Could 3rd person view be added as an option?

  • I have a couple of friends who love the game but are unable to play any first person view games for more than a few minutes. And the realism of being on a bobbing ship in this game (which is a good thing) makes it worse for them. Recently, through playing Fortnite with them, we found out that 3rd person view lessens that effect. Not to mention being able to see your own awesome cosmetic at all times is a nice thing on its own. It is my humble opinion that such an option would open up the game to even more players.

  • Use an emote during those more wobbly moments. 😉

  • @galactic-geek Haha thanks for the advice.
But seriously though, it would really be nice. And by looking at how we can already zoom out to 3rd person perspective when using emotes, I don't think it would even be that difficult to implement the option. Of course, I'm just assuming as I don't have any knowledge in developing games.

  • With the field of view increase everyone would be forced to use 3rd person for combat

  • @libykim no way should they do this, as its an unfair advantage if someone uses it mid battle to have a peak around a corner that he would normally not be able to.

Its sad for the people that deal with seasickness from being on a ship but still thats a minority in this case and alot more people would have to deal with the unfairness of being in third person in alot of situations

  • The only way I can see them doing this, is if you can only enter third person when you're not in combat. So basically, if you get attacked, you're forced into first person again and cannot zoom out to third person until you exit combat.

Though honestly, I don't really see third person giving too much of an advantage. If anything, aiming guns becomes harder in third person, so for the slight tradeoff of being able to see more around you, losing a little gun accuracy is a fair compromise I think. It would be cool to see yourself more often than in just first person. Maybe they could add a photography mode so you can take cool pictures of your pirate by changing the camera angle, without having to emote and using print screen.

  • @libykim Mike told in an interview that playing 3rd person was on the table during the development of the game.
However they strict the game to 1st due to immersion.
But there was a tool they worked out called The Canvas design to immortalize moments lived in the seas. Using g that tool would be possible to interact with our character in 3rd person, I believe.
But we never heard of that again.

  • @libykim the developers tried out 3ed person in the initial phases and they choose to stick to first person view.

There a couple of key reasons for this, as already mentioned: immersion and the effects on combat.

It provides a different perspective, which influences how large the world feels, how quick combat is and how we as gamers bond with our characters: are we the character or do we bond to the avatar and this as an effect on the type of emotional engagement that we experience.

Rare tried out both and decided that the first person view provided the best results for what they wanted to achieve.

Now, the first time I picked up a grog chest I started to become nauseous in real life. Though over time and after some getting used to this no longer happens.

If they really enjoy the game, it can be that with some practice the effects of the rocking will not affect them as strongly. Using emotes can help, especially with rough seas and keeping a eye on the sea, steering, etc. can also help to reduce motion illness.

I hope that these tips help, but I doubt that Rare will ever change their choice in camera view, as it is a bigger design choice than one might realize.

  • I do not hope they will implement third person view as an option. In third person you have a wider field of view (Especially when zoomed out max like in WOW) I don't want to use that because it brakes my immersion but other ppl will. So in a way I am forced to use it too to keep up with the third person viewers (especially in combat) and I don't want that.

  • @libykim

    It's all about the "Immersion".
SoT is all about seeing the world with it's perils through your Pirates eyes.

  • Seems like every game is 3rd person now unless it's specifically a first person SHOOTER, but I love the first person aspect cause you feel more like the pirate during encounters, 3rd person would take away from the game play

  • I think first person makes everything feel more personal, if I die in combat it's me who's died and let the team down, I feel if it was in 3Rd person there would be abit more detachment in the game and would make threats a little less nerve wracking, also the first two weeks playing this game I got majorly sea sick constantly but I kept playing because I was playing with my Irl best mates so sort of had to otherwise I'd be out the loop at work of what went down last night 😂 wouldn't get that sort of story from third person ey 😂

  • @libykim

I remember this debate from early days on the forums and I've always wanted to see an optional third person.... it doesn't seem like we're going to get that so I'd settle for photo mode or better camera movement and a lot more emotes!
