I can't for the life of me think why people are forever mentioning mortgages on this forum.
EDIT: If you want quick and easy HC rep then start going to shipwrecks, you will usually find a lot of pre cooked food there
It’s not like every fish is three reels...some are one, some are two, some are five or more.
How about just don’t cook fish while you’re fishing, that’s so dumb. How did you think that would go any other way than burning the fish? And the reel times aren’t all 3 min they vary I’ve seen fish reeled caught 45 seconds after cast so you complaining about the reel times is a cop out. Just play the damn game and adapt to how it works stop complaining that the devs need to change the game every time you people run into the slightest difficulty or inconvenience, it’s ridiculous.
Your problem seems to be your lack of proper bait and conditions. Looking at the description of the bait in your inventory/in barrels or in the Hunter's Call commendations will tell you what need what bait. Splashtails don't need bait, and will pop up anywhere, and probably a quarter of the fish you get may be splashtails. Others have different conditions they need:
Battlegills can only be found near active strongholds, skeleton fleets, and skeleton ships.
Wreckers can only be found near shipwrecks.
Stormfish can only be found in a storm, and only when in specific regions of the map in the storm.
Pondies can only be found in freshwater ponds on islands (some saltwater ponds, such as the Mermaid's Hideaway pond, work too for some reason).
Splashtails will become the bane of your existence can be found everywhere, and do not require bait.
Wildsplashes can only be found in the Wilds.
Plentifins can only be found in the Shores of Plenty.
Ancientscales can only be found in the Ancient Isles.
Islehoppers are incredibly rare in any area, but specific ones can be found easily at specific islands without bait.
@oroku meh... "Grind" doesn't have to be derogatory. If you just enjoy playing the game, none of this would be a problem.
I enjoy it. I really don't care what I'm doing, I just enjoy playing the game and making my own adventure, rather than relying on someone else to dictate it for me.
It sounds like you've lost your passion for the game and you're looking for a reason to keep playing. Hate to tell you, but there's nothing they'll ever do to make that go away. Not for long anyways.
Good luck.
@corvum-mortis I will admit, you do make a good point. About six months ago when I hit PL I did loose a lot of passion to keep playing this game. From what I remember seeing on the forums in the past I think it was the same way for a lot of people. The grind to get PL never paid off.
However, since then Rare has made some pretty huge changes to the game that has really helped, a lot of those changes being to helping with the grind. After a little time off I did come back, and I absolutely love it. I love fighting megs and Skeleton ships and still love doing Skull Forts even after clearing a couple hundred of them already. More importantly I love just sailing around with a crew of funny people just seeing what kinda antics we can find or make for our selves. And yes, I’m an open ended game like this some grind is going to be there, and expected. There is only so much you can do with an open ended game like this that you don’t really “beat” in the traditional since.
I do however feel that Hunters Call was a step backwards. The fishing itself isn’t the problem, it’s the way it has been implemented into a trading company. Every other trading company has a few different ways to progress, not just standard voyages. You can go up a level or two in GH just blindly sailing around from island to island picking up chests off the beach. But in Hunters Call you really only have the one viable option, catch and cook fish. Which would be ok, if it weren’t for the shear huge amount of time it would/is going to take to gain any meaningful progress in the company.
Rare will make changes, it’ll never be perfect, but it will be better. I’m confident in that because they’ve already done it time and time again with the other companies and the game itself. But those changes will never come if people don’t speak up about it and let Rare know using the system Rare has put in place for just that, these forums.
If Rare had the same mentality of some of the players that just say “get good” or “deal with it” or “stop crying” then they never would have made a suggestion thread in the first place, and we probably would have never seen half the changes they’ve made to the game already.
@oroku I think a "learn to play better" mentality is CRUCIAL for this game. The only true progression this game offers is your own skill at playing the game. All else is purely for the sake of pride.
Fishing is just another way to be prideful, but more casually than any other options.
If you enjoy the activity, then you won't think twice about how long it takes. This goes for any activity in any similar game. And in turn, you deserve to display your pride, because you truly have a passion for it.
If you don't have passion enough to find enjoyment in the journey towards atheistic reward, do you really deserve that display of pride?
(p.s. Debating you does not mean I think you have no right to speak your thoughts and opinions. Debate is essential for improvement.)
@corvum-mortis I agree that some things should be harder, or a challenge. But as I have previously stated, grind is not a challenge, more so, in my opinion, not something to be proud of.
When the Skeleton Fleets first came out me and one other guy took down the Dancing Devil in a sloop. That’s a challenge that I am proud of and I happily display my titles for doing so. Beating a game on its hardest difficulty or while maintaining certain circumstances that make the game more challenging are perfectly fine. Doing the same basic task for well over a hundred plus hours is not.
You and I both know that there is little to no skill involved in the current fishing system. It’s 80% being in the right place with the right bait, and 20% luck. I’d say you and I can both agree there is no challenge or skill involved in move the stick left or right, then pull the trigger to reel in the fish when it’s tired. So since theirs no actual skill involved in fishing Rare cranked up the grind to shear impossible limits to make up for how easy it is. Believe me I’d much rather fishing be a lot harder with far better rewards than just a mindless grind that’s going to take an unreasonable amount of time.
Again, the issue is that the grind for Hunters Call is way to high. Yes grind in an open ended game like Sea of Thieves is expected. But there is a limit. If your limit is much higher than most, then that’s great for you, but if Rare wants to keep the general population of their game happy and playing, they need to address these problems. And like I said, they’ve done it time and time again, and I guaranty they will do it again for Hunters Call.
Also, I agree that some amount of players needing to get better is understandable. If something is too hard for you, get better or give up. I’ve been there my self. However, like I just said, you can’t “get good” at fishing the way it is now. You just do it, it’s not the same as fighting other players. Grind does not equal skill. Just because I push a button on my controller a thousand times doesn’t mean I’m crazy good at pushing a button, it means I have basic motor skills (no offense to anyone that doesn’t, or has any physical limitations.)
I also want to note that I wasn’t implying that you were stifling or challenging my right to post on these forums. My point was that every time someone brings up a valid issue with the game. They are most always met with people just telling them to “get good” or “stop crying and get over it.” That is not constructive or helpful in most every circumstance. Instead they should offer advice as to how to “get good.” Preferably not in a condescending or berating kinda way (as it most often is.)
I’ve said it six was to Sunday. The grind for Hunters Call is too high and needs to be addressed one way or another. Not completely eliminated, just eased up a good bit.
I think that’s about all I’ve got.
I will end in saying that it has been good debating the subject with you. If we ever end up on a crew together I hope we can get into some crazy fun antics.
Good luck to you and good fishing!
@clayboy828 said in Fishing takes way too long:
@gaseousxihro I think they should just get rid of the mechanic that makes fish worth more when they’re cooked. The Hunters Call can cook their own fish!
All different skins of fish look the same when cooked so it's all the more reason for RAW fish to be worth more because the Hunters Call can tell what kind it is by looking at it. And it would be sweet if we could take trophy rare fish and somehow mount them to out boats as an actual trophy. or just to have a really cool looking fish mounted in the galley above the stove to show off.
@gaseousxihro said in Fishing takes way too long:
I spent the last 3 minutes fighting to reel in a fish worth 25 gold and minimal reputation.
Let's talk about adjusting reel times so I can actually catch another fish without my trophy fish burning. I think the time it takes to fight fish could be reduced by half, especially given the meager reputation and gold that MOST fish turn.
I'm an actual fisherman IRL... And in this game, fishing is unrealistically fast. xD
I encourage you to buy a fishing rod, and actually fish IRL.
The map has a built in GPS for your ship so I don't buy the realism argument anyway.
IRL world maps also have a GPS system using the XYZ location system, also known as coordinates... The game just uses a simplified version of it.
It's a big ol' cop out that people try to use to justify bad game design and mechanics. The game is full of magic, hissing skulls, megalodons and undead armies.
You know what's a cop-out? The fallacy of "Oh, there's magix, therefore, do this very specific thing that suits ME because i want it."
Magic is not an excuse to justify changes to the game based on your personal preference, that is a cop-out, a lazy attempt to get your wishes granted.
Try using a stronger argument than "Oh deres magix!".
This game was designed to be played with other players, if you don't want your fish to burn whilst you chain-fish... Bring a friend who cooks and gathers the fish you catch.
Fishing would be more fun if you could actually viably fish and cook as a solo player
Again, this is... NOT... a single player game. ;)
I've been here since launch and I just want ONE update that makes me feel like I should come back to stay.
I've been here since the pre-launch open beta week... I have learned many things during this time, like for instance, that the whole "min-max" attitude towards farming faction progress, isn't how this game is intended to be played. Therefore, i see no reason why Rare should make changes to said game, based on the request of some dude who wants to "go fast like sanic" whilst playing solo. :P
- Hunter's Call quests (the obvious one)
- Additional cooktops on larger ships
- Variable value of fish, as all other turn-ins. Increase the general value with this update.
All of these suggestions exist already. I would explain it but that takes away from your experience.
On top of that, Rare buffed fishing already.
