A player said they confirmed adding more ships types in the next week in an update, and posted the pic from here with the junk and man o war in it.. did the developers confirm this somewhere, or is he just blowing smoke?

Are you insane? You'll be lucky if they allow you to hunt a different type of animal for the Merchant Alliance in 12 months.
@gareeet A user made a pretty good thread with different ship types he would like to see added to the game. However none have been confirmed by Rare to being added to the game or being worked on.

That's what I figured, but he said another developer update or tweet said it was new content in this coming weeks content.
I told him I thought that was sadly speculation, but he was insistent it was true.
Ask for a link ;) I'm 99,9999999% sure it was false information.
The only thing we know for sure unless Rare breaks silence.
Is that they have nothing at all for atleast 3 months.Only thing we will see before is microtransactions\ pets to add on the $60 Milk-$$-Milk-$$-Milk-$$.
And we all know content updates are delayd so come July August we should atleast get the legendary ship they promised.
Hopefully the game wont be dead by then and only have the hardcore fanboys left.

Rare has confirmed a new ship type, but only for Legendary Pirate players and only when the Legendary Captain content is added in the first major update a few months from now. Nothing else is known.
I think that's just getting your own personal Galleon and/or Sloop when you hit Captain status; I heard you also get your own personal hideout, but I'm pretty sure most of it is speculation at this point.
One thing is for certain, you will get your own personal ship that you can customize yourself and solely by yourself when you become a Captain, as opposed to ships being shared with the crew and voting on what cosmetics will adorn the vessel.
