What's at the end of sea of thieves?

  • Sea of thieves has a 10 year plan and we are half way there. With the PS5 release on the horizon, and some players who already own the game on PC and xbox now buying the game again just for exclusive cosmetics, what will happen to all our progress when they finally close the servers in 5 years? What happens to all the digital content that we have purchased? This has been speculated on before but I have yet to see Rares/Microsofts official stand on this. When they shut down the servers is that it? Everything just gets deleted? All that game time and all that real life money that we have put in. Where dose it go? Where dose it go Rare?

  • @qu1etone most games have a set plan as they never know how well a game will do on release but plan for the best version of the future.

I wouldn't be surprised if the 10 year plan has been updated by now and is planned beyond that initial date by a fair few years already

  • i am a tedious lover of a no-more-supported game as my image can tell. as a cod player i've seen a lot of end of life of games, fortunatelly the servers are not closed, the year/years of life of a game is related to the service that the developers can do as support and adding things.

for example, i play a lot of older CODs like WaW, BO1/2/3, and all those games are done, out of the support. WaW is from 2008, just for remind you, and i can still play and find some servers, my profile is still there, so the game is still playable with all the things that i have...the others are the same.

so i think that you can not worry about loosing everything:
the only possible things that can happen for you to loosing all what you got is or the failure/closing of the Rare itself, or a voluntary closure of the servers from the developer itself (like the original warzone for example), in a normal cicle of life of a game you can keep playing it, even after the end of life of that game, that is only for the support (excluded the minimal one, that let the game runs)

  • @tenlo Well lets hope so. But for this game to last the course though it needs a server update and the abandonment of xbox one. Without any official announcement 10 years is still the 'dead'line.

  • IIRC they said they had plans for 10 years - I always thought that means that they'll be updating and adding to the game for at least 10 years. I don't think that it means they'll close the seas a month (or season) after the last content update.

  • @lem0n-curry yeah I don't think they will shut it down on the day of the 10th anniversary but servers will not stay open indefinitely because someone has to pay for it and maintain it. It's the live service conundrum

Perhaps payed for Custom servers will generate some income, new(er) players buying cosmetics from the Emporium will as well, perhaps the cosmetic team will still be active. Not sure that will generate enough though.

  • Vote for a Sea of Thieves 2, I think?

  • If Sea of Thieves 2 happens I hope it is just a reboot of Sea of Thieves 1. I would not want to loose my progression and cosmetics. Just give us a bigger map, more ships and more to do.

  • It takes all kinds to make this game and it takes all kinds to play it. Here it is to many more years of SOT! 🍻

  • People already got a preview of how this ends.

Overview stats were a few years old, those was really the only confirmed stats people had beyond just random commendation numbers. That was long time player's story, Captaincy is just something that showed up 4 years into the story.

When they decided that it was done they just got rid of it.

We have no idea when this ends but that is going to be similar to how it ends.

That's why people just gotta make the best out of it while the game is still around, being overly confident about how long it will last is always a poor investment and often just leads to people taking it for granted.

  • Flameheart... The princess is in another castle!

But in all seriousness... I hope it lasts as long as games like WoW, it has potential to!

It's almost a guarantee that if there is a sequel that everyone would start over. You might get a special veteran cosmetic though.

I don't think they are planning on closing the doors any time soon. With a new platform being added, there is potential for a lot of new sales and as long as the game is making enough money to pay for the servers and the staff to maintain it, it'll probably stick around. Once it's no longer feasible to operate, they'll announce a shut down and the servers will get turned off and that'll be the end. It's happened to many, many games before.

  • It's quite simple , the money goes in the pocket of Mr Philious Spencer , a small amount will go to Rare , the game , the stats and whatever more will be gone , if and only if , those servers get's deleted but... The Joy , the Memories of Epic Battles or made friendships will last in your memory untill dementia or the Allslaughterer will shut you down.
