You could see the name of the island by aiming a spyglass towards it.

  • It would be really cool and good for beginners if you aimed a spyglass at an island it would show the islands name like aiming towards ship. I i see this as a way to make the game a little bit more beginner friendly. Also it would benefit people like me who don't have any inner compass.

This might clash with the spotting a (captained) ship.

  • I would not support that, but a beginner mission or Tale that also serves as a tutorial on map reading and navigation would be cool.

  • Map already does this.

  • goes down to the mid deck…oh look, a map ;)

  • Don't you have to play a tutorial voyage in the open world that teaches you how to use the map to find the island you need to go to in order to dig up treasure?

    ...

You have done the tutorial voyage, right?

Beginners? I've been playing the game for years and think this is a great idea. So simple, so elegant, so thematic. Buy this pirate a grog!

  • I like the idea but from my personal experience the consistency has gone down with it working on what we already have

I get servers where it doesn't work at all and ones where I get the noise but never the banner.

So, I'd appreciate it consistently working before adding onto it but I support it in general.

Really? Not the maiden voyage right, where do you pick that up?

All new accounts automatically wake up to the Mysterious Stranger introducing himself and the livelihood of the seas, with several pop ups directing you to take a voyage from the Gold Hoarders, propose the voyage on your quest/captain's table, sail to the nearest small island from the outpost, dig up the treasure (with no skeletons popping up after digging it), sail back to the outpost right next to you, and turn the treasure in, which actually completes the quest (exclusively done in the tutorial voyage to teach you how you should handle basic treasure hunting).

  • Why we dont have big green letters above the island and if you have a quest a green big marker would appear instead? ^^

Ship controls would also be changed to W,A,S,D

On the serious note, I don't think anyone at any stage of their journey of sea of thieves ever needed such addition. Finding 'Fools lagoon' or some small island with dig spots certainly takes time for new players. I think being able to ask NPC who sold the quest for general direction would be enough.

  • @nex-stargaze Hmm I guess I did that and don't remember, I usually do follow the new player instructions.

  • They could add this and even make things intuitive.

They could make it so that holding the primary input to use the spyglass works as almost a "shift key"...while you're holding RT/M1, if you tap LT/M2, that will pop the island or ship captain information that you're pointed at.

  • It just makes sense.

  • Tbh. If u could turn it on off like slimline banners. Interesting, because some times I'm swimming for 5 hours and I'm usually on a rowboat and have no clue where I am 🤔

  • I understand why you'd want this, personally I wouldn't as I've invested enough time into game that I know most of larger islands and rough directions so can navigate without map so it'd be another thing making game easier and negating experience.

FYI you can look at a map through the back balcony on a sloop so you don't need to run all the way down. There is also a great sot companion app by rare thief which has good interactive map that you can select diff filters to help depending what you're doing.

  • I get the thinking behind this but also, it takes away from navigation skills, looking at your map, looking at compass headings and figuring it out. I'm all for helping new players but the game should come with some form of difficulty. If this was a thing, it'd need to be optional under its own separate banner settings, I use the spyglass a lot for viewing ships and looking for seagulls etc, I skim alot of islands and I don't really want banners constantly flashing up at me.

  • I hope that one day the name of the island will only be displayed through the spyglass, cuz I'm tired of the island name obscuring the health bar during pvp

You can change where the island banners appear: Settings - Hud - Banners - choose Slimline (have them at the top of the screen); you can even turn them off at the same setting.

  • @wolfmanbush

I have that "noise but no banner" issue often for islands and basically everything else. Even checked my setting to see if I turned banner overlays off.
