Tortuga like island and settling/occupation of islands..

  • Couple of ideas.. I keep imagining how cool it would be if there was an island like a big neutral trading post or where pirates just can gather and hang out without fighting.. A bit like the famous pirate island Tortuga. I think it would be a fun social addition to the game.
Also, it would be amazing if you were able to settle on an island and maybe stash some treasure in a hut or a small building.. Maybe build it yourself by gathering wood, cutting down palm trees? If you also could fortify to some degree that would make for really fun battle situations defending your island.

  • Not a fan of this idea. First of all, no neutral areas in the game. Secondly that would take 90% of the ships away from the seas as they would just wander around that post.

Building a settlement on the island would have the same effect basically. Crews guarding those marauders chests there without doing anything. But this idea does have some merit. Building a hideout for your pirate where you set sail when logging in would be interesting. You could spend gold to customize it and add skins and then sail into the world through portal. But that's it, you couldn't hide loot or anything there. Just a spawn in location basically and a gold sink.

  • As neat as this would be, the server populations are too low to make this worth investing in. Our current crew count is 5/6 and the map is massive, you would be lucky to get two crews there at the same time. If the population was massive, maybe. However, crews are in short supply as is, why make them even extra scarce?

Side note, building really has no place within this game. There is no server longevity, so you waste time building something only for it to be destroyed as soon as you leave. Had this game been like ARC, Rust, or even Icarus, you may have an argument. However, players don't come to Sea of Thieves to play building manager, they come for the Piracy and Adventure.

  • Wasn't there always a brawl going on in the Tortuga tavern?

  • i would be down with changing the sea dog tavern into a game building type place…you cam go there and play cards, dice, darts etc to try and get more gold, ancient coin, etc you would not be allowed to fight as well. as it is now its just a building in adventure mode with no purpose. its perfect since its near the middle of the map as well. the way i see it, its another thing you can do in adventure mode which is what we need…more stuff to do

  • gather and hang out without fighting

    Ferry of the damned.

  • @bojjne

With six ships per server and a maximum 16 players this would not work very well, you hardly see anybody on the seas as it is, plus you would need to construct a new building every session because potentially thousands of players would have a building in the same place as you.. Maybe in a different game?

  • @nextgenjayp

Okay, but I guess there would be lots of neutral areas given the fact that the map is pretty big and there are not too many players per server. Similar to the concept of forts. I hear ya about the guarding thing.. But I suggest that would be up to the player to choose if they want to defend och hunt for more treasure. It's not like you would be bound to stay on that island. Maybe the player can have a key to the settlement, so if another player manages to send u to the ferry u loose the key?

  • @madfrito99 Like the ideas! Maybe game of chess, knife throwing too? :)

Don't really follow, how would thousands of players have a building in the same place? The buildings or settlements would have to be built each session of course. I was not imagining big buildings that take lot's of time to set up. Did not know about the 6 ships per server, thanks for enlightening me. Perhaps they should increase that number. But I almost always seem to come across people trying to steal my stuff.. :)

You're saying u want tavern hand to hand combat? :)

I guess it's a bit same with the forts then. If there is treasure, they will come. And not too far off with the new addition of buried treasures. If they would increase the player count or ship count I think we would see a lot of fun action and situations.
I did not think in terms of time consuming building management..Almost goes without saying. That would have no place in the game.

Either 'Tortuga' would have to be able to accomodate thousands of simultaneous players from all of the individual servers on one central server which is not do-able (and would kill the actual game off anyway even if it was) or each server would have to have its own 'Tortuga' in which case somebody or many somebody's could have built in exactly the same place as you when you join a new server or get merged. Crews also change from session to session further complicating things. Think about it for a moment..

  • @bojjne I was meaning it that Tortuga was hardly a safe zone in the films. Nearly everytime its featured there was brawls, gunshots and fights going off. No place in SoT should be a safe zone apart from the instanced areas in the SotD. You'll never get the right feel either with the number of crews you can meet. Best you can hope for is to actually communicate with some other crews and try and share a grog or two in a tavern, it is possible, I've done it a few times.

  • Right, let's keep survival and base building mechanics out of my ARPG's thank you.

  • Just have NPC Pirates you could fight against in a bare-knuckle brawl - as you beat each 1, they'll reward you (with titles and belts) and send you to the next, much tougher, opponent. It would be a great way to improve the Sea Dogs in Adventure through a TT. Perhaps it would start by introducing bare-knuckle brawling, as a new mechanic, and then upgrade with different styles of fighting (with weapons and then ships) as you go up the tiers? The final encounter could even end hilariously with an intense multi-round bout of rock, paper, scissors (and introduce the associated emotes for free) against Demarco. 😅

  • Something here is what a lot of players wanted...Yes since SOT is basically a "Skin" based game to me it would be nice to have a "Tortuga" approach to show off your creations, have a drink with others, and have a duel with another opponent on an "agreed" dual click. Other situations should be implemented also like treasure quest share and Map share. (Similar to the map boards now) Making friends in SOT is rare...really. I honestly liked the Arena waiting areas where you could check out other players and have a good time...sometimes salty, but that is part of the Pirate life now isn't it. A Tortuga approach would have to be several separate servers I'm aware of so it could be filled with curious individuals who may want to chill during gameplay, have a Grog, dual, and see others. Again this is a long-running idea that too many would be a fun and expressive change.
