Subject: Feature Request: Expanding Crew Limits (6-8 Players) for Custom Servers / Safer Seas

  • Dear Sea of Thieves Development Team,
I am writing to share some feedback regarding player limits, specifically from the perspective of a dedicated player trying to bring a larger group of friends into the Sea of Thieves community.
First, I want to say that we absolutely love the world you’ve created. The sailing mechanics, the atmosphere, and the cooperative gameplay are truly unmatched. However, our gaming group usually consists of 6 to 8 people, which currently presents a significant barrier for us.
At £40 per copy, asking our entire group to purchase the game is a steep financial investment when the maximum crew size caps out at four on a Galleon. Because we can't reliably load into the same server together to form an alliance, we are forced to either split the group up into entirely separate sessions or simply choose a different game that accommodates all of us.
We completely understand that the 4-player cap is essential for balance in the High Seas and general PvP. However, with the introduction of Safer Seas and Custom Servers, we would love to see an option to host 6-8 players in a single private session. Whether that means allowing two ships to spawn together in a private server, or even experimenting with a larger ship type in the future, it would vastly improve the cooperative experience for larger friend groups.
Many of us are eager to sail the Sea of Thieves together, and giving larger groups a dedicated space to play—even without the full gold/rep rewards of the High Seas—would make the £40 entry fee much easier to justify for our wider circle of friends.
Thank you for your time, your hard work, and for continuing to support this fantastic game. We look forward to seeing how the Sea of Thieves evolves!
    Best regards,
    Rydurn

  • Custom servers you can have more than 4 players on a ship, You can have an 8 man galleon.
Also I believe its six ships/24 players on Customs.
You can test this out on Insiders.

  • A few things if I recall from when streamers had access to private servers they already had the ability to have more than 4 per ship. Also as customer servers from the sounds of it will allow you complete control over the server IE spawning in shrouded ghosts on demand. Spawning 1,000 chests of fortune in front of you. They won't be allowing progression on customer servers. Safer seas already has no progression outside of currency which as we have all been debating lately over just how useless and pointless currency even is in this game, safer seas was meant to do two things, scratch the PvE itch for those who just can't do PvP and its a deal breaker for them. Also to kinda give a training ground for new players to learn the ropes. It more ended up being the latter as without captaincy to progress milestones, the most you can do is level a trade company to the safer seas limit which was half of level maximum... Then they increased the level cap so now it makes 0 sense.

But yea also custom seas will be costing a monthly fee. So you can now have you friends buy the game, the host at least I guess? Unless everyone? Would need to be paying that monthly fee for custom server access. And icing on the cake. 0 progression of any kind as we have said even with safer fleets, you can't do captaincy, reputation is limited. So other than commendation grinding which is as much for rep as it is for unlocking cosmetics safer seas/fleets would still remain useless.

They are so dead set on this being PvPvE that their attempts to try and add more features for the sake of increase revenue they can't grasp that no one will be willing to pay for custom servers. Ok. No one is an extreme exaggeration. It is very much for streamers and most of the dedicated SoT streamers barely even play anymore. Most of us average Joes if anything might pay for 1 month to check it out then realize how useless it is. Especially the PvE minded of us. I 100% would have bought in to be able to easily host my own little solo full progression server. Glad to pay a monthly fee for that. Instead their focus is on trying to "re-balance" an economy which the wiser of us just sees as smoke to mask that with the scrapping of all S19's PvE content making anyone who came to SoT 2 years after launch will have plenty of old doubloon cosmetics to grind for. But everyone has too many doubloons so the fix for that is obvious. So we are in the situation we are in now. Baffles me as to why they keep adding gold shop stuff for such low prices though. Like surely a gold reset has to be coming too. Who only handles a fraction of the games fundamental problem at once? To upset the players in waves instead of just one big overhaul.

  • why do players feel they need to create these AI topics?
    "Dear Rare" :p

What about the other groups? 10,15,20?

    At £40 per copy,

Fear not...Its free on game pass which a lot of players use.

    Custom Servers will allow this.

  • @burnbacon agree, Id love to play with a larger group of friends, but ik that the servers would implode and that it'd screw with the dynamic of the game. having a 6 person ship contesting world events isn't really fair to the other people on the server, as they would be 25-33% of the entire server pop.

I have nearly 1900 hours and I've still never bought the game, still just playing it through game pass

Partnered servers could never have more than 4 players on a galleon.
It had slots for invites, that's it.

  • @rydurn

As many here have already said, you can do anything you wish on your own custom server. You'll be able to fly around, spawn any item, mob, or world event. It's already free to test out on Insiders (and is a lot of fun!). This way, whatever you choose to have happen on your server, won't affect the main game at all, so there's no need to worry about servers being imbalanced, etc.

P.S. Summoning skeleton galleons and then putting ashen lords on them is hilarious.

  • You can already do this on custom servers when they release.
