Black flags on SOME ships??

  • Hi all,

Just a quick question, couldn't find the answer on the forum:
Why do some ships have black flags (on mainmast) and others white? I thought this may be due to PVP or something but sank 4 ships with kills and still white. Then the other day my buddy and I noticed our flag was randomly black.
What's the mechanic behind this? Or is it just utterly random?

  • I have been wondering the same thing and found little info on it. So far what i have heard is it happens when you fight a kracken

  • @usingjet Hmm, interesting, we were in a sloop at the time and didn't fight a kraken until later on in the day. I've been doing all sorts to try and figure this out.
    So far it's not:
PVP, sinking ships, stealing chests, being on a voyage, locking someone in the brig, repeatedly sinking the SAME ship, scuttling, mermaid use.

  • I saw this today and wondered how it was accomplished as well. Hopefully someone knows the answer.

  • Shipwright on the dock sells ship customization items.

  • It may also have something to do with pirate legend or getting to level 50 with one or all of the factions

  • @tripleplayed ahh never noticed a black flag there. I'll have to check again. Thnx

  • Black is the order of souls flag. Second tier of the bilge rat flag I think.

  • @tripleplayed They don't sell mainmast flags, only sails and we had it and certainly didn't buy it.

  • @usingjet Nah, like I said me and my buddy had a black flag randomly on a sloop and we're both nowhere NEAR legend.

  • Welp. We got to the bottom of that mystery, excellent insights.

  • What caused it? :o

  • @tripleplayed
does not sell black flags, sells only sails and hulls. I noticed on my skin that when I bought a hull, my sail changed from white to black. I think the color depends on the skin of the hull

  • and I have not bought sails. so by force it depends on the hull. furthermore, if you notice during the loading screens, there is a galleon with yellow and orange flag as well as the sails.

  • Might Be the crew who, been longest on the server. The only concurrent factor I’ve seen everytime I get the black flag it’s been on My longer sessions that lasted many hours. Has nothing to do with other ship customization 100%

  • I have raised the black twice. Once on galleon (level 15ish):

Once on a sloop (level 10ish):

As far as I can tell it's the player who has been on the instance for the longest amount of time. When I had it on the Galleon I did not kill a single player, or sink a ship. When I had it on the Sloop I probably sank 4 ships. No sail or hull upgrades were had when we raised the black (the skulls on the Galleon were puraches after we docked with the black flag already flying)

  • What I don't understand, is if I have the black flag and can see it on my ship, why my crew see a white flag? I know other crews see it as black, that's the whole point I thought. But why not our own crews?

  • Flags change colors accordingly if you activate one of the titles that you receive from a faction. If you don't activate any, your glag stays white.

  • I've heard it's awarded to a ship that has sunk all other ships on that server, but that doesn't tally with what people here are reporting.

  • I’m pretty sure my flag turned black after I but a chest of sorrows on my sloop. It did seem to stay black after I sold the chest, so I’m not sure if the chest was the cause.

  • I've seen my flags change while sailing around. One minute they are white, the other moment they're black (or it might be the dark red from the Sea Dog sails I'm sporting, as I'm colorblind as f***).

  • @hex-ten

Im necro-ing this thread because I want to know too.

  • My working theory; We know from promotional materials that custom Flags are probably planned, if they weren't already implemented at some point during internal testing.
It's not in the game now, but switching your Hulls and/or Sails around might trigger some unfinished code, which turns your flag black.

Of course if it's a bug, almost anything could trigger it, hence why no one can give a definitive answer as to the cause.
Just accept it as a random glitch, and lets wait for the real thing to get here.

  • I noticed the flag being black once. I was on a sloop and had just fought Skelly Captains. I did not buy any ship upgrades.

  • I’ve never seen or heard of this before.

As far as I’m aware there are no events that trigger a change of colour to the flag, nor can it be bought.

    Sounds like a bug.

Changing flags is something that I’m massively hopeful Rare implement into the game at some point.

It’d be common sense to utilise them in some way, right?

  • @tyburn-ketch Agreed. There are several empty customization slots for the ships. I'd like to see the ability to change flags, wheel, captains quarters, main deck and lower deck trim and cannons just to name a few. I'd also like a better shader mechanic (like destiny) where you can further color your ship to differentiate from others. I mean there's pretty much 4 ship designs sailing around right now. I would like to make mine all black like the pearl if I could. Right now I've got sovereign hull, seadog sails and seadog figurehead. Closest to all black you can get from what I've seen.

  • @hex-ten hi dude Iwould say that is a visual bug or something becose a couple of time when I played with my girlfrien(so not pvp) on our sloop (never cross the kraken) I seen our flag black and when I told my GF that we got a black flag she look at it and replay no its still white. This think happening to her and I told the flag still white. I would say it's a random visual problem

  • @hex-ten this is a glitch caused by that the flag is a two sided texture, from time to time it will glitch through and show as black

  • Well regardless of what causes it... I think we’d all like the option to change those flags.

I want to raise the black and thieve from merchants.

Or raise the red and give them no quarter.

  • @hex-ten unfortunately right now it's just a glitch there is no true way to get a black flag but later on in the updates they do plan on adding custom Flags to the main mast

  • I've come across this as well, however in my case it was just a shading issue caused by the sun. I looked up and was like wow my flags black, however upon getting into some different lighting the flag turned back to white. I don't think the flags are ever truly black, it's just a shading problem
