I would appreciate if someone more knowledgeable than myself could explain commandeering ships. It was my understanding that when you take a ship, the owner can spawn on that ship. And if they quit, the ship would be scuttled. However, yesterday my friend and I commandeered a ship and were able to sail it for over an hour without anyone spawning on it or it being scuttled. Is there some system in play where if you exceed a certain distance the ship will be unlocked? This seems unlikely to me. Or if the original owner logs off, will their ship remain? We had such a riot sailing together in two separate ships that I'd like to know if there's any way to repeat the feat.
Commandeering Ships :: Please Explain!
@sojunamja most likely it means they had an AFK crewmate somewhere on a random island or outpost. or they had jumped off their boat purposely and let it sail on so they could possibly jump someone at a turn in location.
@sojunamja Hi there well it is a bit tricky, but i ll try to explain ships scuttle under 2 reasons, either the WHOLE party left and there is no one to sail it, or you do it mannually on menu. Now what happened yesterday was simple the owner of the ship went afk without logging out and thats how you get to have his ship without him spawning on it, most likely on the ship of the damned after you killed him where he doesnt have disconnection for being afk. It was luck :)
Hope this answer helped you.
@sojunamja - I'd say the owner/s of the ship were still active in game somewhere. They could have teamed up with another crew leaving their ship behind for you to find or just socialising somewhere.
I've left my ship behind many times crewing up with other ships. Sometime I'll set myself a goal to reach a certain island by hitchhiking with other crews. This challenge has given some great memories!

This sounds like a fun experience, I'll be taking note of this.
Gosh, commandeering ships would be a great addition to the game. A simple time ticking down mechanic, when no one else is on the ship would suffice. (I'd say also add in an alternate faster active mechanic - leave a special item or hit switches at 5 points on the ship or something. Make it easy to do against AFK people, but hard against an active crew - but, if you consistently keep killing them, they will lose the ship within a minute or so anyway.)
It comes with risks - it's way harder to do than sinking the enemy. You have to split your crew when you get the ship. But.. that's what PIRACY actually is, isn't it XD haha
I've done this many times borrowing others ships when they don't mind and had mine borrowed too. It's the best experiences I've had with those that are not aggressive pvpers that kill over and over 4v1. If I'm beat and I like the sound/behaviour of the crew I'll try to join them. The aggressive crews loose out on having a 5th crew member but those that play fairly, I'll hang around to have an adventure with.
You've got to be aware though you'll have a white tag like the enemy so prepare to be accidentally killed if you mix in with the sword fights.We so need the recruit on the spot option.
Thank you all for your responses. Figured there was no way to secretly commandeer, but wanted to make sure. I agree the option to recruit would be great. About two hours after this happened, I sneaked onto a galleon without them seeing me and hid in the lower hold for 10 minutes listening to them. Then I started playing "Weigh, Hey, and Up She Rises" loudly on the proximity chat. They nearly had a heart attack ... once they realized what was happening, they found me and I joined their crew. Was awesome.

The AFK answer does not work here, Rare had already implemented their AFK booting system. I tested it a few times on accident when I had to go AFK for my daughter.

Ye be talkin' about me but I assure ye I completed me 30 straight hour voyage on th' Ferry of the Damned durin' th' Original Beta not th' Stress Test. So who ever was goofin' off away from their ship was not me.

@sojunamja So when I joined a crew of 4 on the Stress test, we had another 2 guys jump on our boat, we sailed together and we fought together, then we jumped on their boat.our boat would reset at a nearby port but would stay there anyone could of taken it galleon, maybe this is what happened to you. you took the ship the other guys were on a different ship with others.

Yeah commandering ship have been suggested many times by players including me. You have a unique system to do so. You should add it to one of the existing post. The most popular idea so far is in order to comminder a vassel, one would have to climb the crows nest and replace the ship flag with there own. Taking time to both lower and raise a flag. This would then count there ship as sunk and giving you spawn rights to there ship. Althou it is unlikely that Rare wants this at Lauch as the option to scuttle the ship is to prevent ship from being stolen. I 'm sure they will add it in later i enough player ask for it.

Perhaps the owner was either exploring an island? Or you could have found the owner of one of the guys in the forum who did a test and stayed on the Ferry of the Damned for the majority of his game play.
Hoping to achieve what exactly? "Hey look at me, im gonna be on a boat for the majority of my play." So what? Why would we care. All the rest of us are on boats too.
So moronic.Its S**** was referring to me and my 30 straight hour voyage on The Ferry of the Damned. I wanted to do a self imposed challenge that would be noteworthy to the community and to Rare.
I wanted two things:
- I wanted to make my mark on the game.
- I wanted to earn a story and self awarded title no one else could claim, setting me apart from the everyone else. Thus becoming one of those stories that people tell each other on the forums and in the game.
And to my credit, it worked. I may not be the most well known story in the community but it is getting around more and more. So I wrote a short story as an in-game lore about this voyage. Anyways if you want the the details click my title under my name and check out the thread.
@Its-s****
Aye the Beta voyage was much more fun that the TA voyage. Since I was streaming I had company, I sang lots of Pirate songs, ate Capt'n Crunch. Lots of fun :D
