I think we need to step down from the Fortnite cosmetics

  • Hey how can i say it... there are too many glowing/magical sets of ships and costumes, Ive always loved the curses myths and magics of Sea of Thieves and its because they came with a story and they were not easy to achieve.

I really support the Emporium shop overall and bought many many items from there, and merch before it was released to support the game but im growing tired of seeing some serious curses behind costumes with bareboned lore (also not to be able to equip these curses is a waste of cosmetics).
Before it felt like magic was difficult to find and that added mystery and charm to the game, now it just feels lazy....

I really want to address this, magic and curses are great. But many times writers and devs use magics to make their life easier, "why? cause magic".
The cursed pets feels lazy! Who created them? It feels like how Pokemon started to abuse their pokemons, lord of Time & Space! you want to tell me that ive just caught in a tiny ball the Creator of the universe?? Bruh.....
The only pets that in terms of lore that really deserves praising is the Reaper's Heart pets, all the drawing and the lore behind makes them feel right.
What I hate to see now are games like Fortnite and PUBG that are just handing out like candies over the top advanced outfits or magical with ZERO background!
There are so many elements from the real world and historic tools that can be 100 times more appreciated.

"Now we can get gills and red scales, why?" Rare: "ahem 1000 AC please"

Adding Jack and the crew set, Davy Jones and now Barbossa was a fantastic idea not to only to become yout favorite pirate but also more authentic clothes to the SoT, we need more of that!
Like seriously the Sunken Sorrow Cutlass looks like a sketchy baseball bat from Saints Row.... Glowing stuff is neat but it seems like almost every item gets the Fortnite treatment.
Speaking of Costumes i just want to point out that i was never a fan as they: A. ruins the whole idea of creativity when it comes in one set and cant be mixed. B. devalue appearance experience, it can be your first day on the seas and instead of looking like a poor sad dirty little bilge rat you become Sir Sweatlord.
Costume like the Shrouded Ghost costume should have been given to those who actually hunted that FICTIONAL myth, just imagine the sheer flex of wearing it then a title.

I do love brave cosmetics that wont only please history fanboys like me! (pssst Rare can i get some form of a gas mask? pretty please?) but we do need more historical clothing, noble and dirty ragged clothes.
Ive played with someone recently and commented on his outfit and he said something that is very true, that he likes to dress up like a simple crew member because almost everyone looks like a dashing captain.
Never give up on the silliness of Sea of Thieves, its great! But i would like to see more crispy historic style, so can we please lay off that Fornite eurovision style?

  • @faceyourdemon Agreed. They seriously need to cut-down on all the gubbins they're sticking on the cosmetics.

Everything looks like ridiculous glow-in-the-dark christmas trees now :(

I would pay double for cosmetics if they just toned-down all the "Rob Liefield-y" MUST HAVE MORE STUFF ON IT!!! approach, removed the glowy excrement, and just made them look like actual clothes, but cool pirate clothes.

  • seems like there is something for everyone imo

sure there is lots of power ranger villain stuff but some of the sets capture SOT great. Ledger rewards are always on point imo
lots of the drops fit well imo

venomous kraken is great same with the barnacle stuff

ruby splashtail is one of the coolest designs and fits great

Imo I don't think any preference really gets left out. Everyone gets someone and no one gets everything which is just how shared environments full of all kinds of different preferences go

Nope, I can't stand most of them :(

People (like me) who prefer a minimalist aesthetic are ABSOLUTELY left out.

There's virtually no cosmetic I give a turret about other than those that are all black or have skulls on them. Even at that - more that half the stuff with skulls on it are too bright or ornamented to the mammaries like some 70s NYC cat wrangler.

  • @faceyourdemon In general I agree with you. The glowing accents were nice but should have kept their rarity. Now I can slap enough glowing bits on the ship to make it a floating Lite-Bright. Magic is nice when it is used sparingly, but when storytellers use it to spackle over the seams and holes of their world then it just feels rushed.

I'm cool with people having different opinions and preferences but this comes across as unreasonably picky to me.

Nothing fits your fancy? I get that not everyone is into what comes out of the oven all the time but I'm not sure how someone could be served by the devs at this stage if they don't much care for anything that exists yet.

  • @wolfmanbush I dont have a problem with trying to nail everyone's taste but it dosent really feel like that for a while (not all the time of course, the team that is working on cosmetics are doing a fantastic job).

But you are just scraping my issues with this, its how poorly they are being introduced imo to the world, how magic became so simple and devalued.

Steampunk Egypt Vampires Zeus outfit... Its all over the place!
Just like PUBG Fortnite that slaps everything together, I like Pizza and Burgers but we dont need to mix them to have a good meal.

I think that the cosmetics department became a little bit too messy, would do good for the game to add more calm with awesome details but they dont need to sparkle all the time, god is in the details.

  • For a game that relies on a big driving force being cosmetics, there is a very distinct lack of cosmetics. I say bring it on, from outlandish to serious. More cosmetics is a good thing in my view.

  • Yes, please. The ridiculous cosmetics like the pumpkin costume are too much, i dont think it fits the game at all.

Also fewer costumes and more individual clothing please. Im one of the many people who want to keep some of their favorite cosmetics, so costumes are something i will never be buying, even though I would like get new clothes and keep supporting the game.

Its also boring to see so many players looking completely identical.

  • I used to be of this mind, but seeing the shift in the attitude of the community towards a more lighthearted tone and just having fun has me thinking that maybe it's not a bad thing. They seem to be attracting a more casual crowd to the game who don't take the game too serious, and it's putting off the ne'er-do-wells.

It's not my style personally (never liked to be a glowstick) but if the Fornite-ification is the price to pay for a more welcoming game, then I'm not against it.

This is ultimately what it is

casuals pay the bills and keep the servers active and they largely are less focused on lore and more on gameplay and things that they deem pretty or cute/cool, etc

that doesn't mean I think that those that have been around a long time or are into lore should be ignored because I don't and I'm also confident the devs haven't moved on from the lore and ways of old either when it comes to cosmetics

I dunno much about fortnite but I don't really see this as the fortnite-ification as I think it just appeals to a lot of the crowd the game appeals to. Not just kids but the family as well. Family game and people come in and are content with flashy boats and cosmetics.

I feel that nothing has been taken away, there have just been things added

  • @wolfmanbush

Yep, I do agree with that. We lose nothing. Those that are interested in the lore will continue to seek it out, those that aren't will just play casually and have some fun doing so, whilst keeping the game active.

I used "Fortnite-ification" only as a tongue in cheek reference to the original post. I've seen games do this long before Fortnite became popular - and some of them (PvZ: Garden Warfare comes to mind) were a lot of fun to play.

  • @alienmagi I was really against this outfit, like what the hell happened to that poor sailor??
Went too far and it looks like its gonna get worse with trendy holyday stuff.

    Not even barnacle?

  • Yeah, I’m not a big fan of the outlandish costumes either. Don’t even like glowing cosmetics as well.
I’d love to have more choices to make my pirate look weather worn and raggedy, like more bandanas, bandanas you can wear under hats, more tricorn designs and rings for your hands.

  • I understand the point of view expressed here because we all like that immersion in the pirate life, yet SOT is somehow different. There is a lighthearted side to the all buccaneering theme, starting with the funny characters, the lack of blood or tobacco pipes and so on.

I say bring on the cosmetics, the sillier the better for this kind of pirate fantasy based on Disney characters.

  • I have no problem with the silly glowing cosmetics being available for those who want them.

I am not against choice - I am FOR it!

I am simply asking that people who don't like the glowy stuff with a bajillion gubbins ornamenting them out the whazoo be given viable options as well.

Right now there aren't really any, and pretty much ALL the new stuff just doubles down on the above!

It IS possible to have both you know, we can have silly costumes AND more subdued minimalist ones at the same time!!!

If only the latter was actually provided, and the former wasn't the ONLY option...

  • @illbushido305

    Not even barnacle?

That, Eternal Freedom, & some of the Sea Dog & Hunter sets are about the only cosmetics I can stand to wear.

  • @nabberwar More cosmetics is a good thing in my view.

Exactly! The silly glowy cosmetic crowd has been catered to above and beyond, time to give some choices for those that prefer a more minimalist look too!

  • At this point im just waiting for a glowing space ranger lazer armor costume to appear in the emporium. Something like what is worn by Halo's Master Chief.

I mean if we're not sticking to the pirate theme anymore, then why not, right?

  • I like some of the glowy cosmetics they’ve added, but I would definitely welcome more Piaraty looking cosmetics. All the Pirates of the Caribbean cosmetics look fantastic!

I do like that they’ve been doing Seasonal themed ship sets though. Last season’s coral ship set from the shrines and this season’s Firework and Rat inspired ship set look fantastic!

  • @alienmagi Master Chief costume XD
hahahaha that would be the end of me

  • I'm honestly in the opinion that Rare needs to cut down on cosmetics as a whole as I think there is just WAY too many cosmetics already. I actually would love for a whole season without any cosmetics of any kind, no titles, no hats, no emporium stuff, just content only (Cosmetics aren't content, content is new features, expansions, etc).

Despite that I'm at least thankful for the Pirates of the Caribbean stuff since those are actually plain and simple. Honestly I would have been fine with the glowy cosmetics like Dark Warsmith, Sea of Sands, etc if NONE of them were in the Emporium and were earnable in-game with an in-lore explanation, especially with the new portals as well.

Like imagine travelling through a portal to the Sea of the Damned to battle the Soulflame Captain and get the Soulflame cosmetics as a reward for doing, or travelling via portal to a desert like area to battle a desert like monster (heck the lore reason could be that the Sea of the Damned doesn't just represent memories but dreams as well, and that dreams have become so powerful they might as well be real).

As for how Rare would make money, keep non-lore based items in the emporium like cross-overs and just have the ones that could be related to lore earnable in-game.

  • @foxywiththemoxy said:

I feel like we have a lot of cosmetics too, but I also agree with the folks saying there aren't enough regular clothes.

What we have "way too many" of are goofy re-skins or pieces that only match with others in their set.

But as many re-skins as we have, we don't have just a plain, blue Sailor shirt.

  • I’d definitely like to see more pirate-centric cosmetics added in, the barbossa costume is a great example of how a pirate should look. Maybe even take some inspo from AC Black flag

  • I found the egyptian crocodile themed clothes and set to be very strange indeed. What saddened me though was the "steampunk" one, as i am a big fan of steampunk and that just didnt work for me - it was more based around smithing and more suited a "Dwarven" kind of theme. I wanted some victoriana outfit and some smokestacks - that spew smoke and look like they had something to do with actual steam.

  • Everything is pretty much atleast original..

"Fortnite cosmetics" was getting a literal Jack Sparrow crossover/skin... they shoehorned it into the lore too, but you all love that.

I'm perfectly fine with Rare getting wild with the cosmetics and costumes. Some effects should just be curses but whatever. Glow is fine. It's all been fun.

Definitely also paints a picture of how "in the spirit of fun" Everything is supposed to be.. rather than the sweats you tend to see, and the desperation for more "tuccz" clothing or generic real pirate clothing number 2

I like the glow stuff, I don't wear it all the time, but when I want a change of pace and a fun look, I've got plenty of fun things to choose from

  • Not until I can kill Sasuke as Ariana Grande...

  • @tre-oni I love glowing stuff as well, a lot of them are welcomed to the game but it started to detail to what i call "Fortnite skins". Sea of Thieves dont need to follow a trend they are so talented to create the trend.

A lot of the costumes are really losing it and the ship sets becoming all about the bling bling, dont get me wrong, there are alot of things that are not classified as pirate themed but to a certain point and not all the time.
I feel like this subject is pretty divided, on one end there are people that loves it and want to see more, and those like me who are fed up with it completely and worried.

I don't get being completely worried tbh.

Last set in emporium was a pretty normal ship, and it looks good. The collector version figurehead had a glow that was it. In game we also got the party boat which is pretty "regular" no glow and just a colour paintjob. Clothing that dropped alongside it was the same, and then there was the new tucc outfit added which is just plain black. It was all pretty neutral stuff. Nothing really "fortnite" about it all.

Theres plenty of regular style stuff, and they keep adding that as well. If someone doesn't want glowies and goofy style there are plenty of options, if someone does want glowies and goofies there are plenty of options.

I don't understand the worry. People fed up with? Sure I get that, some people fed up because they don't get what they'd prefer as often as they'd like.. but who cares in the end really.. I'm fed up with alot choices myself, as are many other people about many other things, but in the end.. it doesn't really matter or change anything overall. In this instance here we actually get both worlds.

I have no problem with the new set, and no one feels forced to use glowie stuff.

"Don't get what they'd prefer as often as they'd like.." if you think that we are worried because of some need to control the narrative you really dont get the sentiment at all.

We are well aware of options and there is zero intention of telling others what to choose, but if you think that the answer is just "not to wear glowing stuff" if we dont want to then we dont have much to talk about, because you are not getting the sentiment.

The problem is that many players feels that Rare being alienated from their style and leaning on glowing stuff to make the wow factor.
It was great before but for a while its being slapped in too many to make something look special, but all it does is the opposite when everything become flashy.

And the worry feels very valid when looking at it for a long time happening, Sea of Thieves is a trend, dont need to chase trends.

  • @faceyourdemon Thank you for your opinion! It has been noted, shelved, and...

....I'm sorry - what were we talking about again? 😅

  • Eh, the more cosmetics the better, I say. Glowy or not. Besides, seems about on brand for SoT to me. This game has never been about subtlety or realism. It's a goofy, bombastic, magical pirate adventure. Glowing skulls, glowing maps, waves of eerie green light, floating skull-clouds, rainbow lantern flames, neon green phantoms...

It's just part and parcel with SoT cartoony style.

Now don't get me wrong; I'll always be excited for more raggedy, patchwork "sea hobo" type clothing since that's my main aesthetic. But I also like to sometimes dress up as a crazy pumpkin man and make my ship look like a floating rave party.

Long story short, I want more glowy and non-glowy outfits. =D

  • @galactic-geek hahahah huh?
    Not sure what it means..

  • @galactic-geek I dont know what your trying to say here
