3rd Person Helmsman

  • At the cost of your compass I think it would be beneficial for the helmsman to be able to see in 3rd person. Nothing too far back but enough to see yourself.

The helmsman would be the only person that has 3rd person. And it would be primarily to see your crew and the wind better. Your vision will still be blocked by the sails. But you wont have to stand directly behind the mast like an idiot.

Or for the ability to “lean” left or right. Just to have a little Vision control. Like the guy in the photo.

  • The ability to lean would be nice, but a 3rd person view does not fit in the current game design and minimalistic hud.

  • Obviously it would be beneficial but that isn't the point. The current vision encourages communication.

  • Leaning would be a nice feature, but the point is that you need to either know the seas like the back of your hand, or rely on your crewmates to guide you if need be.

  • @straw-hat-blake The limited vision of the helmsman is on purpose. One may like it or not, but it's not going to change unless Rare changes it's point of view, pun intended.

  • @Tundra-793 @Gloog @Ktingaling this is why I said nothing too far back. And “or.” I’m not asking for anything crazy. But a captain can hold the wheel with his left or right hand only. Its like the signature pirate move. It’s a shame to have both hands stuck in the wheel constantly

  • i like the way it is it makes you rely on your crew or to get off the wheel and go look for yourself.

  • Psh! I barely use my map these days. Next step...No eyes! I know the seas by how they slap against me hull! As soon as they allow double eye patches it will happen!

You know, you can just let go for 3 seconds, get your bearings, then get back on. Unless your Captain is holding you at gunpoint (blink thrice if you need assistance!), you're free to steer as much or as little as you like.

  • @tundra-793 haha you’re making some assumptions there. Of course you can let go. For more than 3 seconds I hope haha.. Work the back sail and all. Get a good view. That’s all still there with the ability to look From a better position. Or just stand right behind the mast like an idiot

  • I've noticed a trend with people who (like me) love steering the ship. And that's that they glue themselves to the wheel.

    Dont be this guy!

You can let go of the wheel move a bit down the stairs and get a better view. You can easily reach the sail behind you angle it etc. There's no reason to keep clinging to the wheel it wont rotate on its own unless you're in a storm. Just set a course and ajust it every now and then.

Also you can look around while steering so 3rd person view doesn't matter, only place I cant see while steering is behind me.

  • @hynieth
I love me some steering. Luckily my equal love of soloing has taught me to never sit still.

Normally I am a hardcore advocate of 3rd person as I like to see my character but I am actually enjoying 1st person in this game. Something about how they handled the shadows and the visible hands. It just works well for me.

  • Leaning please! The bumpers are right there for it.

Never third person view. The only time there is a third person view is if you're dancing or something like that. Not during "gameplay"

  • The key to driving is 1% actual steering and 99% getting off the wheel. Seeing where the hell your going, looking around and helping our around the ship.

Nothing irritates me more that the helmsman that asks for sales to be raised so he can see! Like he needs to be at the wheel the entire time.

Ship goes like 4 MPH rub down and look! We're suppose to go half sail and half speed so you have a nice view of the ocean?

  • Unless you are trying to monopolize the helm on your ship, it really is not a big deal to let go of the wheel and step two feet left or right in order to have a better view...
