Athena Dungeon - possible new instance for legends

  • So I’m not a Legend yet, not by a long shot (in the mid – late thirties now), but I appreciated that there is a lack of content for the Legends out there other than the Athena voyages.

(This is NOT a whinging post about lack of content though, so please, keep it civil as possible and on topic as this is purely a new idea.)

TL;DR - A new weekly/daily instance, accessed from an uncharted island (or different islands across the map) using the Legendary hideout and tune, with riddle elements and then a fort-like battle inside a private instance, but where treasure has to be carried back to ship with others in wait…

I believe that there should be a Legendary instance for people to fight through, one that awards a legendary chest and some trinkets or some-such that award Athena reputation. It goes a little something like this:

    • You sail to an uncharted island, directed by the Pirate Lord himself by cryptic text (such as Merrick and the Bilge Rats).
    • Upon landing on the island a riddle appears in your inventory, slowly guiding you towards a secluded spot
    • Instead of telling you to dig, the paces direct you to a waterfall, or bushes with a cave behind them
    • Inside is a fairly short tunnel where there are an abnormally high number of skeletons (including some of those nice new exploders!)
    • At the end of this short, but twisty, lantern filled, ethereal-lit tunnel is a wall, on it the Athena symbol
    • Upon playing “We Shall Sail Together” on an instrument, the wall crumbles away to dust and a teleportation vortex opens up (like the one to enter the legendary hideout)
    • Inside this new instance is a large, maze-like cavern, filled with various skeletons, in the middle is a large body of water that is again swirling like the doorway on the ferry – this signals instant death on touch (well – transport to the ferry itself)
    • You fight waves of enemies, much like the fort, but this time there are some new mobs in there – ghosts of pirates past (cursed sails may bring some mobs like this) who failed to reach Athena legend
    • Upon completion of the waves, the water subsides, there, in the middle are an Athena chest and the trinkets

How does this add to the current world?

    • It provides some new PVE elements, that only Legends can access (or those in their crews)

How does it fit in with Rare’s ideals of an equal word?

    • Simple – your Galleon is left outside on an island, where you can’t easily get back to see – what’s to stop someone camping outside for you?

    Thoughts?

    [Edits and Additions]

    • The instance would be unique to each crew who entered on that server
    • The instance would be accessed from different islands each time, not just the same, so camping would not be that easy
    • Different crews receive different locations and don’t enter each other’s portals
    • Ships WOULD be left open and at risk – crew management is key here
    • Other Pirates CAN therefore find you and possibly ruin your efforts, just like any other voyage in the game
    • This would have to be either Daily or Weekly, otherwise the reward would have to be close to time vs reward of current legendary voyages to avoid farming of Athena rep

  • @sshteeve I think your idea would be a nice change from the monotonous grind of Athena's voyages. I have only been legend for less than a week and although the Athena's voyages are fun with me mates. It's still just the same old thing I did to get to legend with the exception of the never ending skelly spawns.

  • @sshteeve
Sounds like an interesting suggestion, but I'm not sure if I get it all.

So the ship is left behind at an island, which gives your crew the choice of:

    • Leaving the ship completely unprotected to do the event faster, but risking to find it sunken with cannons pointed at you.
    • Leave a man behind to inform the rest of the crew about approaching ships

What I'm wondering though, would other crews be able to follow your crew through the vortex once it's opened?

  • @fishst1ck This is the beauty of the design - YES to everything apart from other pirates following you.

It has the risk and reward of any other quest in the game - you have to all leave to go to the other side of the island - you're going to risk someone slipping alongside you and waiting.

You choose to work as a 4 man quickly, or leave a 3rd behind.

  • @sshteeve
But wouldn't another pirate legend be able to go through with his crew though?

  • @fishst1ck No because this would be an instance - plus you make it so that the Pirate Lord sends you to different islands - plenty of space for a few uncharted islands, or plenty of caverns on existing islands too

  • I'm kind of amazed about this. It's a good Idea well thought out. :-)

You will still need a lookout people will know what you're doing so it's not without its drawbacks. The only thing I'd add is a sort of cooldown timer, to prevent farming runs, just have it be a once per day thing. I'd hate to se the endgame go down to having just one thing being done over and over again.

  • @sshteeve
It does sound like a nice change of pace and maybe a good challenge for crews.

I have my doubts about the instanced part though as the ship would be the only sign that something is happening on an island. I'm wondering if it wouldn't make things too easy and at the same time make the normal legendary voyages obsolete?

I guess a certain balance on the amount of reputation earned or the availability of these voyages might help create a balance.

  • @hynieth Very true, would make sense for it to be a daily/weekly

  • @sshteeve IKR?

If it's weekly that would make that voyage the cream of the crop people of a community would flock around their legends to get that booty and do that instance. I'd love to see my friends fight over spots in my crew :-P

  • @sshteeve I like the idea of something like this for the game. Maybe a change or two here or there but, there really should be more and more things to do aside from weekly events.

  • A little messabout taster...
