Re-join timer

  • Suggestion:

Add a timer after log-out for 5-10 minutes that leaves the ship on the server wherever it is, floating alone, no matter what happens to it treat it as if someone is online until that timer is up and THEN drop the ship from the server. In the meantime, if the crew member who logged off in the last 5-10 minutes tries to rejoin the game, present the OPTION to rejoin onto the last ship they were on. This is a duct-tape style fix I have imagined to handle these infinite black screens which I have heard have been here since day 1 and are still an issue. I can't solo in these conditions, let alone try to do a fort or OOS mission or an athena's when every death could mean the end of my voyage and the end of my progress on whatever I'm working on.

    Rant:

There is no reason why I shouldn't be able to solo. Oh what's that you say, I can solo? Well that's not what my infinite black screen seems to be telling me at the last step or two of every single gosh darn athena voyage I have attempted this week. Yeah sometimes I got a friend on who I can play with, and yeah sometimes I have the patience to deal with a random queue open crew, and yeah sometimes I am willing to scour the discord's for someone to play with - but the truth of the matter is I just want to be able to play this game alone. I DON'T like people 99% of the time and I don't appreciate being shoe-horned into playing with another player JUST IN CASE the game decides to go into an infinite loading loop on me during my voyage.

I decided to just bum-rush an athena voyage to see if I couldn't JUST GET IT DONE for once but nooope, here's the thing right - two forced order of souls missions which as a solo player means easily 5-10 deaths per mission if you're lucky - and today I sure as hell wasn't as every wave had a minimum of 2 pistol skelly's, and some had snipers and blunders to boot (in all fairness, blunder skelly's aren't the worst thing, but snipers and pistols are hell.) This meant I was dying 2-3 times per wave, and when you're running 4-6 loading screens per skelly wave you bet your behind that one of them is going to be infinite. I officially resign to not solo again until something is figured out. I love this game but I guess I'll just have to wait around for one of my friends to decide to buy it, or maybe my brother will find some time in the next few weeks for me to log in again. I sure as heck hope so cause I really do love this game but I simply cannot express in words how annoyed I am with this trash.

    TL;DR:

PLEASE Black screen FIX (or implement re-join - YES, EVEN FOR EMPTY SHIPS. IM TRYING TO SOLO!!!)

    P.S.

PLEASE Do something about aimbot sniper + pistol skelly's - if not for everyone at least for solo players because this is so cancer I can't describe.

P.P.S. Sure hope I didn't break any rules in this post, but honestly y'all could probably ban me and I wouldn't mind right now with how ticked off at the game I am. And again, I literally absolutely love this game - I have never vibed with an experience so closely in my life and I WISH I WISH I WISH I could continue to enjoy it, but now as a pirate legend, just trying to do some solo content, maybe a bit of PvP here and there but I just can't, not with this issue lingering over every single encounter where death is a possibility (literally anything, even going to the pirate legend hideout since we can load into them where other people already are and who are rarely ever friendly. Why can we shoot each other here?? I'll never know.)

  • Well yeah what he says! But yesterday i could catch and sell chickens all day without crash.. i dunno what causes it sometimes its buggy and sometimes its perfect i dont understand

  • Yep. Even apart from infinite black screens, this is still a good idea. My internet is spotty, so I can't tell you how many times I've been sailing towards an outpost with a full ship just to suddenly get the gosh darn AllmondBeard error. :/

  • @vorondil1
Same here. My internet has been out since Saturday morning... Had to by an Xfinity wifi pass...

  • Absolutely agree with the re-join timer!

I think the skellies aren't that bad since the last nerf where they hit 50% of time, but I agree they can be annoying. When I get fed up solo, I kite them back to the ship and snipe/cannon them.

  • I've come up with some new concept ideas since I wrote this post.

The re-join timer can work such that you have ~7-10 minutes from the point when a disconnect occurred (whether the ship has people on it or not) to rejoin. This timer would only start if the player left the game without clicking either of the "Safe quit" methods (leave game and quit to desktop in the menu on PC, and whatever the 'official' alternatives are on xbox.) This would prevent the problem of not being able to get a new crew member for a while in an open crew if someone chooses to leave. Alt-F4 would still create this problem but I feel like it's a small price to pay.

Once this timer has been initiated, you have that 7-10 minutes to get to the join a crew screen (where you see the three ship types.) At this point a pop-up will occur asking if you wish to rejoin the crew you were last a part of. Declining this message would IMMEDIATELY re-open your slot on the crew and/or scuttle the ship if you were the last member.

After some heavy thought on the topic, and the ways that it might affect PvP for better or for worse - I cannot figure out a single way that this could be abused outside of griefing an open crew that you are a part of. This can be mitigated by perhaps creating a rule that if the individual who has disconnected is in the brig - or is voted to the brig during their absence - that their slot be immediately re-opened and their opportunity to rejoin the crew is lost. If you are an effective member of your crew and disappear for a few minutes, it is not likely that your crew (in their right minds) will brig you since it is likely to take 5-10 minutes for a new crew member to fill your slot anyways.

As a failsafe, ships who lose a crew member who is a part of this timer (they either decline to join or their timer ends) that your ship gets moved up in the "Fill my roster" queue for a quicker join time to get that slot filled since the ship has already waited some time with a missing slot.

All of these idea's in mind it might be important to note that I exclusively want this feature for soloing. I understand that solo is not the intended way to play this game, but you guys have to understand that a lot of us just enjoy solo-ing this game. I do not complain when a player galleon, or even a fleet of allied ships try to get onto me when I'm solo - that is a risk that I take as a solo player. However, I shouldn't be penalized by the game itself in a way that is not a natural part of the game (skelly ships and storms and whatnot are natural, infinite black screen is not) just for being a solo player.

  • I actually think this is how it currently works except we can't see the timer and we don't have an option to rejoin when we start back up. You have to be friends with someone in the crew or have them invite you.

When someone gets kicked out the crew, people can't seem to join until about five minutes later. I think rare put this in so people could rejoin without a random taking their spot.

Unfortunately, if you aren't friends or they aren't online, it is difficult to rejoin that crew.

  • @marsmayflower also doesn't work if you were solo because the ship will instantly scuttle when you alt+f4. I am currently just doing gold hoarders DR missions and ganking forts when I solo since I can usually get a turn-in done this way. Sadly the only reason I'm able to do this at forts is thanks to Line of Sight manipulation against gun skelly's - but at least I can do Something I guess. I just really want to be able to turn in some chests of legends, it's a real bother to not be able to work on my reputation when I don't have a friend online to play with. (Yeah again I could random crew but I simply don't enjoy the game as much this way. I'd rather stumble across a crew missing a person on the seas and join them that way.)
