames with my crew like having 3 players get drunk then use pistols to try and shoot me carrying an explosive barrel. I love this game but I hate it at the same time. The criticisms about it are pretty accurate. It's a very, very limited sandbox and what is there to do isn't all that fun most of the time. Saying use your imagination is a crutch for weak systems and gameplay loops and a very shallow sandbox.

It's also got DayZ syndrome, it's potentially hours of boredom that switches to high intensity when everything finally comes together in a crescendo. That moment when you have a ton of treasure and you're being chased by two ships, you jack the sloop, ram it into another chasing teamed up sloop and kill everyone sinking both ships in the process and saving your crew and treasure. Those moments are what I play for but I can't lie, if I didn't win PvP often I'd probably hate this game.

Literally no form of entertainment works like that, even when some imagination is required or even encouraged.

D&D requires imagination, but that doesn't mean you can make yourself an immortal lion tamer who wields a magic electric guitar.
Skyrim lets you enter a fantasy world with a huge variety of roles to play, but you can't become a Space Ranger.
Books lets you imagine the worlds described to you, but you don't decide what happens on the next page.
Even "Create your own Adventure" novels take place within a branching, but restrictive narrative.

Sea of Thieves is a Pirate fantasy game, and everything we imagine ourselves doing, and are capable of doing, has to exist within the confines of a Pirate fantasy world.
When people say "use your imagination", you have to remember the reality of the game we're playing. Of course we can't race sharks, or duel with snakes, or sadly even compose our own dance routines.

I won't hold any of this against your kid; He was told "be creative" and he sure is very creative, and that's awesome.

I'm fairly certain none of us could comprehend AAA game development when we were 9, so no one holds this against him.
But why are you here arguing about this? Surely you understand why creating our own dance moves, using snakes for swords and drawing faces on Krakens, aren't actually realistic expectations to have?

And to be clear; Sea of Thieves is rated T, or PEGI 12, meaning your son's still a few years off the recommended age group, so I would encourage you to consider this as well, and absolutely mute other crews when he plays.

  • @jacksonio Never said it was my kid, it's my nephew.
If the game was singleplayer it would be perfect for him, but multiplayer is a no go until he's 12, for good reason.
In the end my nephew wouldn't play much on it anyway, he enjoys playing soccer outside with his friends more than being on a tablet or pc.
Maybe it's because his parents and me are pretty oldschool like that (we're 80's kids)

  • @ruthless4u your son is right, the make your own fun argument is weak since the game lacks the mechanics to do alot.
its just pretty, nothing kids usually care about and ild suggest you give him something more challenging to play with, like minecraft or factorio if he can handle it.

you arent doing his development any good by having him play sea of thieves. he just seems to not be easy to please, dont listen to the people saying this game is so great and that something is wrong with your son, he's probably just smarter than them.

  • if a CHILD has no imagination, it is the parents' fault.

That’s a lesson most of the world needs to learn lol!

  • @toastywrath In an age where technology is mostly a babysitter, you'd figure this would all be mandatory at this point.

  • @kashaarafall it isn’t something people just inherently know. You have to be tought it in the first place. Which unfortunately isn’t commonplace:p

Maybe one day when people actually use the wealth of information provided for more than just meme videos XD (guilty of that)

  • @toastywrath This is true! The reason I stopped using Xbox 360 online was the amount of kids using profanity/calling me their bi()not gonna swear and speaking illy of my mother =P. I questioned how their parents let them do it, to which I got responded. "I do what I want, moms don't control me!" So yeah. It doesn't fix it by avoiding it mind you, but I didn't exactly like it either =P.

  • @ruthless4u I strongly disagree, he should play another game I guess, not tryng to offend at all, but I don't see this game to be a fun playgroung allround like riding sharks to race or creating your own dancing... it should keep pointing to pirate things to do, npc ships to steal, npc ships thats persuit your ship after grabbing their chest on their island, new quests, new enemy types, bosses, weapon variety and rewards to go after.

  • @ruthless4u Your son has a great imagination, I hope he grows up to be a games developer.

  • @vapingbad93 boi ur dense, username checks out

  • @eatdamuffin using your imagination is not something supposed to be done when playing a video game. Our grandparents probably told our parents "Use your imagination" when playing with a rock and stick. Being creative is a job for a "Creative team" they are supposed to "Create" and be "imaginative" I didn't feel a need to use my imagination in Arkham Knight or Fallout 4 or Rise of the Tomb Raider. Those games were cluttered with side missions and ways to have fun without "Using your imagination" I agree if you need to say 'use your imagination" about a video game that in all likelihood spells a failure by the Development team. The creative team should always be more creative than the common gamer.

  • @dickeyhugey agreed, show your son Tomb Raider and Arkham Knight. They are games that will reward his creativity by letting him immerse himself in Batman and Laura Croft. I think your son is hard to please which is a good thing. He's been spoiled by great video games apparently and he's a smart consumer for being 9 and able to spot utter shortcomings in this vanilla game

  • is this a parenting forum or are we still talking about SOT?

  • @tundra-793 I've seen some wacky D&D characters and DM's who allow the shenanigans. That sounds like an interesting bard character that one of my friends would roll with; although he'd change the lions to Velociraptor's because dinosaurs :P

  • @dickeyhugey what ?

  • I appreciate everyone's concerns over my lousy parenting, thanks guys lol. The only people he plays with online are the ones we know from the neighborhood.

Imagination is a great thing, all games require some sort of imagination or they would not be fun.

Problem is that while games have rules and mechanics, when they are overly restrictive either by design, bad rule making, or not having the proper mechanics it stifles imagination and limits fun.

  • I cant remember a single game which offers any of your nephews wishes.

I cant ride squids in minecraft.

I cant fist fight birds in skyrim.

I cant dance in Breath of the Wild.

While i agree more interactions would be great, imagination always beat games with rules. (And rules are needed for balancing too...)

  • While your child is obviously very imaginative and may one day be creative, is this. Imagination is boundledd and totally free, where as creativity is the act of figuring out how to be imaginative within the box. This isn't an easy thing to learn in fact many of the people I went to Art School with didn't learn how to be creative within a box, even with 4+ years of training.

  • @finanzminister you can ride squids in minecraft. well atleast its clear you dont know what you are talking about now.
