Do you actually care about hackers in your game?

  • I have been playing since day one, i'm not the best player i'm probably a little above average in motor skills but I know damn near everything about this game. I pay attention to weapon balances you name it so I can tell the difference between a hacker and a better player and hacking is on the rise.

Went my first year and a half not encountering a cheater, then the anniversary update came out and there was a big surge of people cheating and lately it has been worse. For awhile I'd only run into one crew a month using Aimbot programs or other sketchy things but now I'm encountering hackers several times a week!

I have been very active in reporting suspicious players every time it has happened. I'm on pc and don't record footage and I honestly don't need to and shouldn't have to. Most hackers are so dumb they upload clips of themselves hacking and I submit those with the reports but for some reason they never get punished.

I'm convinced that Rare doesn't actually punish hackers or review posts and it seems like the internet agrees with me.

I've been looking into the hacking community and all form posts made by their victims and it's clear that nothing is being done about it.

To prove my point I met a hacker I friended him, reported him with video of him using hacks and he still plays every day. I now make it a habit to follow people I am convinced are cheating and see if anything comes of it but nothing ever does.

Why does Rare not have a cheat detection system? I am fully aware that software has huge costs and upkeep but I would rather have a fair playing community than more random stuff. Hell I'd pay a fee to play on servers with no cheaters.

I'm very worked up as anyone reading this can tell but it is because I love this game. Sea of Thieves is my go to game and I love the combat, the challenge, win or lose but losing to someone who is hacking sucks in a way words can not describe.

I have seen your update videos and all your news clips and Rare seems proud of this game and they should be, but they should be a little ashamed with how many hackers there are. It's worse for some games but so much better than others.

Rare if you do actually care about the problem why not show it in some way other than copying and pasting a link that no one looks at.

I expect I am going to get a lot of hate for this post am I am more than willing to take time and talk with anyone who has been willing to read this.

  • Well said! However, I'm going to guess that the rest of the comments in this thread will mostly be along the lines of, "omg, THIS again??!!! There are hardly any hackers in this game!!"

But you and I know better. I play on the Xbox 1, and every time I bring this subject up, I get told the above (basically). I also get told that you can't hack/mod the game on an Xbox, which I know to be false. I also know that the purveyors of mods and hacks sell mods that can make a PC look like an Xbox so that PC hackers can play on Xbox only servers. It will take anyone who tries about 15 seconds of searching to find this out.

It saddens me greatly the number of cheaters I encounter - and that number is growing daily. I've reached the point of wondering if it's worth playing anymore, but I too really enjoy the game.

I wish Rare/whomever would actually do something about it. I've reported countless players that I know to be modding/hacking. Sadly, they all continue to play.

Maybe your message will work...here's hoping!

  • Hacking just isn’t a major issue in this game. I’ve been playing since May 2018 and I’ve only ran into 2 hackers. One was hacking, and the other was esping. Hacking isn’t the major issue people make it out to be

  • @d-cottingham hacking is not a major issue in this game. What instances of “cheating” have you witnessed?

  • I have had people hacking as well.

    https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/118074/cheating-seeming-more-common-now/5

Getting told I suck when I know full well they was cheating .

  • I just posted about this https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/118082/cheaters

  • @sherpa725 - I'll tell you about 2 instances. One happened tonight. I watched one person (whom I suspect was a PC player using a mod to appear as an Xbox user) take a minimum of 15 consecutive sword hits, without eating, and survive. I watched this same player be surrounded by the four members of my crew, receive sword hits from all directions, and then jump merrily away. I saw this same person (after they were knocked off our ship) grab our ladder, release it, re-grab it, release it, re-grab it, release it (about 7-10 times) while our ship was moving. One person (and only the one, no other members of their crew left their ship) killed our entire crew twice - by themselves. I don't claim to be the world's greatest SoT player, but I (as well as my crew) can hold our own in most situations.

The second instance happened about a month ago. I still have it captured. An opposing player was in the water throwing firebombs at us. I went overboard and hit him twice with an Eye Of Reach. He started swimming away, I shot him a third time. Two sharks were in pursuit. I hit him a fourth time and watched him get bitten by a shark on two separate occasions. (He never ate food once.) I was still in hot pursuit when he stopped swimming and turned to face me. He then did a power lunge with his sword - still underwater - and killed me with one stroke (moving forward, just as if he were on land).

There is not a week goes by when I don't see someone that I suspect is using a hack or mod - and that's on "Xbox with controller only" servers. And don't say, "oh you're just a sore loser". Wrong. I don't mind getting beat fair and square. I don't expect to win every battle. I just expect everyone in the battle to be playing by the same rules. And I can guarantee you that right now they aren't.

  • @mightyanchor I'd be curious to see the footage you speak of. feel free to dm me as posting it here would make it a witch hunt.

  • @d-cottingham none of these are examples of cheating unless your leaving information out. Hitreg in this game is bad and swimming hitreg used to be god awful until they started improving it. I get called a hacker all the time in this game and it gets old

True, I would like to see video of the hacking that is happening so commonly. Post it on youtube or something.

  • @sherpa725 - ah yes, the famous "hitreg is really bad in this game, therefore that must be the problem instead of hacking/modding" dodge.

So poor hitreg explains how a player survives two consecutive shark attacks (without eating)? I don't know about you, but I would be hard pressed to remember a time when I survived two consecutive shark attacks, full health or not. Not only that, but survives these two attacks after being hit 4 times by an eye of reach? Oh, that's right. Hitreg is so bad that none of those four "hits" were actually hits.

Poor hitreg explains how a player can survive a minimum of 15 total sword hits from different members of my crew? Of course, to believe that you would have to also believe that said poor hitreg only applies to the crew I was on, since the opposing player was able (single-handedly) to kill all four of my crew twice. And poor hitreg explains how this same player could be surrounded by my sword-swinging crew and manage to leap away, seemingly without damage?

I get so tired of people making excuses as to why hacking/modding/cheating really isn't hacking/modding/cheating. Perhaps the simplest explanation is the true explanation - that players really ARE cheating, and sadly (as noted in the op), Rare doesn't seem to care or do anything about it.

Hit reg doesn't, but bugs like this one do: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ooEJQir7Tko

Players cannot influence how much damage they do or how much damage they take, that's why there are problems with hit reg. If players were able to tell the server that they did or did not take damage, there would be no hit reg problems and many more cheats.

I actually had this same exact thing happen to me. I didn't think it was hacking, seemed like a buggy problem with the game.

  • Been playing since day one.
    Over 25 million meters sailed.
    Never once encountered a hacker.
Lots of bugs yes, hackers no.

Posts like this are just normally spewed out straight after someone has been sunk.

  • Why is it that there is never any video evidence? Personally I have only ever suspected someone of foul play twice but upon reflection I realised it's highly likely they just outplayed me which I think a lot of people have a hard time admitting. I've even been accused of cheating myself and I'm not even that good!

@D-Cottingham The point you make about dropping and grabbing a ladder is really not hard to do and certainly is in no way, shape or form hacking.... To the people who claim they encounter cheaters on a regular basis, I emplore you to please take a video recording, it is so easy to do and will help your case more than any explanation can ever do.

  • @octopus-lime

Some are just really good. Take my 8 year old on Fortnite. If he kills them they are n00bs, if they kill him they must be hackers..

I've watched some streamers that are so fast PvP you miss stuff like them having a bite of food. Especially in the heat of battle. They could be tanked up on kraken or meg as well.

  • @mightyanchor Sea of Thieves have a greate anti cheat system and other then couple handful amount more then a year ago its easier to spot the shrouded ghost then a hacker.

@D-Cottingham So there are hardly any hackers in this game!!

Of course like a virus hackers getting smarter if you can say that about a neckbeard who lives in his moms basement and seeks for validation in a video game so he hacks to look good.
But im sure that they do try to find new ways but if there are any they are in a tini tiny which dont justify any of it, we dont want them here but Rare are doing an amazing job.
I welcome you to look at bigger companies wayyyy bigger then Rare and see how their game is infested with hackers but here the waters are crystal clear without hackers.
Im not claiming that any encountered with one was a mistake but i dont think that in the last year that youve encountered as much as you claim.......
Sorry, i trust them more to do their work then a stranger on the internet with claims.

Yup, people often miss details and go straight to shenanigans accusations. This thread is a great example of that, with video evidence:

    https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/118176/possible-cheater

  • @bloodybil Thanks, that post is amazing! I have no idea why they locked it but it really goes to show how quick people are to cry 'cheater' when they get outplayed.

  • @d-cottingham

Or, he is an Xbox player. Your jumping hoops when the simple answer is he was Xbox the entire time.

    Occams Razor my dude.

My guess is because the OP straight out called the guy (who posted the vid afterwards) and broke the witchhunt rule. The name could simply have been removed but I don't think anything good would have come out of the thread after that anyways.

It indeed does a great job of showing players misconceptions and how a different point of view from the same fight gives the whole story.

That and/or the OP would most likely have asked mods to bury that thread after the humiliation of calling someone a cheater only to show a video proof they just got outplayed.

  • @d-cottingham I've had multiple occasions where sharks take a bite out of me, but I take no damage; instead, I only get pushed back - and it's more common than you night think. I'd say 1 out of every 6 bites it does this.

  • @mightyanchor this is the thing

whats the difference between dying to a hacker and dying in general?

none people like to blame it on "hacking"

to make it seem that their death was justified

i've played with SOOOO many xbox players before the change that went "ugh i died again probrably a pc hacker" i've had countless people tell me just the same me hack? can barley even use my browser properly

now there are cheaters without a doubt there are

im not sure i've run into one in this game and i've played since god 2-3 years from now? idk dont keep a track on time i joined just a few days before brig came out

but i think this whole "HACKER HACKER HACKER HACKER" is heavily exaggerated i mean how would you know its cheating?

how would you tell cheating apart from really good skill?

nobody knows for sure only rare does

because they have codes and other tools to specificly catch cheaters

we can only judge with our own eyes and that is not a reliable tool

next time you die don't jump the cheater train report if you will but dont just assume everyone is a hacker because they killed you

they have an anti cheat for a reason now this anti cheat may or may not be that good cuz well its microsoft's software we all know we all know

but what im trying to say is "cheating is not thaat big of an issue" 99% of the time you die its because you got played not cheated
