Another bad solo experience, no point having it in the game

  • I know you keep saying "play with a group", but the solo option is there and sometimes we like to play alone and not have a bunch of idiots messing up out game. I just came back to port and found a ship there, they immediately killed me without saying a word other than laughing right afterwards. I respawned and they were on my ship and killed me again. When I respawned I found that they set me ship to sail away from port so I was already away from them. I finally just exited the game at that point since the experience in solo just is not fun when running across other people. Sure there can be good people out there too, but take a look online at all the people posting how much fun they are having with a group of 4 taking out solo players. There should be either a single player option, or one were you do not run into ships that have more or less players than the one that you are on (solo only sees solo ships, 4 player only sees 4 player ships). There is no point in me playing solo if the bad players are going to ruin it for us and we have no chance. I'm only having fun when there is nobody else around, when others are around I am not having fun with this game.

  • Definitely becoming "Sea of Griefers" seeing this topic pop up at a higher frequency.

would love a round table discussion about this from RARE.

  • I knew this would be an issue the second I heard about the game. Just look at GTAO and how bad it is. The ONLY reason that game still survives is because of it's name. But you can't find a single lobby that isn't full of people trying to gun you down.

I get the point of this game is you're a pirate and you face other pirates. Without the risk, the game would be far to easy. But unfortunately these types of games just don't work. Because there are far too many people out there who simply like to attack everybody and try to ruin others experience. It's not about fighting over treasure. It's about making the other person so annoyed, they quit. And they will keep playing and annoying you until mommy calls them up for dinner.

  • Well , like I said in another post , this community is already more toxic than WOW and its just a Beta!
So , you and I r gonna spend our hard money elsewhere and let trolls take over this bathtub ganking game! lol

  • You are complaining not about a flaw or bug in the game but about what the game is. It involves pvp, that's what it is. You are complaining about something so inignificant. You approached a larger pirate vessel with chests onboard and they took them from you. This is exactly how the game is supposed to be. The separate solo server is not an entirely bad idea, but that is down to the devs and what they want their game to be. They certaintly shouldn't prevent solo players from playing with larger crews.

You can also use these very forums to find people to sail with so you don't hav to suffer the reprebates out there.

  • @inbred-chimera said in Another bad solo experience, no point having it in the game:

This is exactly how the game is supposed to be.

No it was not. I really don't know where you read that, but the original idea was far different.

  • @inbred-chimera to be fair, there are quite a lot of people abusing the respawn camps and constantly attacking just to attack. There are also way more trolls in this test. I lost count of how many 1-2 person crews have joined a friend and I mid-voyage only to throw our chests overboard, steal supplies, detonate gunpowder and just log out afterwards. 1 in every 5 matchmaking at least.

  • @shadowstrider-7 c****t, it does sound bad. Is this test free to play because that will be a big factor.. or does it require a pre order?

  • @inbred-chimera It's Founder, Xbox Insider and preorders only. Even still, it goes to show the type of behavior we can expect at launch. The community I have run into this weekend feels exactly like that of a F2P game, or GTA:O.

  • I love soloing.

  • I feel like a lot of people are calling pirating griefing. In a sloop alone I was able to take out 2 galleons in one game alone, 1 I sunk the other I drug through a storm. If you are playing alone and went to port thinking that in a pirate game you would be safe with another ship there you were wrong. You can have fun playing solo just got to be cautious. The community is pretty helpful and friendly and I think you can find some people here to play with who won't troll you. I hope though you have a better solo experience the next time you set sail. Just trying to give another perspective on solo play is all.

  • In my 100+ hours of game time I have never experienced this. I never had a spawn camper at an outpost.

Maybe this is caused because this test is free to play. I think trollers won't pay for Sea of Thieves.

  • I've been having an absolute blast playing solo. It's all that I play. If you don't want to fight, then you're going to have to do more investigating than just going to the nearest outpost to turn in treasures. If you don't see a ship there, you better be looking for a mermaid to make sure nobody is camping. If you're exploring the seas and don't want any battles, you have to keep a constant eye on the horizon. When you are being chased, use good tactics and you'll get away just fine.

The game is tough solo but definitely possible. I enjoy the way that it is right now, except for the respawn mechanics.

  • It is a difficult issue to be sure. But it is hard to judge game trends on posts alone. A vast majority of the players probably don't even know that the forums exist. So you have a portion of the minority that are experiencing griefing and actually posting about it. Prevalence in forum posts doesn't necessarily correlate with the average experience in game. Lots of noise involved.

I think there is a bit of an issue with education and missing systems. A bounty system of some kind would be nice for these situations. Within a certain threshold of spawnkilling, since some do it to grab what they want from the ship uncontested, a big "HERE BE GRIEFERS!" broadcast to the entire map would be nice. It would be persistent until the crew has been eliminated entirely and the ship sunk.

As far as education goes, not a lot of people are aware of the scuttle option. You go into the menu and scuttle your ship. Perfect for when your ship gets stolen or you are getting spawn camped. Also some players may not know you don't score points of any kind for killing another player. Whether that gets implemented later on remains to be seen.

  • @sir-fortesque Good post. I think playing solo is a great challenge, as it should be. Being good at playing solo will take practice. The game doesn't need to change to cater to solo players.

  • I don't know, I've been having a lot of fun playing solo. Maybe I've just been lucky to not encounter any real griefing. Don't get me wrong, I've been sunk, killed and chased quite a bit, but nothing really outside of regular gameplay.

I've lost a few chests, but I still cash in most of them, so that's no big deal. Then again, I've made the decision not to fight other pirates, even when attacked, so getting killed is more an inevitability than anything else. As a result, getting killed doesn't really bother me much anymore.

  • @gulpee-rex you can also tell if people are camping an out post it is impossible for them to be there with no evidence

  • I was outside and I saw this dog in a yard. I went up to the dog, reached my hand out to pet it, it bit me, and I'm never going outside again. Outside is the worst place ever! It's completely filled biting dogs!!

  • The only real problem is the way you spawn.... other than that it's just crying about dying in PvP.

Spawning exactly where you died is asking for spawn camping.

  • Before starting a session on a galleon, I'll 'look for group'. Find some likeminded folks with mics and start with a full crew. This way grievers can't spawn in.
When we spot another ship (galleon or sloop), we vote whether to attack. If we attack, we'll try to sink the ship once and then try to establish a friendly communication. Maybe recruit a solo victim to our crew.
I find this a good way of playing a pirate game.
One time, a solo pirate stealthily took revenge by sneaking a gunpowder barrel to our ship and detonating it, killing two of our crew and sinking the ship. Well played, all in good fun.

  • @felid0r to add to your point a mermaid can bee seen from pretty far away as there light gives off a plume of light blueish smoke, something to point out as everybody may not know what to look for. I have had a blast playing solo and I am surprised as to how effective you can be, even against crews of 4.

  • Microagression, google it.

  • The griefing from my experience wasnt this bad in the actual closed beta, which leads me to believe that people are just having fun enjoying pvp for a weekend.

They have nothing to lose, all their treasure is pretty much pointless beyond the guns they bought, so why not practice the fighting aspects?

Once people are in the final game, they will spend their time trying to earn the reputations and griefing should go down. However, like others have said, proceed with caution around outposts and scuttle your ship if you have to. Youve already been plundered, so losing the ship means nothing. Just logged in? Same principle, you just get a new start island

Ahaha! Just! I'm usually terrible at MMO and social games, but in SOT I'm meeting lots of people, forming alliances and adding new friends afterwards. Even playing solo, it's easy being vigilant and coming back for sweet revenge. I think you really can't take the game too seriously. I joined a crew earlier and did loads and now I'm confident we'll find more. I was solo when they invited me aboard the galleon and we had an awesome time. When more people are playing the game, I think you'll get more help from nicer pirates. Just have fun, speak to people and make friends.

  • Solo is the hard mode of SoT. It's not meant to be a thing to do when you wanna chill alone. I play solo all the time and have plenty of fun. If you're being griefed, DC and search again. It's as easy as that.

  • I play solo and what i normally do is when at a outpost ill take the chest off my boat and hide it on the island then head into the town scouting it out before going back to turn my chest in... I've had one interaction where i found someone camping the outpost was able to kill him and turn in my chest..

it was a little time consuming but when your solo you have to take every precaution

  • @scheefinator lol the last post got lost because devs said no safezones

  • I can't wait until rare takes all the money people who love the game spent on it, and use it to invest in safe zones and vrchat style social activities, so that the people who want this, realize the pve in this game is NOTHING without the pvp interaction, and get bored and quit.

And yea, make sure they spend alot of the time on the new solo player experience, since these illiterate people who can't read the "FOR EXPERIENCED PLAYERS ONLY" warning on the solo ship option. Then start demanding safe zones and gameplay changes because they can't simply accept that solo play ins't what the game is designed for, and that it isn't a good way to learn or get a feel of the game.

But no, keep being complete idiots and demanding stuff to ruin a pretty damn good game, because you don't want to learn to play, and keep insisting on some solo ship game, that isn't this damn game!

  • This topic is a joke i've been making the last few days, a dark sad joke.

Rare specifically and clearly advises new players to not play solo. They have stated that solo play isn't something that was even really considered in the game design, it was just thrown in as an extra option for more experienced pirates to mess around with, knowing that it wasn't intended to be fair and balanced.

But because people seem to be unable to understand the words "experienced players only" they choose that to learn the game, then come on here and complain and bash because their experience in solo, alot of these people have never even tried 2 or 4 man sailing, but they come on the forums, bash the game and everyone who plays it.

It would not be surprising to see Rare completely remove solo sailing options, just because of these stupid people. Experienced pirates can't have fun playing around as an extremely diffcult solo pirate, because new players can't read simple warnings.

  • pvp will be high because atm its that or get treasure which doesnt provide any real reward (currently) so its easier to get instant gratification hunting other players. Add on to the fact that pvp with ships is incredibly new to a whole bunch of people thus they want to experience it. Until theres a purpose which currently there isnt because its a stress test, its not unexpected for this to be happening.

Getting caught out by campers at an outpost is something that you should only let happen to you once, if at all, theres obvious signs to avoid said outpost - Their ship for one, better still a mermaid if no ship is to be seen. Got a ship pretty damn close to you? Also dont stop at that outpost unless youre positive you can unload and leave quickly.

Solo is a mode that even has the best of pioneers watching their backs. there is nothing and there will never be anything "fair" about solo play on a sloop hence the warning upon selection. You keep that in mind its completely playable you just play cautiously. A sloop can best a galleon but it wont happen in a new players hands unless that galleon has an awful crew. Solo play in SoT is the highest difficulty essentially.

  • @kruqnut
Well my experience has not been very good I love the game but it is true many people are killing without any reason it's okay to be pirates but to arrive and kill and kill yesterday they killed me like 4 times in a row I appeared and they killed me apart I was playing alone in a boat boy they shot me and they did not get tired of shooting and they just laughed and I did not have treasures and nothing left me alone after I was dead for 4 times and my sunken ship went to my boat boy again and I could just play quietly I find it ok to play or to fight for treasures but not to kill because if and also 4 against one is unfair if for that they have the option to speak by voice I do not know but there are very heavy people besides the other experience that I was already a sailor a ship was helping to load the guns and a guy came and locked me down in prison for no reason and I left while they laugh and they did not take me out and they did not let me play it's supposed to be a closed beta and one enters to try the game and report bugs or problems and others to help make it better but as I do not know how heavy people are young children or do not know how to think like there are people who speak Spanish and are kinder than others I do not know but they could do something with that theme have the option to change the language to the taste of a Spanish English since I do not speak English very well and everyone is only in English but friends of this great community is fine that is pvp but do not go killing by kill let them play if they want to kill themselves, but first, as they say, if you shoot them, they shoot but if they do not, or if they go with a bad intention, they can kill each other but not for fun

Wow you really do have strong feelings about this, strong and constant feelings aboutthis, strong constant and disrespectful feelings about this. Chilll dude other people are allowed their say.

  • @shaggiedo i'm 34 years old, been gaming since atari, I've seen plenty of games ruined by the complaints of a loud whiny minority. Trying to avoid it here.

  • @King-Ron "I played on hardmode but I wasn't good enough and I didn't have the awareness so please lower the difficulty and/or give me safe zones, PvE servers and an invincibility buff or I'll not get the game! Did you hear me, Rare!? I'll not get the game!"

People like you are funny, seriously. You guys are the first that will jump the ship, if you get what you're demanding.
I hope Rare stays true to themselves and realize that they can't please everyone, and they shouldn't or else this game will go down the gutter like every other former great franchise that listened to this crowd of pampered casuals and betrayed their core audience that played the game how it was designed.

    Rant over.
