A 7-Year Veteran on the Verge of Quitting – The Cheater Situation is Unsustainable

  • To the Rare Development Team,

I am writing this message with a heavy heart, as a pirate who has sailed the Sea of Thieves almost daily since its launch nearly seven years ago. I have defended this game, celebrated its evolutions, and convinced countless friends to join me in this unique adventure. Today, however, my loyalty and passion are faltering, and I feel like you are pushing me away.

I am aware of your recent decision to review your banning policies, perhaps with the intention of giving a "second chance." Whatever the goal was, the practical result that we, the players, are experiencing on the servers has been catastrophic and is destroying the game experience.

In the last few days, especially yesterday and today, the cheater situation has escalated to a level I have never seen before. This is no longer about the occasional encounter with an unfair player; it is an invasion. Just today, I was forced to leave a server where a single cheater was instantly teleporting from ship to ship, slaughtering every single player across the entire map. There was no way to run, no way to fight, and no way to simply play the game. My session, and everyone else's, was ruined by a single individual acting with total impunity.

This was not an isolated incident. This is the new, frustrating normal.

The problem is that the impact of these cheaters is no longer confined to PvP. Their toxic presence is ruining every single activity on the Adventure servers. How can we even think of completing a World Event, a Tall Tale, a voyage, or simply enjoy exploring when the entire server is held hostage by a cheater who can nullify hours of progress in an instant? If this is the situation for those trying to enjoy the PvE aspects of the game, one can only imagine the disaster unfolding in PvP, which is meant to be a test of skill, not dishonesty.

After nearly seven years of adventures, treasures, and memorable battles, seeing the game I love reduced to this state is disheartening. It no longer feels like a pirate world of danger and opportunity, but rather a cheaters' playground where honest players are just waiting victims.

Many of my friends and fellow crewmates have already abandoned ship, tired of this unfair fight. I stayed, always hoping you would take serious and definitive action. Instead, things only seem to be getting worse.

I implore you, on behalf of all the veteran players who have invested thousands of hours into the world you created: acknowledge the severity of this crisis. Your current measures are not enough. We need a more robust anti-cheat system, hardware bans, stricter restrictions for new accounts, and above all, the assurance that your priority is to protect the community that made Sea of Thieves a success.

I don't want to stop playing, but I cannot continue to invest my time and energy in such a relentlessly frustrating experience. I am asking you to act, and to act quickly, before more veterans like me lower their flags for the last time.

Hoping to one day sail again on safer seas,

    A soon-to-be-retired pirate.

The last 3 days all my session ended up with blatant hacker using invisibility and no nameplate from "far/medium" distance, teleporting, wallhack, aimkey, spawning object like explosive keg and I pass. All this in Openworld

Not gonna lie I been nolifing playing 50hrs a week since a month or 2.

What happened the last 3 days, it never happened to me before to see that many blatant hacker in openworld. Is it just random encounter? Can they find specific people and choose opponent in openworld like they do in hourglass? Like what is going on right now, why my last 3 days been like this, so I started to do a bit of research and I see mrs peppigno having the same kind of experience in hes last few days. My research is done thank you to peppigno84, im concluding that "they" unbanned hackers and its spreading like it never spread before, because every one know hacking software and these kind of behavior spread true friends.

This is why there is a high flux of hacker in open world at the moment, they do unban hacker wave by GIVING A "SECOND CHANCE".

How to fix this? Reban every single people that was on the banned list even if they did not get caught hacking again. Never give a second chance. Get better anticheat

  • I like to see video of this and why nobody else is reporting this exact issue?
    Why are players keeping quiet....

  • @peppigno84 @PrudentOpossum9

That hasn't even happened yet, the reason there are a lot of cheaters suddenly is they got an update and have global tp now.

You can only hope it gets patched asap, sot cheats would be useless if it wasn't for all the exploits that they could do

  • In the last 3 days there was a new set of cheats released. Devs already know about them, but it will take a bit before they can fix it most likely.

  • @peppigno84 I feel the same way, I have played since launch i was just trying to do some hg and some random (not my opponent) grappled me and teleported with me onto a galleon where there are a bunch of cheaters saying they're reporting me for teleporting what is with the sorry state of this game, I tried to fire myself out of their cannon to mermaid back to my boat/hg battle and they just kept grappling me back so I was forced to scuttle, game is completely unplayable I've seen 2 people teleporting in about 10 hg battles today

  • @peppigno84 unrelated, cheaters arent getting another chance.

  • @hiradc you're right, the two things might not be correlated. But whether they are new accounts or reinstated old players, the core of the issue doesn't change: the game is in an unplayable state because of the overwhelming number of cheaters.

As long as they can simply create a new account after being banned, the problem will never be solved. The only real solution is to implement hardware ID (HWID) bans. It's the only way to protect the honest player base.

here. that's what it looks like. This happened to me. TODAY.

  • @peppigno84 they do hardware ban, cheaters just use cleaners

    1. The unban wave - it hasn't happened yet, and it's not for those who cheated.

    2. HWID bans - I don't think they work. Cheat software includes HWID/IP ban evasion features.

Met a cheater who claimed he wants to turn over a new leaf.
Whenever he played without any cheat software active, he can play for maybe an hour before he is automatically or manually banned.
Whenever he played with it active (toggled off), he can play for days before he is manually banned.
When he's auto-banned (maybe a technical mechanism triggered?), he can create a new alt account without any purchase.
When he's manually banned (not sure what triggered a human to look, maybe a video?), he has to purchase a new license account - xbox accounts are cheaper, but steam accounts lasts longer or something like that.
So I'm guessing the auto-ban evasion probably has to do with the HWID/IP ban evasion feature of the cheat software.

    --
Stay out of hourglass till it gets patched, or wait till the hype over the new cheat update cools off.

Outside hourglass, there are less cheaters.

I did a FoF session last night in NA servers. Fought 3 ships. Some returned for round 2 and 3. About 1 hour 30 minutes. No cheaters met yet. Lucky me.

  • 1 I perfectly understand your point about reinstating players, and I'm not arguing that. But as I was saying, the bottom line doesn't change. Whether that's the cause or something else, for us players the result is the same: right now, the game experience is being ruined by an unprecedented number of cheaters. The problem exists, it's serious, and it's happening now.

2 On the HWID ban, however, I completely disagree. Your reasoning is exactly like saying it's useless to put a lock on your front door because an expert thief with the right tools can pick it. I'm putting a lock on my door, and a sturdy one at that. An HWID ban does exactly this: it raises the bar enormously. It forces cheaters to use more complex and expensive paid software (with "spoofers"), it completely eliminates the category of "casual" cheaters who use free tools, and it adds a technical hurdle that many are unwilling or unable to overcome. It's not the definitive solution, but it's a fundamental deterrent that is currently missing. Leaving the door wide open is not an option.

Finally, thank you for the advice about the Hourglass, but that's precisely what highlights the severity of the situation. I stopped playing Hourglass a long time ago for this very reason—it became a hotbed for cheaters. The problem is that the infestation has now spread everywhere, even into regular Adventure sessions. I'm not just talking about the blatant cheaters who teleport and are invisible; I'm also talking about the more subtle ones using aimbots or quickswaps. You recognize them immediately: they are new accounts with very few hours in the game, yet they have perfect aim and inhumanly fast actions. The entire game ecosystem is compromised.

You were fortunate to have such a quiet session. Unfortunately, your experience seems to be the exception, not the rule these days. To help you understand what I mean when I talk about an "unbearable situation," if you're interested, I can post the video I saved just yesterday. It shows a player teleporting from ship to ship to kill the entire server. This should clarify the kind of problem that I and many others are constantly facing.

  • @peppigno84
    2. HWID ban is not working - I didn't say don't use it. I'm saying HWID bans might already be in use and is not working. (I say might, because I don't know the technical details. I arrived at this conclusion based on the story I've described in my previous comment.) The cheaters that you see - most of them are probably using a popular cheat software that received a teleportation update a few days ago. That software is not free. It comes packaged with HWID spoofers, or as @captain-knyt mentioned, they call it "cleaners". The locks are there and the thieves have already picked the locks. And the lockpicking company has made good money.

I'm in agreement that the cheat situation is bad and acknowledge that you experience it severely in your servers (not sure which region) these days.

I'm wondering when it would make sense for Rare to sue that cheat distributor.

Till then, the naughty kids with money and/or scripts would be trolling the seas.

  • @raft2c7c said:

    November, 2022-ish.

To be fair, it really should be MS going after all these cheat devs on behalf of their subsidiaries.

  • @burnbacon Just sent you one, ran into 1 today expecting to be cooked, they were chill because i was, they only target people that get hirate as they get a reaction from them which feeds there behaviour, if people just ignore them and skuttled they would get bored real quick, issue is too many people like to argue

  • Today ran into a cheater, recording here showing me chatting with them and then them harpooning me whilst teleporting forcing me on there boat the other side of the map
    [Mod Edit]
They really need to do something as this was in adventure, not hourglass, they can litterally teleport anything they like onto the boat too after chatting with them. There needs to be a better way at banning them, as when chatting with this guy all he does when he gets banned which is normally less than a week is go and get a refund for the account from xbox and then create a new one, rinse and repeat, doesn't cost him a thing and doesn't even have to download the game again, surely you could ban the IP's or force a link between steam and xbox or put some type of code in one of the files when someones banned so if they try to open the game without redownloading then a ban is instant, Your owned by Xbox which is owned by Microsoft, surely it can't be that hard to go up the line and try to figure something out that would stop it

  • Evidence, Check.

Why nobody sends these videos but instead uploads them to YT? idk...it weird.
Many even dont bother recording evidence...another weird thing.
With todays Consoles and PC owners, you have free ways to "capture" quick video clips. Steam offers them, Xbox has them, not sure about PS5.

    Players are strange.

  • @burnbacon ingorance is bliss.

When encountering cheaters folks ca be mad and rage quit, dont have free space for clips or just don't bother enough to go trough process becouse there is lot of games on market and it's not player role to police them.

If service became unreiable i will stop using it - if game starts to be cheater infested im not going to police product i payed for i will just move and let game sink.

With this amount of free time for cheap ragebaiting new forum users you cloud probably make diffrence with recording cheaters tho.
Go there and do something usefull ;)

What is up with this gaslighting?
If you ever recorded and reported anything to Rare, you would know that you can only upload 50MB size files through their own "attach file" system. That is why people upload to YouTube, or other websites and then link the video as part of their report.
A 1 min clip is easily 200MB for me.

2nd: People stop reporting cheaters because they return on another alt account less than 10 minutes later. It's a waste of time.

    Players are strange.

Blaming legit players instead of cheaters is cool, I guess.

here. that's what it looks like. This happened to me. TODAY.

Can't even identify who the cheater is.
HG battle banners should identify the opponent crew.

  • @raft2c7c The problem there is that you don't know for sure the person teleporting is your opponent, one of the teleporters I've seen mid hg match was not my opponent.

  • @best0fthewest
That's true. I've seen the same with the magic bucket cheats. The cheater wasn't the opponent but someone else in the server.

But if there's multiple reports of similar experiences against the same HG opponent in different servers, it'll build a case, especially if the cheater is boosting a pirate.

The cheater would eventually be caught being blatant. And the boosted pirate would've been identified for hourglass-ing with the cheaters multiple times.

Back when I used to report cheaters - I used to see the same boosted pirates all the time. The blatant cheaters - they get banned and get a new account everyday. But the boosted pirates with skeleton curse, gold curse, insider advanced cosmetics - they are not banned for repeatedly playing with cheaters. The boosted pirates usually stay on their ship, while the blatant cheater flies over to machine gun everybody.

  • @prudentopossum9 cheaters can make a new account and run a cleaner for free. They aren't getting unbanned, its just that a new teleport feature has hit the shelves with the most popular cheat. Many cheaters are getting on to test it out, that's why they can get to your ship so quickly. For now, they have actually detected the cheat, and any account that is injected will get banned in 20 minutes. This probably will not last long though.

  • @mulvaney76 this can be made a lot harder by MS if you get three strikes for cheating and they permaban your full Xbox account.

The only way to really fix this is if Rare/ MS goes after the developer of cheat software. You think this can't be done?

"Blizzard Entertainment has been awarded $8.5 million in damages after winning a copyright infringement case against German company, Bossland.

"Fortnite cheater forced to pay $175,000 after Epic Games lawsuit"

"Judge issues legal permaban, $500K judgment against serial Destiny 2 cheater"

    It's time for harder action.

  • @bozaandbanitza yeah rare sucks they don’t care about their game anymore. i know people that have been quick swapping for years and haven’t been banned on their MAIN ACCOUNT

  • @burnbacon because those of us not on pc have to save the video, edit the video, and upload it to a 3rd party site to have a response of “scuttle is an option” given to me after witnessing a brig fix and bucket our boat to repeatedly spawn kill us because “his mom was diagnosed with a terminal illness” or to just mute the in game chat while 4 people are saying vile, racist things to you.

I have 5 people I STILL need to report but it’s almost like why? It won’t do anything, I got a 2 week comm ban for typing f**k and when I send clips of wild things I’m told to mute them…… right.

EAC is a joke and most have stated this since the announcement of EAC. They do ban waves that developers have to go and undo, second chance, and hope for the best.

People constantly make posts about the ability for easier reporting.

  • I can usually tell when you fight a ship full of 3 naked pirates with ninja masks, all had 4 hours in game at most and could not miss.

@BurnBacon also we put in the time to submit cheaters and they just get a new account. Seems like it’s not worth it. I use my time to be told not good enough, or they ban them and immediately they are back with a new account.

  • This season has to be the worse I have seen the game. Nearly every game at the moment has cheaters in it and we don't even play hourglass...

The biggest problem allowing cheaters to continue is that Xbox, Steam accounts are so easy to create again once banned. This goes for all the other platforms for games also, Uplay, EA apps etc...

They need to make said accounts more valuable, so people don't want to lose them and make them harder to sign up to etc.

SoT is one of the best games I have ever played and at the moment I don't want to even touch it.
