Ship Customization

  • Back in 2016, IGN interviewed Mike Chapman about what the game was even was. In the interview (on the second page), when asked about ship customization, Mike revealed that there will be more than just cosmetic upgrades. This includes cannon types, reinforced hulls, or upgraded paddles(which hints towards a rowboat, or the option to row your ship if sailing against the wind, as seen in Pirates of the Caribbean).

While there's hope for at least a bit of vertical progression, he also stated that there will be bigger focus on horizontal progression. In the article there are other things such as this, when asked about enemies: "Chapman’s examples are 'Krakens and pirate skeletons, skeletal lords, sea serpents [and] pirate ghosts.'" The painting canvas, a way of keeping screenshots on your ship, as well as the idea that you have to do a certain task to get off of the Ferry of the Damned are also mentioned.

However, keep in mind that this was almost 2 years ago, so some of these ideas might have been changed or completely dropped.

  • A lot can change in 2 years.

  • @the-lion-turtle True, I will add that some of these ideas might have changed.

  • If they go back on being able to change out sails, cannons and all that i'd say they'll have a lot of refunds to hand out

  • I can already see the tears stream down my cheek as my P****d up Galley goes under!

My first thought upon seeing that picture was "they're going to have trouble getting that out if they don't raise sails before anchor..."

    Haha my thoughts exactly

  • Things change , I'd be interested to know if Rare regret some of their earlier postulating. One thing seems obvious now though - they are alot more tight lipped nowadays - no talk of the Kraken and they speak of things like chickens in the game as being an incredible ground breaking big deal. So the game now has - skeletons, sharks, and terrifyingly ferocious chickens.

  • @shaggiedo Lets just keep in mind that as much as they have said things, they've also not unsaid things. Basically, lets not just assume something has changed just because its not been seen. Especially when there are multiple sources stating otherwise.

If you are just assuming its not going to be this way because its a feeling you have, you're no better than the people that assume this game is going to suck because it doesn't have any content. You're judging something that isn't complete, despite the facts being right in front of you.

Calm your expectations yes, but also be a little realistic and stick to what Rare has said as well.

I draw your attention to this:

  • @ethnine Yeah man but what about them chickens.

  • Plenty of time for DLC and expansions on the mechanics of the game. Patience folks.

  • @shaggiedo word is they cluck :).

  • @ethnine Now you're talking.

  • @porkin5 I mean we shouldn't have to buy a game hoping that the dlc makes up for shortcomings XD

  • @the-warcrombie I don't buy games based on content. I buy based on the experience that particular game may, or may not, give me. With Sea Of Thieves, I'd be content on just sailing around the world, as it was quite a relaxing change of pace from the twitch-based shooters and cookie-cutter RPG games that flood the market these days.

  • @shadowstrider-7 buy a sailing simulator then

  • @the-warcrombie I'm quite content with SoT, but thanks for your suggestion.

  • @shadowstrider-7 I've seen this a few times. I think its important to remember that just because you personally think the game is fine, doesn't mean you're right. When it comes to things like this I normally look at the majority to determine whether the concern is warranted or not. And its quite clear that the concern of the lack of content in Sea of Thieves is a real one, and its one that is shared among industry leaders as well. All major game networks have posted their concern about this subject, and Microsoft has also made it very clear that Rare needs to perform.

So don't try and dismiss someones valid concern, just because you personally don't feel that way. When in fact its your perspective that is actually more inline to be incorrect. You are both free to have your opinions, there's nothing wrong with that. But it doesn't make the problem suddenly go away just because you feel a certain way that goes against the norm.

  • @the-warcrombie Ship cosmetics have been 100% confirmed. When I made the statement that things may have changed, I was talking very generally.

  • @ethnine
Actually, I remember quite specifically that Phil Spencer came to the studio once. Played the game, gave them their blessing and has ever since.

While there are a lot of people on the forums who come to express their opinion on the lack of content. I'd say that an equal amount of people believes this game will deliver, and are just not that interested in discussing the "lack of" content in a game that hasnt released yet.

All I'm trying to say is that it's hard to determine the opinion of the majority. I think its fairly split in the middle, you dont, others think otherwise. Seems like a good balance to me.

  • @erinom3 See, I look outside of just the forums for my baseline. Media outlets are where most gamers gain their general gaming information, their perception speaks louder than a few people on a gaming forums. Again, the lack of content perception has been following Sea of Thieves for years, its nothing new at all. And its re-hashed every time the public gets a look inside to what Rare is making.

And that is concerning. At least to me as a smart consumer. Hence I have not pre-ordered, and will likely wait it out and see what happens.

I don't care as much about cosmetics as much as I do making the ship fit my playstyle. It was originally said you could swap out cannons, get thicker hulls, bigger sails...if that doesn't come through I'm expecting my refund to come through XD

I didn't dismiss anyone's concern. Are you reading the same post? Or just reading way too much into it? I'm confused as to how you assumed I dismissed someone.

  • Who else thinks that placing a compass on the crows nest is a good idea??

  • @gunmonkey92 Since everyone already has a compass, I don't see why you'd need one?
