New Commendations for New High-Value Loot Items

  • Chests of Fortune and Reaper's Chests/Bounties both feed Commendations that go up to a whopping 10 grades each (having been upped one grade with each past season now), with 30 chests per grade, amounting to a maximum of 300 of either to complete its respective commendation to unlock all of the cosmetics gated behind it, at present. That's been going on for almost... two or three years now(?) since Season 9 IIRC. In my humble opinion as a veteran player, I say its time for a refresh of some kind.

Thus, I would like to propose a radical suggestion: instead of adding new grades and cosmetics to the Fates of Fortune and Reapers' Riches Commendations and inflating those ridiculously high counts any further, let's have a couple of brand new commendations to strive for to start completely from scratch, one of which centered around a whole new high-value loot item for a different company besides Gold Hoarders (since the Chest of Fortune can only be sold to them other than Reapers).

I have one such idea for an entirely different loot item: Ancient Book of Secrets

I'm envisioning a MASSIVE tome made from like ancient materials like some kind of stone (think the Book of the Dead from the 1997 film adaptation of The Mummy with Brendan Frasier). It would be a two-handed item that you can't run with while carrying, sellable to Order of Souls or Reapers. And featured in either a randomly selected World Event (similar to how the Chest of Fortune went between different world events between Seasons 10-14) or in something completely different like the Reaper Fort Event or one of the Fleet Events (possibly a potentially reworked Skeleton Fleet event, which I daresay could use an update).

And since this would be a new loot item for a whole new Commendation to have grades added over the following seasons, it would also feature a whole new suite or two of new cosmetics. Alongside this Commendation, we could have another Commendation for selling some other extant high-value loot item similar to Reapers' Riches that also goes toward these cosmetic sets... maybe one for Athena Chests? (give players incentive to try stealing those again, maybe. Just a thought.) Or perhaps something more dangerous like Stronghold Kegs or Athena Kegs?

    Thoughts?

My college books were that big. lol Try the Codex Gigas. Some guy died trying to catch that thing when it was thrown from a tower, and he was a soldier in armor.

  • I feel that we don't need commendations per se. We need huge ubfkux to gold shop and at least few overpriced sets like DA.

Game shifted more into commendations because it was easiest way to circumnavigate lack of stuff in gold shop and thus from side things to do for dubloons it's now main way to acquire dripfeeded cosmetics.

  • @ghutar You are probably right, but at the same time, the player base does need things to strive for, incentive to do certain things beyond just boosting their own bloated wallets or inflated Emissary ledger standings.

  • thing is if you played since the addition of chest of forturne and reaper chest upadte. the 30 a season isnt terrible. its not fun but achieveable. if your new to the game though thats a lot of grind consider the chest is from one event. im so happy this season they put chests of fortune on the quest board maps. no one uses that board. i made an assumption early on over that community weekend that the chests of fortunes never spawned on large islands. because i did 2 large maps and never found one. so i kept claiming all the large islands to get small ones. doing the small islands then picking up the map bundle and tossing it over board to clean out there wheel from big islands. i later gave up on the large island tossing and was just doing ashen bottles and diging up loose soil if i ever saw it. then started finding cof! kicked myself for tossing all those old big island maps. could have stacked a hefty amount at that point. i was getting 3 cof per island sometimes because i had so many maps saved up. i much more enjoyed that method of getting chests than doing the fort. i got about 25 cof before logging off i think? but its rare for us to be able to get them so easily. last seasons for event being a massive catch up device combined with this seasons map bundle thing. nice.

but i had done the reaper chest commendation under the old reaper rep. like many things in this game i was glad to be done with it. one more think checked off the map. i 100% honestly never picked up a reaper bounty again if i saw it. who cares about gold anyway? doubloons though i still wanted those. so i would take the normal ones and stack them till i was ready to log off and make 1 trip to reapers. then they add this new set of commendations to grind reaper chests again. so it went from loot i didnt really care about to now i need to sell every single 1 again. i hate ticking off part of the game as complete to then have rare say "it was so fun the first time, do it again!" my reaper chests were ahead thanks to fotd. i planned to catch that up this past year when cof returned to fotd. but rare had other plans. though the new plan was nice it gave me 3 cof per fort. nice. not really feeling the drive to do the reaper chest thing though. especially with us out in the roar its sooooo far.

with how insane these commendations have gotten at this point they need to increase the availablility of the loot. im not saying the map board stuff should be permanent. but maybe 2 or 3 world events a season have it instead of 1? have the events always give both so you dont have to do 2 different pieces of content to make progression?

i wonder what the completion % is on cof commendations. they keep adding tiers but i think its because they already made the entire cosmetic set so they could split it up into parts and figure out how many seasons they can milk out of that 1 cosmetic set. so i dont know if its even something they have looked at. what % of players are even up at max? would it be worth them doing another system like this for new items and a new cosmetic set? or did they see a steady drop off over time of people caring about this item being the goto thing? if theres 45 million players (life time, aka pirates created, not active players, this is how rare presents the data) 0.21% of 45million is 94,500 players have completed the achievement to sell 30...... three zero. chests of fortune. as we cant publicly see milestones we dont know how many of those 94,50 are upto 300 but i would assume not even half that number is upto 300. i know im not. and with a potential 1-2 million players active per seasons all this time. only 94,500 have sold 30? thats pretty low for that chest being the new hotness for 3 years now. kinda crazy and thats just doing off assumed 1-2 million current players right now. which is a guess. it could be far less. but what ever the count is now it was higher 3 years ago and been steadily decreasing as all games do over time

I thought the CoFs showing up from the Quest Board maps was only a thing during the Community Weekend... it's not still a thing, is it?

That's why I say that we ought to have a new commendation to strive for with something entirely new, or at least something that perhaps nobody thinks to go after as much as Chests of Fortune or Reaper Chests.

I had another thought in mind: a Mega Stash event like what they did with Ashen Athenas but instead of 15 Ashen Athena Chests, have a random emergent Skeleton Fort vault cough up 15 Chests of Fortune.
