So... How are we feeling after that direct?

  • I've got a lot of thoughts going through my mind, honestly.

On surface level, I will give credit where due; Custom Seas being free is overall a major W. They could have made it a paid feature, but they didn't (though a paid feature being a headline season feature would undoubtedly and understandably upset everyone).

Hopeful outpost cosmetic changes are a welcome idea as well, and look forward to hearing more.

But... I don't know, this just feels kind of bleak? I get we have another direct in a couple months, but not showing (or hinting) towards anything outside Custom Seas and Weekender doesn't exactly instill me with great hopes for a major future.

Now in fairness, I don't think huge expectations for this direct were super founded either, but I was at least hoping for info on the next 1-3 seasons, or at least and again, a few hints - something to inspire some hope for a somewhat longer-term future.

I don't doubt Custom Seas will create a myriad of content for people of all community niches, but I fear that giving players these keys is a segue into a potential maintenance mode in the near future (I really hope I'm wrong, and trying not to be TOO doom-y).

I suppose time will tell - I'm excited to try out custom seas, and we will see what June brings us.

Let me know what you think/how you're feeling!

  • I don't know man, direct was pretty bleak. if there's really nothing else for season 20, the game might be entering maintenance mode.

But they may announce something on the Xbox game showcase on the 7th of next month. I remember back when they started the 3 act structure they claimed the big updates would happen outside of the seasonal structure... maybe they are gonna drop something big then instead?

they would get a bigger audience on the Xbox game showcase than the direct... so maybe?

    only time will tell.

  • Gold for Content Creators, Tdmers, Screenshots artists.
ABSOLUTE NOTHING for all the rest of the playerbase.
And now we have to wait even more time for the GMU to appear (hoping that they didn't scrapped even that).

  • @spectergames706 I'm sort of tempering expectations on the XGS announcement. The last few have been admittedly either low energy (smugglers) or something we already knew about (Burning Blade).

I don't think there's a completely 0% chance of something brand new that we haven't seen being shown, but I also feel it's a very, VERY low chance. I sincerely doubt we will ever get anything on the level of hype that A Pirate's Life gave, though. But I hope I'm wrong.

We're also getting another direct sometime this summer (not sure if it coincides with XGS or is after). So time will tell, I guess.

  • @blazebeard2313 Yeah, I'm kind of in the same boat with how I feel on that. If nothing else, we can be happy that a good chunk of the people wanting TDM/fights will probably make their own servers, and be playing within them and it'll hopefully make High Seas/Hourglass more lively.

  • @valor-omega Honestly, not hopeful at all, this was the perfect opportunity to give us... something! But no teasers or announcements about anything outside of customs seas were really depressing. We have no plan on how they're going to stop making the same mistakes, just promises of doing better and self-congratulation on not releasing completely broken updates.

I'd say the Xbox Showcase is the last chance they have to excite the playerbase. If that fails, not many people are gonna bother playing season 20.

  • CS will release and within week or month, something that wasnt added or "want" will be demanded.
Or people will see they cant 'actually play and unlock' stuff in CS...and demand that changed :P

  • @blazebeard2313 It's not that it doesn't cater to the majority of the playerbase as custom servers will allow for people to practice with their friends etc. It's much like Minecraft where people have free reign over anything in creative mode (which caters to everyone), but just in SoT

  • The Community Direct that could have been an email

The Community Direct that was as indirect of a direct as a bullet curved by Angelina Jolie

The Community direct that…. Missed the Mark

after pointing at it so much as the moment more info would become available

Not to mention the gaslighting by Chapman saying that the gold economy was never on their restructuring plans was honestly maddening:

We know that the currency you earn from your adventures at sea should be a fundamental part of the core loop of Sea of Thieves. However, with both Doubloons and gold, they've lost their value over time. We feel it's time to bring them back as a core part of the Sea of Thieves experience, and we're starting here with Doubloons.

    Cut the bs mates….

  • @kianonboard players practised in the real game for 8 years. And before there wasn't even safer seas. This stuff is just another bootlick for content creators and something that could be implemented with minimal effort. Personally, I'll play sot only on those damn weekender for the doubloons and 5 days on Custom Seas launch to grind the pass, and that's it. I hope we get something relevant for the lore, like the GMU in S21, otherwise I'll just drop the game. They are transforming a unique game in a mainstream game (same creative mode as minecraft, same pass structure as fortnite). Zero Originality.

  • I’m not disappointed in the sense that I wasn’t expecting any major announcements about the game’s future.
However, one question that arises is how they’ll fund it.
Now that we know CS will be free, the Emporium will have less content, and the Plunder Pass is changing, how are they going to fund it?
In my opinion, either they’re preparing a big announcement for the Xbox Showcase in June—a collaboration that’s sure to attract a lot of players (which is the most likely scenario)— and the most natural collaboration will be a continuation of the one we started with Disney on A Pirate Life - or the prices of cosmetics will go up.

As for the rest, I’m waiting until June; I won’t judge Season 20 until then.

  • @valor-omega

They should have made custom seas paid. It's nice to have it be free for everyone, but it seems like monetization has been an issue for the game for a long time now.

It wouldn't have been unreasonable at all to ask for a subscription for what will probably be a lot of server maintenance on their end, plus a lot of players would've been willing to pay for it. Seems like a missed revenue stream that wouldn't have gotten a lot of pushback.

Would rather they get money from an actual valuable feature that isn't core to the game, vs continuing to put a majority of new cosmetics in the plunder pass.
