I feel sorry for the Kraken

  • Am I the only one who feels genuine pity now for what should be the true and rightful scourge of the deeps? I mean, she has freaking fang filled mouths at the end of a dozen, ship crushing arms, but at most she's considered a nuisance.

Give Karen Weight, both metaphorically and physically. Give the girl a physical body already! Make us fear her at least as much as the over-sized shark.

    Karen?

Duuuh! That's her name! Silly pirate.

Domestic beast. Domestic name. Give her teeth back and we'll change it.

  • I actually like the idea of never seeing the body but what would be nice is encounters you actually look forward to if by defeating it it would drop a few chests it consumed or a fang you could sell or just something and that way you would actually sail the seas in search of it.

Lol no. Its the kraken. Plus why is it female?

  • Indeed.
Physical body just would be cool to see. Even if it were only a shadow in the depths.

LOL! Apparently it doesn't matter, since it's basically neutered anyway. Do you agree that she/he/it needs to be modified to be tougher? Drop loot?

    • Raise the ship into the air.
    • Throw sloops. (Attack sloops too!)
    • Snap masts.
    • Pull pirates down into the water and immediate death.
    • Show a huge beak piercing the hull below deck.
    • Leave severed tentacles as loot.

I think it should be commendations for more cosmetics like the kraken steering wheel. It's easy now but thats good how many times have we encountered it after a long fight already lol. Since THD it's def been increased on the spawn rate, we encountered it twice in a row 2 days.

  • Yeah. Encountered less often. MUCH tougher.

As a bonus. I would occasionally like to see the Kraken and the Meg fighting.

  • Since Rare is unlikely to do something time consuming, I'd suggest this simple fix that they might consider given it doesn't actually add anything to the game.

Simple fix: double the health of each tenticle, and at least tripple the rate at which they grab on to the ship.

I think this would be their prefered alteration as it shouldn't take much effort and time to change.

The thing is that the kraken (unlike the megalodon) has a low rate of hull breaches/minute. It's the only thing that truly would make it a true threat. Also, this would have a side effect of making it harder to simply escape the kraken (as most folks are doing rn).

Better fix: make the same modifications as the simple fix, but make the kraken violently rock the ship when grasping it. When someone is sucked into a tenticle, they are held up for no more than maybe 15-20 seconds before it plunges you into it's mouth (insta-death, no drowning). Then when the kraken is defeated, it barfs up shipwrecked loot along with high level merchant goods (such as exquisite spices).

This would not only encourage players to fight instead of run, but it would also make the battle more cinematic.

Unfortunately, not even this would satisfy everyone, so there is the ultimate fix which Rare is highly unlikely to do.

Best fix: do all the above changes, but give the kraken a body and some ability to chase a ship (since we've seen how fast the kraken is when it flees).
Though I'd love to see a kraken body, it would require Rare to completely rework the mechanics of how the tenticle work. This may be labor intensive for what it's worth, so I don't see it as something they'd consider.

But hey, that's why we're here. So they may find some inspiration from our comments, and know what we truly would like to see.

  • Has anyone sailed another ship in to help a galleon being attacked by the Kraken? Does it attack the new ship too?

I've lobbed cannon shots from afar, but never sailed close.

    Just curious.

  • Rare would be remiss not to attempt to modify the Kraken sometime in the future. As it stands now, the consensus in the community is that the beast is simply too underwhelming. As AllAmerican 440 pointed out, the Kraken needs to be buffed to a point where it is a legitimate threat to even well organized Galleon crews. It needs to be feared.

  • @captain-arcanic I am definately gonna be calling it Karen from now on hahaha!

it does, We did this with a sloop not thinking it would grab us way early game. It did.

  • My theory is that ships look like male Krakens from below, and Karen's just lonely. When she realizes her mistake, she gets frustrated. Yet another reason to feel sorry for her. Poor Karen.

  • Somehow my crew and I see Karen every single day. If a day goes by that we don’t see her, we feel sad. If people want her to be buffed into being way stronger, the frequency of encounters would probably need to drop quite a bit.

  • Just saying, if you go to that ShipWreck Bay and find the ship there, you'd realize that the Kraken likely wasn't always a beast, more so that it is likely a man. A recent youtuber decided to look into the island lore and found that Blackwyche (name of the ship there) is also a former game worked on by two of the founders of Rare. Aboard the wreck you can find a picture of the captain, Sir Arthur Pendragon, the main protagonist of the game. In it he faces his crew aboard his galleon who have turned into monsters after reading a cursed book that turns an individual into the monster they were viewing in the book. If you look around you will find a very specific open book with a picture of the kraken there. Chances are that the kraken we face is none other than Sir Arthur Pendragon himself.

The reason as to why he only attacks galleons is because he is trying to seek his old crew, not because he is some lonely female kraken.

Now with all that being said and done,I too agree that they need to flesh him out a bit more with a proper body than just the tentacles. Perhaps if the players do not act quick enough it can attempt to break apart the ship like the kraken of POTC, given it already will wrap around the ship.

  • @captain-arcanic
Yeah, I definitely think the Kraken should be the ultimate legendary creature in the game.

I hope they have an update that gives the Kraken a body, removes the mouths from the tentacles and make it overall more challenging. It would be cool if the tentacles could stab holes into the ship, and occasionally wrap the ship with its tentacles so it could bring its body up to the ship to bite holes in it.

With the update, they should release Kraken exclusive cosmetics like they did with the HD and give it its own mini campaign.
