Community Spotlight - NovaS Soul

The light shines bright on another consistently creative Sea of Thieves player!

The Sea of Thieves community will never miss an opportunity to show off their pirating prowess. Whether it’s a well-framed photo of their adventurous exploits or a viral video of their skills with a cannon, we can always rely on our pirates to show us how to have a good time in-game.

So for this Spotlight, we caught up with NovaS Soul – a #SoTShot contest winner and proud owner of the Hat of Unfeasibly Glorious Fame – to discuss all things Sea of Thieves, what it takes to capture the perfect in-game screenshot and how to #BeMorePirate!

[Q]: Can you tell us a little about what got you into gaming?

[A]: My life with video games started with the Nintendo Entertainment System and The Legend of Zelda. Escaping reality and exploring an amazing fantasy world has always captured my heart and imagination. One of my fondest memories is sitting in front of my old tube TV with my grandma and having her manage my Rupees for me so I could afford the white tunic and beat the next level.

[Q]: Were you a Rare fan before Sea of Thieves? Do you have any favourite Rare games?

[A]: Of course! I spent countless fun nights growing up playing GoldenEye with my friends. Until someone picked Oddjob, and then arguments and chaos ensued. Another incredible series would of course be Banjo-Kazooie. The music, atmosphere, incredible characters and witty jokes keep me coming back for playthroughs to this very day.

[Q]: What other games are you currently playing? Any favourites?

[A]: I recently picked up The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD and hopped back on Fallout 76 for the newest update. Beyond that, I'm excited to play Halo Infinite at launch as it’s one of my all-time favourite game series.

[Q]: What brought you over to Sea of Thieves and its community?

[A]: A little email from Rare inviting me to the Technical Alpha! I thought to myself, an open world pirate game, this is going to be awesome! I played mostly solo for a good portion of the game’s launch and had a few different crews I would join here and there. I’ve met some pretty great people that I still play with to this very day and I’m grateful to have a community to share my piratical exploits with.

On the seas since the Technical Alpha with these controllers as proof of dedication!

[Q]: You’re known for sharing your pirating exploits on Twitter – can you pick a highlight?

[A]: I'd have to say my all-time favourite clip so far would be my Super Sword Lunge clip. Everything from the timing to the music playing mid-flight was outstanding. I've always had an image in my mind of how the clip would play out if I ever did it, and I couldn’t have asked for anything more awesome!

[Q]: As well as your video clips, you’re a fan of a well-posed #SoTShot – what makes a good in-game photo?

[A]: If I had to give any advice at all on taking a good in-game photo, it would be to not try to force it. Take your time, explore, visit random locations you may have not spent enough time in and let your mind wander. It will all come together in amazing ways.

[Q]: As a big #BeMorePirate advocate, how did it feel to win the Hat of Unfeasibly Glorious Fame?

[A]: The day I received the message saying I had won, I was absolutely ecstatic. I don’t post clips or pictures to gain followers or subscribers, I do it for fun and because I love it. To be acknowledged and appreciated for that is one of the best feelings in the world.

[Q]: What do you think it takes to #BeMorePirate?

[A]: That’s simple: be yourself, be creative and don’t be scared to put yourself out there. Whether you’re the greatest combatant on the seas or you’re out there taking pictures of the sun setting on the ocean, enjoy the game however you see fit. It is, after all, an escape from reality, so make it an escape to remember.

Hard to miss a pirate who’s always on the hunt for the next impressive shot.

[Q]: Thinking back, are there any standout moments for you in Sea of Thieves since you started playing?

[A]: One of my earliest standout moments would be the Skeleton Fort fights in year one. Those were some of the most brutal battles this game has ever seen. Four to five ships just brutalizing each other over 15,000 gold, I miss those days. Next came the Fort of the Damned which, of course, was one of the BEST additions of all time with its superior loot and low visibility/spooky atmosphere. I hope to see more content like this in the future.

[Q]: What are your favourite additions to Sea of Thieves over the past year?

[A]: Being a combat-driven player, I thought the Fort of Fortune was an excellent addition to the game. The eerie spawn music gets me excited every time I hear it and I pray for a good fight to be waiting on the horizon. The Sea of Thieves: A Pirate’s Life update was of course fantastic as well, my crew and I enjoyed taking our time exploring the rich environments. Being a huge Pirates of the Caribbean fan, how could I not love interacting with those characters in a game that’s been my home for years?

[Q]: What are your greatest achievements in a game, Sea of Thieves or otherwise?

[A]: In my years playing Sea of Thieves, I’ve been lucky enough to participate in and win quite a few competitions. I was one of the inaugural Sea of Champions tournament winners. I won the Creator Crew Spooky competition with my 'Haunting of Castaway Isle' trailer. I won the #SoTShot contest for the Under the Sea theme by exploring the ocean depths and taking a well-placed shot lit up by lightning.

My most recent accomplishment was becoming one of the first to earn the Hat of Unfeasibly Glorious Fame, which was absolutely outstanding. I can't wait for more of these contests to arise! Maybe one for best trick shots?

The Golden Hour Sails and the Hat of Unfeasibly Glorious Fame make quite the shot!

[Q]: If you had to choose a pirate and ship name, what would they be?

[A]: NovaS Soul, Captain of The Star Dust Maiden! Hopefully one day I can properly name her in the game too!

[Q]: What kind of other hobbies do you enjoy outside of gaming?

[A]: I am a theme park fanatic! The bigger and faster the rollercoaster, the better. I also love space and study different aspects of the universe and all the amazing things within it. I am also a pizza connoisseur and enjoy a nice chocolate whiskey on the rocks after a long day at work.

[Q]: Share a fun fact about yourself. Anything is fair game!

[A]: I am a full-fledged controller player! Always have been, always will be. Play how you like and what you are most comfortable with, nothing is impossible.
