World Expansion Suggestion

  • Hi All,

Just had an idea earlier this week and was trying to think how this could be added to a game such as sea of thieves.

    The idea is... a City?

Can't help it but I think a City would be a great addition to a pirate themed game like Sea of Thieves. I've seen it in many games, series, movies(Monkey Island, PotC, etc.) and a big City just feels great in a Pirate themed world. It will make the game feel more alive, with having a place with actual inhabitants instead of only merchants or castaways... !

Now why would we have a city and what can we do in there?

    Amazing question Mr. Reader!

Right so in a city you can include things such as: Minigames, the new upcoming Arena (In a Colosseum or something, if you do add a Colosseum I expect crocodiles pls!), Merchants , PvP disabled maybe?, Inhabitants.

Also many more things... If you have any fancy ideas that you would like to see in THE CITY please shoot down in the comments.

And no... Skelly Ships and Meggies and Krakies all striking every time you jump off an island does not make the world very "allive" as it's always the same thing over and over again... (honestly... these usually feel more like a chore, sorry)

Anyway these for now hope you like it thanks.

  • Well, I'm not against the idea, but the SoT is supposed to be secluded and mysterious. A city kind of goes counter to that. Also, numerous arguments have been made why safe areas are actually a bad idea. I do like the idea of new activities though.

  • Um, not too bad of an idea and also not trying to be rude at all, but it really sounds like you basically want it to turn into AC IV: Black Flag but with AC: Unity player with player aspect in it. That game right there has ALMOST everything that you said you want in it, just not Colosseums or minigames, just side objectives.

But bcuz you said that I was thinking though instead of an entire city, what about a LARGE community island where people go to get exotic voyages and other stuff, then turn in loot at the same vendors at outposts so no one abuses the safety zone of the community island's pvp disabled field.

Have it large enough to sustain great minigames or even nice place for a Colosseum aswell. I hope both our ideas make it in, that would be awesome. It just has to fit the base of the game's foundation is all.

After all the game is called Sea of Thieves, not City of Thieves.

  • Ahhh amazing I will get back to you after work, EXCITED!!

I don't agree with the first part in your post. Having a non-mysterious place would make the rest of the world feel more mysterious. To me right now, the world doesnt feel secluded and mysterious at all because it's all the same. A place of civilization would make it feel like you'd be safe there (while you arent but wait for it). But when you depart from the city island and go out in the ocean and explore islands, it may feel a little more "wild" because you got used to the city for a while. You think indiana jones is in a world consisting of 100% jungle and temples? No. This is what makes it exciting. The shift of civil/wild. Capt jack sparrow robs a bank in the city (fifth movie) and is a sad drunk and walks around in the city in all movies. When he has a ship and sets sail from the city, it makes his journey on the ocean feel more adventureous.

I 100% agree with you on the safe area's and how they're a bad idea. I do believe though we can find a middleground between the two parties. You could still pvp, BUT there are a few npc (or player) guards. When you attack another player the guards come to arrest you can put you in jail. (maybe a minigame where the dog has the keys and you need to grab them without a guard noticing it. Guards may be asleep or patrolling).

This offers another alliance opportunity. Players can become guards (inlcuding police ships?) for the alliance and they get a notification if someone breaks the law.

  • @xix-zeno-xix What do you think about my idea about the safe zones in my previous post this thread? I'm not a fan of safezones as well but I can understand other people. Guards would be a cool middleground. Giving some people a "safe" zone while still enabling us to kill and plunder everyone we want (with a risk).

  • What do you think about adding the ability to fire broadsides on your ship from the captains wheel?

  • @lebaguette27

I agree to some extent - the game certainly needs some sort of civilisation. But I don’t think a city.
Mainly because there weren’t any cities which is why the pirate era thrived, as “civilisation” hadn’t reached there.

Instead these outposts should have more going on, Nassau in Black Flag and Black Sails, Tortuga in PotC etc
And then perhaps have a more straight and narrow town ie Port Royal but this harbours the navy.

I’ve put a thread together on my idea on bringing civilisation in:

  • @davidbarlow well to answer your question there bud, I think your idea isn't bad at all but I feel like it may just be a bit too complicated for Rare to put that much in the game as well as trying to keep the same feel of the game. Idk, I'm not sure how that stuff works myself but hopefully it would be implemented in a way to fit their game.

  • @lebaguette27 just made a post about outpost missions, one I included was a post office, that would definitely fit with a city. Deliver voyages to the traders to sell to other pirates.

  • I love all of these ideas, just amazing!!

Right I might have made a mistake when saying City. By City I did not have in mind a huge advanced city with big buildings or something that would remindlike black flag. As it was mentioned here I kind of had something in mind like tortuga, a bit of a city but a hell of a mess of a city... More like a pirate civilization city. I like PvP but you know, if that was enabled inside the "City" noone would really be able to kind of explore the place if you could get attacked by pretty much anyone. Maybe guards as someone mentioned could work well with this.

Yes mini outpost quests seem fun as well.
Just thought this could be a nice addition and now that this has some attention lets hope rare comes up with something greater maybe?

  • @lebaguette27 What you are asking for can be best described by watching Amazon's "Black sails". The town of Nassua, a pirate occupied town with brothels, bars, marketplaces and even a few small farms.

  • @sailorkek I'm adding that to my watch list haha!!! (If im being honest my main inspiration was from the game monkey island but god it's been years since I played that ao its all kinda blurry)

  • @xix-zeno-xix yea I see your point. Adding it to the game wont be a problem. Just pvp but adding a tag(guard) and a score to people working for the alliance.

But the feel of the game might be a problem ofc. Having npc and player guards to guard a pirate city might change the feeling of the game slightly. But is this a bad thing? I think we can use some new innovative features.

  • If there's going to be a safe zone, you should load there from the main menu, then when you are finished, you load into an outpost like normal. No access from in game, the only way to get there is to quit, and load from main menu.
