Special loot linked to social media presence - dislike

  • Hi there folks,

so, it is in the title alrdy. I really really dislike the attitude of having to follow social media for gaining loot.
I have 0 social media as it is a form of social cancer for me (maybe I am simply too old for that),
and I really dislike the development of me having to get active there in order to earn certain ingame progress.
I just skipped on it, idc, but I want to voice how much I dislike this development.
Did I mention I dislike it?

  • I'm sensing there's a message here hidden deep within a cryptic code 😅.

Just teasing, it is unfair to have so much in game content reliant on externals. I get they want to drive engagement and the twitch views or reshare requirements on tweets etc already accomplish that. For a game that prides itself on immersion it is a strange approach to require so much info gathering outside.

  • Would it really kill them to post it to the forums?

  • I admire the conviction to stay off of social media as it is a cancer, but tbf it is pretty standard in society nowadays, so Rare can’t be expected to sit on their hands and not use it to promote their in game event over a weekend dedicated to the community.

  • @tesiccl

Would it kill them to post it to the forums too?

  • The social media thing to me is whatever, it's just part of the times and space.

What bothers me about it is that rather than just create a new item that could last a product lifetime of community weekends, they sacrifice one of the 2 universally significant rare items in the game.

The same people do the social media thing and a lot of people avoid it (and many are never even aware to begin with) So they sacrificed the significance of organic box of secrets encounters so the giveaway hat wearers and streamer/social media crews can get another freebie box (or 5) screenshot for twitter.

One new item for these events and it would be fine, it would be exclusive to community weekends and rare and the social media folks can have their screenshots.

Never been a fan of sacrificing significance in the environment for social media engagement. Wouldn't be difficult to create new significance without sacrifice.

The box of secrets and the shrouded ghost were always status busters. They didn't care who anyone was, what their status was, now the box of secrets is no longer that. That's the unfortunate part imo.

  • @wolfmanbush It would be honestly better if it was its own item. It would be exclusive to Community days. I finally got to play a community day and actually do a pop-up plunder. I got a box. it was a piece of loot. I got my first actual box 5 days ago and it was special.

  • @wolfmanbush ok, wow. I did not even know this box existed, let alone how to get it. And i did not know the "special loot" that was hidden behind social media was that specific mystery thing. wow :D i dont even know what to feel right now. I guess i still dont care, but it certainly does not make the issue better haha

  • @wolfmanbush I know a guy who got 2 because he dug first, then server merged and got instant second. It also lost its allure for me, but then with no achievement or commendation tied to it I've never been too fussed especially as I detest the roar.

  • @pithyrumble probably not but most browsers don’t show images posted on this forum.

  • @tesiccl what browsers don't show images? I know I've always struggles to post them, but I didn't realize some struggled to show them.

  • @captain-coel I’ve used Safari, Firefox, DuckDuckGo and seen nothing.

I had the same issue. Thanks to @ZiG-ZaG-LTU, I resolved it by accepting the cookies instead of rejecting it. I hope it helps.

  • It is hit/miss for me on Firefox and Chrome on my phone.
Don't forget images require hosting for the forums, so there would still be a link. Tho they'd probably link X/Meta companies still.

  • @jetorchidee97 OHHHH that helps ha!

  • Community Weekend is about just that: The Community. And since this is an online game, that community exists online.

It is not something you have to participate in, but it is how people who play this game are connected. The crew I sail with regularly involves ONE person that lives in the city I live in, and two others that live in the same state. The rest are scattered across the lower 48, and a couple people in two different provinces in Canada... we connect outside of the game in a Discord Server... otherwise we wouldn't be able to communicate.

But again, you don't have to participate in it, and everything that the Popup Plunder gives can be found naturally on the seas (I have gotten 2 chests of wondrous secrets from Popup Plunder... and 2 found naturally in the roar).

The intent of it is to inspire community engagement, since live service games today live or die depending on that.

  • I agree, its disgusting. I started by Just leaving my phone in mute streaming but i dont really care anymore of ugly reskins.

Instead of forcing peoples to use platforms to promote the game, they should find way to make engage peoples in Activities.

Look at helldrivers 2,u dont really Need corporate tricks to get profit.

Just make a damn good experience.

  • You would think after the "massive failure" the Gold Hoarder hunt was and its media hunt. They...try something better.

(and with FL banning social media for younger adults) :p
