Craft Your Home

  • Yup..
After playing the Demo, and seeing the future of the up in coming game, "Windrose". It only fair to predict if the game is a huge success as it claims to be, Rare will surely look at its building/customiation mechanic and try to copy it. After all they do tend to copy similar stuff from other games such: Season Pass, Fishing, Hourglass/PvP/LMS (shrinking circle).

But the first thing to think about is Where.
The most possible place is Sea of the Damned, why? Because the lore states its a place of memories and is customizable by ones memories. So if you complete certain challenges, like the same way you unlock trinkets for your ship. You can possivbly do the same. Maybe you beat the Skeleton Camps and unlock 'Stone Walls" or defeat the Gold Hoarder # times (again) and unlock his throne :P

Sea of the Damned lonely island, mostly they should choose one of the small/medium islands to use and from there give pirates templates of buildings/blueprints to place around the islands. Those templates/blueprints would be earned or unlocked by your everday challenges/achievements/stories/voyage completions.

Only way to reach your "Pirate Home" would be from the PL hideout, Tavern or simply main menu and load in. Invite players and set sail from there.
It should only be a simple showcase, similar to your ship which you can also pick a Ship of your choosing to dock at the island to show off.

But this only comes down to:

    • Windrose's success with its pirate building world.
    • Rare even has the time to add another large addon.

Finally, it really down to the wire. Is building a base/fort/home really good for the game in the end? More stuff to unlock to build something you can call home. Or will it be another forgotten tool never to be used once you sweats blast through everything within few weeks xD.
After all, most of you are like me, Solo Slooper....who are you gonna show your base off too? ^_^

  • Wait, so Rare has a new game coming or we can craft houses now?

  • Yeah, Windrose is honestly an incredible game, and I could see Rare adopting a building feature. Some sort of instanced pirate hideout would be cool!

  • I highly doubt that they will add a housing system to the game, as we already have a place to decorate and hang our trophies: captained ships. I don’t think we will get any other option to build our own pirate home.

And I for one really wouldn’t want that kind of system in the Sea of Thieves. I‘m not a big enjoyer of crafting games.

  • This would be peak content for Xbox games showcase

  • I have a customizable base.

    it's called a ship

Rather see the effort directed somewhere else.

  • That could maybe be implemented in the future as a possible expansion to captaincy / guilds. First, we get trinkets for our ships, then (maybe) option to build an decorate a personal / guild hideout

  • Gotta say... after seeing that latest building trailer and playing the demo before... I love SoT from the bottom of my heart, but SoT won't be seeing me in a considerable future after Windrose drops on the 14th 😅

That game both looks and feels insane, and the EA is only starting. It oozes creativity.

At the same time, I doubt it's gonna affect SoT meaningfully. It's an entirely different type of game, different gameplay, different vibe.

I'm a super big fan of well-made survival crafting games (+piracy) in general so that's why I'll be migrating, but I believe many people won't.

SoT imo still doesn't need any sort of building/bases/hideouts, and should stick to its own identity. Leave crafting for crafting games.

TL:DR - nothing to worry about.

  • @r3vanns I watched the trailer. That game is literally a copy and paste of skull and bones and Sea Of Thieves, why bother even entertaining that slop honestly? They could’ve just heavily updated Sea Of Thieves instead.

  • I've always supported pirate hideouts. I think them taking place within the sea of the damned makes the most sense. as we have seen with the Monkey Island Tall Tales, the Memories of a pirate can overwrite the damned aesthetic completely, so any setting is possible.

Personally I think the Tunnels of the damned near the outposts being a entry point would be a must.

perhaps you could even slowly progress basic QoL infrastructure similar to that of an outpost to start your session? no trading company shops or anything but like outpost stores and a shipwright.

Again, love the idea of certain commendations unlocking leading to more cool stuff in the hideout.

For heavens sakes, waking up in your own bed in the hideout to start your session rather than a sticky tavern table is always a something I've always wanted.

It doesn't have really the same gameplay as either. It has survival and crafting elements, and only PvE co-op (I believe 4 P2P and up to 10 on a dedicated server). It's probably closer to Salt and Salt 2, but more ambitious (those lack naval combat) and with more realistic graphics.

Honestly, I'm interested in Windrose, but it's a very different game, other than the piracy theme. I think Sea of Thieves focusing on what makes it unique is a better approach.
