I find enemy death animations not satisfying

  • I don't know if I'm the only one, but it feels like when you deal fatal damage to the enemy, they die after a short delay. It makes it seem like you didn't kill them directly but they died to something like bleeding. It's almost a suprise when you got them and try to hit them again and suprise they are dead. It would be great if we could see if someone is dead right after we hit them. What do you think about death animation?

  • Tbh I don't really mind how slow it is. Because there is no way you are going to reload before it finishes.

  • Even enemies reactions to getting shot aren’t satisfying. Nothing about the gun and melee combat feels rewarding. Just a clunky mess imo. I’m amazed it’s made it to launch without any revisions to the combat. When the reviews come out not a single publication will praise the combat. :(

  • @pituszly

I'll post here something I put into another thread earlier, which outlines Rare's approach to combat, it was on the forums previously but is now on Reddit, written by Mike -

    https://www.reddit.com/r/Seaofthieves/comments/5envzw/our_approach_to_personal_combat/

  • ^ Sounds like they are proud of their sword combat. Jeez... well good for rare I suppose.

  • @katttruewalker the post You linked doesn't say anything about the way the killing other pirate is seen. I think if it would be great if the death of enemy would feel like death of sceleton, you know, that satisfying boom. Instead, the player just stands in one place for a moment, then he starts disappearing in that must. What if the most animation would be faster and would look more like an explosion?

  • @pituszly You're right it doesn't talk specifically about the death animation, what they do say is that -
We want Sea of Thieves to support different motivations and playstyles, but when combat does occur, it should feel right for the pirate experience we’re creating,

So from this I'm understanding that the death animation also fits into that old fashioned, pirate era themed style of combat.

@Hudson-RL This is an old post and combat has been tweaked several times as a result of feedback from testers, particularly the sword combat. I link it mainly as an insight into Rare's overarching vision for combat - that it's not the high tech, super accurate, fast paced mechanic we might be accustomed to in other games.

  • Death annimations and Teen Ratings dont go together so well.

What you get when you down a player is:

    • a sound that you cant mistake for anything else.
    • a greenish ghost-spooky-cloud that you cant mistake for anything else (even at night).

You dont get the hard look on a dead body and no blood...and imho...it goes with SoT's overall gameplay, the comic and funny gameplay and graphics.

  • I think this is a good example of how people's expectations for SoT are not aligning with Rare's vision for the game.

SoT is a matinee adventure, not a gory late night slasher. There's no graphic violence or adult themes or content. There's a playfulness and a sense of humour to the game that a lot of people are passing right over to try & mould it into the PvP kill-fest that they have grown to expect in other games, & are not finding here.

This is not a combat game, but rather a game about pirates, that naturally includes some combat, amongst a host of other things. Nothing in SoT is meant to be graphic or offensive. The spirit of the game is pitched very differently...

When players begin to understand that, some of the complaints will stop, I hope. Rare has a vision for this game, that I hope they won't compromise. Community pressure to change SoT into a clone of all the other gun-toting, UI heavy, leader board climbing, kill-fests is here- but hopefully, Rare won't listen. It may cost them some custom- but then the people that want that kind of game will go and find the one that is right for them, & the players that get Rare's vision can enjoy SoT in the spirit that it was created.

  • I dont personally get why it's delayed. True, you can't reload that quickly, but you might jump overboard thinking they were able to return fire when in fact you have actually killed them.

I don't see any justification for it, it just feels like an odd feature.

  • at least there should be some kind of notification, a sound maybe a pain noise or death scream should not be too much

  • I thought the skeletons dying was a slight delay/lag... not that it was meant to be like that...

  • @madscallion there is a sound

  • This game would be so much more funny, if they added ragdoll mechanics during death. Seeing a body go flying up into the air after being domed by a cannonball, would be such a beautiful sight. Ragdoll effects make even the worst of games, entertaining. My personal opinion ofcourse.

  • @coffeeart687098 i agree with you, I don't want to change anything to match the fps game, I just find the way that the death animation is looking delayed strange. I think it's not good for the way the game feels. Just like someone above said, you can sometimes jump out of the ship thinking the enemy isn't dead.

  • @katttruewalker how is delayed death animation linked to old fashioned pirate films?

  • I have no qualms with it. If anything, the tone played when you kill someone should play a bit sooner but I don't see the need in changing an entire animation.

  • I like the death "animation" (the green smoke vanishing in thin air). I like the sound cue that goes with it very much too.

But i agree, the delay is weird and i see no justification for it.
And it's exactly the same thing with skeleton, their death animation is great, but there is this unnecessary 1 second delay.

I'd like to know if that's really intended or just related to the beta general lag.

  • @pituszly Not films necessarily but overall 'theme', you get stabbed, shot with a flintlock, you're not going to explode or even necessarily die immediately, it's a drawn out demise and thus the animation fits with that. In my opinion.

  • Honestly, the delay looks like pure lag, and is therefore immersion breaking. It doesn't look like you shot him and he is slowly dying. It looks like you shot him, and 0.5-1.0 seconds later he starts slowly dying with the green animation thing.

(Mind you this is not pc or internet connection as I'm using fiberoptics and a gtx 1080 which should be more than enough to not noticeably get disturbed every time I kill someone)

Might I add however that the whole dying slow and green ghost animation thing does look and feel really good! I just wish'd it'd come at the right time :D

    Hugs 'n' kisses

  • There is a terrible delay in almost everything in this game. They need to work out these technical issues asap. Haven't you noticed how long the delay is to swinging your sword from when you actually press the button on the controller? It's terrible.

  • @katttruewalker I agree, but also, i think for most of us the biggest pirates theme inspiration are the Pirates of The Carribean films. Even though deaths in there are sometimes pictured like that, most of them aren't. Imagine yourself a ship battle in one of those films. Pirates from both sides are boarding ships, and of course killing each other. Would every pirate killed die in this slow theatrical manner? I dont think so. Only the highlighted deaths would be like that. If we take that to the game, when you are in a rush of battle and you board enemy ship, you don't expect every enemy pirate to die that way. Of course there aren't 50 or more pirates like in the film, but still dying this theatrical way is imo just strange when you get killed in a rush of battle.
Also i have to admit, you were right about talking about exploding enemy players. This wouldn't look good. Anyhow i still think the death animation should look quicker.

  • I love how slow it is.

I noticed alot of galleons talk a ridiculous amount of trash to sloops when they attack them. nothing is more satisfying than going aboard their ship and them being able to hear the rest of their crew get murdered by one guy after all the c**p they talked before ^.^ please dont change this.

  • I was playing the beta solo, on a potato. The first player I encountered appeared as a glowing green skeleton. Honestly it was pretty frightening.
This occurred shortly after starting so im assuming the character model hadn't loaded in yet.
It's very neat to know that underneath all of our players are glowing bones, just so we can look cool when we die.
