Skeletal fort "griefers" (rant)

    It blows my mind how many people on this forum throw the word "griefer" around, it seems when ever someone attacks some one else they are considered a "griefer". Personally I think most of the actual griefing in this game has been rooted out by them updating the respawn system in the last beta.

    Now for the part about skeleton forts. I have seen a few threads now where people say others are "camping" skeleton forts. "when ever I come close to a skeleton fort there is a whole crew just sitting in their galleon on the cannons waiting" Uhhhhh....? duh?
    I did a good amount of skeleton forts this weekend with my friends, we would have 3 people in the fort 1 on guard duty and whenever someone died to skeletons we would swap out.

    When a ship seemed to be coming within our zone the guard would tell the rest to stop what they are doing and return to the ship and prepare for a battle (we are not sharing that loot with anyone especially given there was only 1 really good chest among the loot most of the time) how is this at all griefing or camping.

    Inb4 people say "well I looked through my telescope and saw that they weren't doing the fort at all and were just camping the fort so others couldn't do it just for the sake of griefing" Lolwut? If you are within range that you can see the other people with your telescope, you are within range for my team to be in the ship already to be prepared for battle, so yes obviously they would be on the ship and not doing the fort.

    So in conclusion, i'm really not sure why the word griefer is thrown around so loosely on these forums.

    1. Stealing others loot is NOT griefing
    2. Spawn killing while they board your ship to take your loot is NOT griefing (if you can't come back from spawn killing that's on you and you can just scuttle your ship)
    3. Defending a skeleton fort is NOT griefing
    4. Camping an outpost is NOT griefing (if you fall for this, it's your fault for not scouting ahead in the first place)
    5. Attacking a sloop while you are on a galleon is NOT griefing

    This is a pirate game and stealing is going to happen, if you don't use the tools at your disposal to defend yourself and prepare for attacks from others THATS ON YOU.

    Yes, people have to start realising that this is a pirate game, and what u are supposed to do is:

    1. Be a pirate
    2. Deal with other pirates

    @mri1ama thank you for outlining the issue, hopefully the complainers see the light. i love the spyglass argument they use, not stopping to realize that the people 'camping' the fort can see them too.

    HAHAHAHA Ye want to hear me true "griefer" story ?

    Be me, be a cap alone on a Galleon for me crew has abandoned me.
    Worked me way up to an active Skelly Fort.
    Was battling the skellies on me own, doing good and all ... Then this other Galleon in on the horizon. Heading me way.
    So I do what I usually do: get out me lantern, and flashes at them.
    They flash back, so I go back killing bones!
    They arrive and start firing at me ship right away. They were poor sailors and had worse aim. They tried boarding me ship several times unsuccessfully. AYE for I wouldn't let them. Being alone it was arguably hard to sink them for they would repair like crazy ants working together.
    Anyhow, they were all about just sinking me, and killing me. They managed to kill me once or twice. Upon me second death, me Galleon had sank.
    So I sank them using two GP barrels from the island that I had saved up, but died in the process.

    Sail back, alone, on me ship, have to redo the approach and all. I believe that I did sink these lads since their boat had gone.
    I was maneuvering me ship when suddenly a bunch of new lads joined me crew! First thing they say te me is: drop the F anchor and do not raise the sails!
    So I merely replied: Are ye the capt'n ? No! AYE be capt'n, so don't tell me what to do on my ship you scally wag!
    The guy started telling his friends to put me in the brig. So without a moments hesitation, I grab me gun powder barrels and stack one of them close by the brig, and one floating by the ship.
    Understand me view me lads: I had worked and fought too hard up until now to be challenged by a mere new guy. I told him me truth and hoped he would find me way of talking funny and respect me work. For if he just got in and found himself with a nit re spawn to fight the skellies and claim the treasures was ALL ME!
    Furthermore this guy was not friendly, using curse words and he actually managed to release me darkest parts!

    So the first time AYE dared him to challenge me more, for AYE be crazy!
    Blew this lad and meself up with a gunpowder barrel! As Captain I shall not accept any mutiny!
    His mates seemed more friendly but still would take his side. I understand very well, but this means that ye will share the consequences!
    Waited for the waves to be cleared while asking of the crew to apologies and comply with me. They did not and actually condescendingly told me that I was being too serious about me effort for I merely sailed a galleon and parked it.

    Well, once the treasure door opened, and me crew was distracted, I took a GP barrel and sank me own Golly Molly! I shall not have her in the hands of such pirates.

    Yeah, for these guys deserved it! I wasn't the most friendly pirate, but these guys did not care at all. Or at least that's what they said. They were soooooo mad when they realized they couldn't take the treasure. The best thing is since they weren't on the ship approaching the island, they did not know the name. And also since they never checked on the map they couldn't come back. Unless they were indeed knowledgeable enough to know their whereabouts. Well no massive skull head in the sky is for sure!

    I do believe that a life of crime cannot be redeemed by a few good deeds. But the contrary is also correct, at least for pirates: A life of good deeds cannot be overshadowed by a few crimes.
    I am generally a nice guy. But if you do cross me hard enough, I will do everything in my power with the tools given to me, to get to you. And once I do, neither of us will be in a good place. I am the kind of crazy you don't wanna mess with, but I'm also the kind of l***y person which will show you a great time.
    I was griefing, they were griefing, everyone was griefing and you know what ? It doesn't even matter lol Cause the fun I had even dealing with my own crew was very precious. And I am sure they won't forget the day they crossed me, hope it will haunt them the next time they want to openly go against the captain's will.
    Are we happier ? I don't think so. Am I letting this affect me ? Obviously or I wouldn't post about it. Do I need Rare to do something about it ? Absolutely not!

    For those of you who might see me as a very bad or unstable person: I am! My actions speak for themselves. But remember that the only true thing I took away from them in terms of gaming content/effort, is merely the time they spent on my ship and fighting the final 3 waves of skellies.
    And finally: the treasure was mine to dispose of as I saw fit! I had the best claim to it with me 2 hours of efforts and I was captain! If you think I was never prayed upon, read me posts. Happened a few times to me, no salt here.

    So you think other crews are giving you a bad time, what about your own crew member ? xD

    @ironuzuka that was a good read thanks for that. Yes I completely forgot about matchmaking griefing with your own crew. I haven't experienced this because I always either solo or with my wife or with a full crew of friends so if we brig each other it's all in good fun.
    But yeah I don't see griefing in a PvP scenario anymore it's pretty much all just part of the game now. The whole spawn camping and infinite mermaid spawning they had before was the only PvP griefing I ever noticed in this game that could be called as such. But crewmate griefing is it's own beast entirely lol.

    exactly... this is a PIRATE GAME.... most pirates were not nice people.. PIRATES WERE THE ORIGINAL GRIEFERS. people are complaining that we are being pirates.....

    Agree with the OP. Part of being good at this game is knowing your surroundings. The tools are in the game to play however you want. If you are not paying attention to what is going on around you, you will probably get killed by another player. I only lost one chest in beta and that was because I got careless.

    Blunt but I completely agree.

    Did the exact same thing you did to farm the forts, and I'm glad that my crew did! First Fort we did we saw a galleon sink a sloop there, so we sunk the galleon and proceeded to do the Fort. The galleon came back not once, not twice, but three times to sink us! They failed every time ;P

    We then went to an outpost and saw their ship sailing away from it. Instead of rushing in with the stronghold chest to sell it, we said "two of us are gonna scout real quick, wait on the ship". Guess what? Their entire crew was camping the gold hoarder. Needless to say they all died, their ship now sailing off the map, and my crew had a great time with our first skeleton Fort.

    It's all about the communication I find in this game. Even a skillful player will have a tough time if his crew is dysfunctional and the enemy is working like a well-oiled machine.

    As for griefing, the only griefers I consider in this game are players that abuse the proximity chat to yell slurs at other crews. I've had it happen multiple times, couldn't care one way or another myself, but my crewmate's son plays this game with me sometimes and I don't want him to hear the enemy start cussing like sailors. Hopefully there will be some sort of option to mute enemy crews, maybe a player list so you can specifically ignore certain players.

For instance, those that abuse the brig (Which will most likely be fixed) and people who betray their own crew and deny everyone the loot they worked 3 hours for, then logging off. Spawn camping IS griefing, even though there's a workaround, and so is killing a guy realizing he has no loot, and killing him over and over again. If he doesn't escape. Regardless of the ability to scuttle, the murderer is being toxic, and therefore griefing.

    In SoT spawn killing is technically not griefing, you have an exit option...neither is killing it skimming treasure-less pirates.

    Slurs, name calling, and bullying (primarily via those ways) are.

    Again...SoT is a unique game that can be frustrating and confusing for gamers because several mechanics would be labeled as broken or griefing when in reality they are working as intended.

    If a specific player does not likensaid mechanic they should not play the game rather then try to change it.

    Totally. Any, any time we dropped anchor we had someone on guard duty. As soon as another ship turned our way it was immediately to battle stations.

    Sure, that's just playing the game.

    Not accusing you of such, yet defending the fort against other players while hollering personal insults at those other players, however, is World Class griefing.

    Shouldn't have been shocked when it happened, but it did.

    @drayman86 @WeAreLegion @Gholin @Elite-Assasin87 I wouldn't call verbal abuse griefing, griefing is the act of using a construct in the game to cause annoyance to other players IE: dropping the anchor at bad times on purpose for your own crew. Verbal abuse is just toxicity and poor sportsmanship. I mean I do like a little bit of banter between rivals, but when it gets to the extent of racials slurs and bigotry that is just childish.

    Griefing is the act of irritating and angering people in video games through the use of destruction, construction, or social engineering.

    I’n my opinion outpost should be safe areas. I get that u should scout ahead and make sure people are not there but that’s also a place to grab voyages buy better gear and ship upgrades. I don’t want people messing with me while I’m doing these things. Plus u should get loot the right way and take them on out in the sea.

    If you kill a guy and he keeps spawing next to you then its up to him to kill you or stop spawing. Why do i have to suddenly let him live? So he can run up and shoot me? Run to my ship and blow it up?

If you kill a guy who has no treasure, and then he respawns and runs away and you kill him again, and then he respawns and runs away and you kill him again. THAT is what I'm talking about. The guy clearly isn't up to fighting you. And you are griefing him.

    People keep saying they want the thrill of the fight... But what's so thrilling about continually killing a person who has no interest in fighting? It's not a fight or a story to tell really.

    You know what griefing is? Not sticking to the code. PvP and steal, and all that, but know when to quit after the other person has surrendered completely, eh? Don't do stuff to others you wouldn't want done to you.

    And don't you dare say you want to be ganged up on by 4 people and killed over and over and over again for 15 to 20 minutes without a chance to fight back at a certain point. If you think that's fun, I fear for your sanity.

    Second if a guy has no treasure no anything and someone killed him AND CLEARLY IS STANDING IN THAT AREA how is it suddenly the winners fault for being better?
    They had to change the mermaid spawn after ships sank because of guys like you.
    What you could do and should do if someone is killing you and as you said you have nothing YOU should scuttle and respawn a whole 50 feet away and get over the fact that you lost.
    But instead it sounds like youe real story is you got killed, got mad respawn to kill the guy he killed you again and you kept doibg it.
    Tell me how its the winners job to retreat to the loser? And dont be hysterical.
    Edit...im not a idio like some people, if someone kills me 15 times ill respawn elsewhere. ..well i wont let it get that far.
