Embargo lifted! See what the press has to say about the forthcoming Mega Update on 30th April!

  • We've created a thread here to collect the articles and press coverage of the recent visit to Rare and experience of the new updates incoming to Sea of Thieves on 30th April, see what they have to say!

First off - Windows Central -

We went hands-on with the first mission in Rare's "Tall Tales" feature, which is the studio's ambitious attempt to bring cinematic story experiences into Sea of Thieves' multiplayer world.

If you're already a fan of Sea of Thieves, you're going to love the Anniversary Update. If you're skeptical, April 30, 2019, will be the perfect time to jump on with a friend and give it another look.

    Daily Star

Sea of Thieves' first-anniversary update is going to add so much more to the game, it's almost embarrassing to other service-based models that share the same space. Here's what you need to know.

    Polygon

The anniversary update is full of new content, but its meant to be accessible to “day one” players, and will add new ways to get to the best parts of the Sea of Thieves experience.

    Eurogamer

Sea of Thieves is, I think, a phenomenal story generator - and excels in delivering the kinds of unpredictable encounters that can so frequently turn a routine play session into a genuinely unforgettable one.

I was a little apprehensive when Rare first announced that its multiplayer pirate extravaganza would be getting a new competitive-focussed standalone mode....

Based on the handful of matches I managed to play at a recent Sea of Thieves press event, Arena Mode is astonishingly good fun.

    Shacknews

Players will be able to get into Sea of Thieves, experience a rich narrative, go on an epic adventure, all while experiencing the foundation that made the game so appealing to so many players.

It’s worth noting that Chris Allcock, the author of Sea of Thieves’ first novel, Athena’s Fortune, has been involved in the writing of Tall Tales. This should speak volumes to the kind of story players can expect, not just a few lines of dialogue from a character, but an actual narrative arc spanning multiple play sessions. Interestingly, Mike Chapman hinted that there might be some references and nods to between the two stories, Shores of Gold and Athena’s Fortune.

Shores of Gold isn’t the only story coming to Tall Tales. While we didn’t discuss specifics of future stories, during my interview time with Senior Designer Shelley Preston, she was able to talk to how Tall Tales functions as a tool for the developers, “Each of the earlier campaigns, like The Hungering Deep, was its own fudged-together story whereas Tall Tales is a tooling set that designers and artists – everybody – can use to create content. We’ve got that tool set now, now it’s just what we do with it.”

Interview with Shelley Preston and Joe Neate -

I didn’t think it was possible, but I walked away from the interview, and the day, even more excited about the future of Sea of Thieves than I already was. The passion and dedication of the team at Rare is palpable and their commitment to Sea of Thieves and their community is unmatched.

“It is competitive, but we’re hoping it’s a much more accessible competitive to a much broader audience,” Shelley Present, Senior Designer, explained to me during our interview time. “Kind of like how Adventure was a more accessible online multiplayer game – we saw it was a lot of people’s first multiplayer game or some who thought they didn’t like multiplayer but they enjoyed it in Sea of Thieves. We’re hoping that Arena can do that for the competitive side of Sea of Thieves.”

    Telegraph

This is the kind of thing that Sea of Thieves, Rare’s emergent multiplayer pirate adventure, was made for. Those stirring campfire tales of teamwork, peril and victory.

    PCGamer

With April 30th's anniversary update, though, it feels more like the game I hoped it would've been at launch, bringing a 10 hour+ story campaign and an uproarious, nerve-wracking PvP Arena mode.

There's a lot to deepen players' investment in the game, then, and I'm impressed Rare was given the leeway to keep building Sea of Thieves into what it always deserved to be. It's no small thing to add a whole campaign, with entirely new systems and voice acting. Sea of Thieves spent a year finding its stride—now it's got most of the pieces in place for an exciting future.

IGN - lots of piratey nsfw language ;)

In the long term, perhaps what’s most exciting here is the language Rare uses to talk about Tall Tales and Arena. They aren’t referred to as new modes, or options - they’re “platforms”, ideas to be built on. Tall Tales could extend to whole new campaigns, or one-off event episodes. Arena could become more than a single mode, or throw in daily challenges for those with less time to jump in and out of at their leisure, without the commitment required from a full quest line.

    The Sun

Everything we've seen of the anniversary update suggests that there really has never been a better time to take to the high seas.

  • My spottings so far: (Taken from the IGN videos)

    • THE ARENA TAVERN! (at least I guess it is) - At 5 seconds into the Arena video!
    • Treasure chests that can be opened with gold in them - in the Tall Tales video where they arrive at Crooks Hollow and killed some skeletons.
  • A lot to read! Thanks Kat!

  • Some epic, epic information here... Cannot wait now for April 30th!

And this guy is going to give me nightmares for days!

  • For such a "Big" update, its seems rather small to me.

Still nothing for Pirate Legends, so nothing to bring me back yet.

Some stuff below from all the stuff KattTruewalker kindly linked too.

Chests can now be opened, and items are inside
    50 fish types to hunt
All animals now drop meat after murdering them. YUM YUM YUM.
Cooking meat is now an activity that will earn reward by handing in better cooked food.
The mast can be destroyed and require repair, pulled up by ropes and then 3 wooden planks.
The capstan can have the handles destroyed and require repair.
The ships wheel can have handles shot off and require repair.
The harpoon can pull players off ships as well as used for grabbing other items and animals.

For such a "Big" update, its seems rather small to me.

Still nothing for Pirate Legends, so nothing to bring me back yet.

Instead we have a massive amount of content for everyone sailing the seas, new and old, experienced and those just dipping their toes in the waters - new ways to play, new Trading Companies, and a whole raft of quests, the Arena and a significant change to ship damage which will pose challenges for every pirate.

@PirateCraggy Good thinking and thanks for sharing that one, I reckon there'll be a good few more interviews published later as well :)

First, they're hardly gonna market endgame stuff in the initial press hands on. Second... really? You aren't interested in 20 odd hours (according to Eurogamer) of story quests? Would you come back if those quests were pirate legend exclusive? I get wanting stuff for Pirate Legend and it'd be cool if the very final quest needed you to be one but how does it ruin anything it if it isn't?

Personally I hope they add a dozen new rep factions that need maxing out before there's any PL content. Weed out all the Legend-in-name-only's who haven't played since launch.

I'm happy for all the new players and casuals that have not reached Pirate Legend. Its great. You can ignore the factions you do not like on the way to Pirate Legend. I would suggest that most players are not going to start again though and level up the hunter faction just for kicks.. It will still be repetitive.

Three new PL only factions would have been better imo.

BTW! I never said anything about ruining anything! You said that.

  • Another article here, this one from EGX and the issue of sustainable working - lots of info in here, not just sustainable working.

"It's been hard work at times. I think it's good that we can have these conversations at the studio, and talk about it with our fans. We have every intent to keep growing and keep updating and keep building this game. The future strategy slides, which I've been taking some people at the studio through, not only talk about what we want to bring to players, but they also talk about how we do that in a sustainable way. And I like that that's part of our future strategy."

  • @piratecraggy

    Another one from Ewan -

On feedback and working with the community -

I think we kind of take it from everywhere, whether it’s Twitter or it’s Reddit, it’s the forums, it’s any avenue. It’s videos, it’s however people communicate. We look at it, and we look at the sentiment and we try to figure that into the stuff going forward. Like even traps, that are coming as part of Tall Tales — the Fishing was feedback on more things to do on the ship, like in-between on those on the journeys. We were doing in-between the different Tall Tale quest points you were doing fishing.

  • @katttruewalker

Our boy Ewan has been a busy boy.

That's a huge & great "retrospective/looking to the future" article!!
Good on him.. think I'll have to go and read over it again.

  • @katttruewalker Okay... I’ve read two of the articles and a common statement is popping out at me... ‘5 crew’. Are they increasing crew size?

  • @entspeak

Well this & the speculation video below... starts to make me think so, or at least something is in the works.

The Pirate Lords Vessel... A Mano'War.... possibly a future addition. (towards the end of the Video, it's explained, & hence possible crew size increase).
The only thing that is for certain is they will keep us guessing for a while yet :)

    PhuzzyBond - ManoWar Speculation Video

  • Ohhh it looks like new Xbox Achievements are coming!!!

    Shacknews:

Joe: He’s also doing the Achievement names and the best one so far is Hot Tub Crime Machine which is for if you’re sick in the hot tub. Beyond that, we’re always looking at opportunities.

  • Got to say fishing looks great!
    Tall Tales looks awesome.

Can't wait for the 30th, Hurry up clock!

  • Is it strange that I almost felt a sense of pride reading some of these articles?

Congratulations to the whole team, this stuff sounds amazing and hats off to what seems to be an incredible amount of work and a job well done! Cannot wait to see how this is received by gamers!

  • @entspeak Not that we know of, do they mean 5 ships (with crews)?

  • New achievements coming then it seems...excellent news.

  • @katttruewalker I don't think they mean ships. In the Daily Star article, it states, "Crews of up to five players...", and later:

In our Tall Tales demo, for example, we had to play through a real 'Indiana Jones moment' - four of our five crew were trapped in a chamber filling with water as we frantically tried to solve a puzzle. The fifth member stood outside - able to hear what's going on, but not do anything about it.

Now, it could be that this particular writer has also attempted to climb the twin peaks of Kilimanjaro, so... maybe an error? But a weird one. Unless, they happened to have a dev member with them from the crew of another ship and were confused.

  • @entspeak That is what I assumed reading the article, there was a person from another crew with them.

  • @oneeyedheathen Yeah, well then it confused the writer, because they seemed to believe that meant you could have "Crews of up to five players." lol.

  • Apparently that new Banjo we're hearing in the world is the music for fishing!

  • @katttruewalker this month is going to be a busy month as there’s the arena coming and also game of thrones a lot to look forward to.

  • Good stuff

And this guy is going to give me nightmares for days!

Finally I can fight this guy? I hope so! This empty eyes(totaku Gold Hoarder) looking at me from the showcase everyday when I’m sitting on my couch! And I’m thinking only, you’re the next on my list you scurvy greedy sea dog :D

  • I’ve just seen some footage of the gameplay for the mega update, it looks absolutely brilliant and I can’t wait to go fishing and cook the fish. This games getting better and better each month 😃

  • Another one here from Kotaku -

Sea of Thieves' Producer Outlines a Promising Year Two Plan
The Anniversary Update is ambitious, bringing in many of the things players want. Moving forward, Neate envisions that releases will be smaller and more manageable for the team: a new story chapter here, new voyages and missions there, special cosmetics from time to time. The second year aims to round out the Sea of Thieves experience, but it will hopefully also be done in a way that’s less taxing on the team. It’s a way to make players happy and the workers behind the scene healthy. The end result will hopefully offer an experience that offers something for all kinds of players.

“There should be no reason not to fall in love with Sea of Thieves now,” Neate said.

Disappointing. Pirate Legend is the end rather than the beginning.

Captaincy is dead as I suspected.

  • One more great one here by Jack Yarwood from Fanbyte -

For my nephew and I, Sea of Thieves has become an important way of keeping in touch, as it has for many families who play the game. Between his busy social calendar of football and children’s parties and my own hectic freelance career, pencilling in some quality time has become increasingly difficult to arrange. But with the aid of Rare’s shared world adventure game, we’ve been able to hang out and create hilarious and unforgettable memories while on the seas.
