Do you "grind" in Sea of Thieves? How do you play?

  • @verminpup our play styles match up pretty well. I am not worried about making legendary. I know I will get there eventually. I enjoy playing the game and working with others towards a goal - and that goal is really not all that important to me. Frequently I will just wander random islands, pick up loot and the odd quest from a message in a bottle and make a night of that.

  • I don't grind in the traditional sense of the word. When I started playing this game, I would get 1 voyage from each company and start that way but then I realized that I was getting more rep and coin from OoS and GH so I soon left Merchant Alliance behind and focused on the former for a few weeks.
Nowadays, I have decided to focus on MA since that is going to be more of a grind than the other two. But, my crew and I will get distracted with random raids (we sell what we have no matter how little then head on), check out every shipwreck within our LoS, engage in some sea battles, etc.
Are we grinding? Technically, yes but we have enough entertainment while doing so that we don't recognize it as grinding.

I think doing it this way (the same way I'm doing it) when you hit pirate legend eventually you'll actually feel like a legend. You'll be a master sailor, helmsman, cannoneer, pirate, and treasure hunter. Not just a person that ticked the boxes and hit max level.

Yeah, sure, please, lay off your boxes theory, this game is exactly that, a painful grind of gold and guilds reputation.

When you hit pirate legend you will find exhausted...period.

  • @lobofh I don't think I've done grinding once in this game. I think you may be doing chores instead of playing.

You can lie to yourself if you want, no my problem, but don't try to lie others. Thanks.

  • I kind of hybrid grinding and adventure at the same time. My crew and I have found great ways of making the grind fun, we don't even skip voyages, we just do them. It's great fun.

  • @lobofh I'm really not. Grinding is a self imposed task, its only worthwhile when you want something that requires you hitting whatever point grinding gets you too. The cosmetics don't really mean much to me so I haven't been grinding. Not to say I haven't done any voyages, I just do them pretty leisurely and actually just spend most of my time exploring islands and sailing for fun. I was actually annoyed when I found a box of spices yesterday because I had to decide if I wanted to curtail my good time for the risk / reward of selling it.

In the end my GF found a gold box of some sort, and we decided to go sell them. Though I ended up getting sunk twice after she fell off the boat, once by a galleon and once by some skeles when I came back to pick her up.

In the end we sold nothing and went back to hunting down unmarked island and swimming through ruins, shipwrecks, and coral.

  • @verminpup
Seems we are on the same boat, so to speak. I'm not that bothered with the pirate legend stuff.

The way I play depends on what I feel like doing that evening.

Most of the times I join a random crew, it usually ends up fun, unpredictable and well very random. I do tend to prefer crews with mics.

I have collected quite the SoT players with mics during my random travels, so at times I hook up with old crew members from my friends list to just go on adventures.

Sometimes my gf feels like sailing with me, but she doesn't like the game as much as I do so that's Rare.

A crew I sailed with a few weeks ago ended up to be the most enjoyable one so far. A Portugese guy, English woman and American dude. The entire voyage was filled with laughter and Ive never laughed so much with random people. I ended up on a FB chat with them which now spawns a daily "Pirates?" question.

All the other times when I have less time or just want to chill I go solo. Sometimes just sailing without a voyage or destination, just going around seeing what I'll find.

I'm really enjoying the game and I'm sure I will for a long time. Had some really memorable experiences, loads of laughs, met tons of people and its just so chill. I've never really played a game that's so good at getting a team together in such a short time.

  • im hoping rare starts grinding out some content

Ok, if I could play SoT as a romantic cruise with a girlfriend I am sure I would not grind, we would stare at daisies in the island and whisper procacities in the ear.

...if you play alone, well, the grind is outrageous.

  • @lobofh I don't grind when I play alone! But maybe we don't have the same definition of grinding.

If I play World of Warcraft (I don't) and I slowly go up to top level by doing the main quests and enoying it at my own pace, that's not a grind.

If I farm goblins in one area for 3 hours to get XP, or do the same dungeon 100 times using a specific path and methods that makes it a little faster or easier than other methods, that's grinding.

A lot of people have been grinding missions in SoT in a similar way, especially merchant stuff, but also skull forts.

  • I agree with you on that this is obviously a casual game and if played casually you will have a lot of fun... but if ppl want to grind let them grind but if they complain while they grind that makes no sense to me...

Why do you lie yourselves, buddies?, if you want to have access to endgame cosmetics and reputation you have ahead the mother of all grinds. It's pretty obvious that they are hiding (not very sucessfully) the lack of content with a tremendous reputation grinding.

  • I've given up on grinding to become a pirate legend at least until there's something particularly enticing about it. Now I just do one or 2 voyages per session and mess with other pirates.

This isn't a thread about whether or not there is a possibility to grind, or whether the game encourages it or not, or even about whether the game has enough content or not.

So I'd recommend you take your arguments to one of the millions threads actually about any of those things.

    Thx.

I've been playing the game a lot. As in, a few times a week usually for multiple hours at a time, after work. Throughout my very enjoyable experience with the game, I've been playing with lots of people who keep sharing many frustrations they have, as well as reading similar thoughts on here. I wanted to talk about these frustrations.

A few things I keep hearing:

    • "This game is just grinding for hours up to Pirate Legend".
    • " I HATE SNAKES SO MUCH OH MY GOD RARE WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?"
    • "Ugh, so many skeletons, so annoying."
    • "The Kraken? Seriously? Ugh, I don't wanna deal with this."
    • "Is this ship coming our way? Uuuuuggh"
    • "Merchant quests are the worst!"

Okay, so... Does this game really have to be a grind? Do you actually need to reach Pirate Legend right now? What will it give you? A new skin? Pride? Do you have to actually log in to try and exploit current problems with the merchant voyages, stuck up on 50 cages and spend hours ranking up joylessly?

My trick has been to log in with people I appreciate, casually do whatever voyage we feel like, and enjoying all of the things that happen in between. This game makes me feel like I'm playing a very pretty and very accessible 'Artemis spaceship bridge Simulator' (A star trek like game in which players each have their own stations and must communicate to accomplish tasks). Sea of Thieves it the Ultimate Lan Party.

I'm currently like 27ish in all my rankings, and looking forward to achieving Pirate Legend, especially knowing that getting there slowly means there will be much more pirate legend stuff released by then for me to enjoy.

This is a game to enjoy at your own pace, not a game to grind while knowing that the end will be disappointing anyway!

    • Snakes are funny and cute. Stop trying to do quest so fast, and ask a buddy to play music.
    • Skeletons are a fun challenge, line up your boat to shoot at them while others fight on the beach. I once managed to kill about 15 Golden Skeletons that were out of sight, by using coordinates communicated by a friend across ridges and tress and rocks. It was incredibly satisfying.
    • You don't have to grind, just log in and play and forget your rank for a minute. Set smaller goals, like a nice jacket, or a hat.
    • If the Kraken or other players start attacking you while your cargo holds tons of loot, appreciate that you made a dangerous play by not returning to an outpost earlier.

Those are my thoughts and suggestions on all of these frustrations people have been sharing. I'm curious to hear how others have been playing, and whether there are others on here who see the game the same way that I do!

I play with friends, usually we do voyages until fort comes, some of them do really grind and one of them is a legend already.

You need to wave the hand to do a jedi mind trick.

No, I will stay here, on topic.

  • This is an excellent post, thanks.
