When will a Rare employee state their points of view on the crossplay matter?

  • Plain and simple, where are you guys when it comes to this subject?
You're leaving the community to fight it out between themselves, bringing up a lot of negativity and resulting in a lot of people quiting out of anger while they actually enjoy the game in a lot of aspects besides the whole forced crossplay happening.
I've seen too many posts about this, too many stupid arguments and too much friction. (Have yet to see a reply from a Rare employee though)
Time for you guys to step up and deliver some calming words...

Where do we stand on crossplay for the future?

    1. Will it be forced crossplay like it is now? (In which case the pc versions will have to be downgraded to become more equal to the console versions, though I think this is a lot of work and will p**s of a lot of people on both sides)
    2. Will it become optional crossplay, which we have been asking for over and over and over and over? (Hopefully, just compromise and everyone should be happy.)
    3. Will it be removed from the game entirely? (Hope not, and doubt it)
    4. Is it still under consideration on how to continue with this subject? (We need some sort of info!)

As it is right now, this is going nowhere... So I do truly hope we get some more information on this from the companies side of the story.

So I geuss.. Upvote if you want to see their opinion! (If that actually helps... XD)

  • It's probably still under consideration. Rare has been talking for awhile about how important crossplay was between these game, since it can make the community so much bigger and let two different communities interact with each other.

There's been a lot of push back, so I'm sure the idea of separating the servers or giving players the option to turn off crossplay has come up for them, but we also have to remember that a lot of work went in to coding this specifically to allow crossplay and to get those communities together, and adding a crossplay toggle before trying to balance out crossplay would lead to an almost complete death of the crossplay servers, so that's definitely not the solution they want.

What Rare wants to be able to do is help xbox players not by putting restraints on PC, but by giving xbox better control of their characters as well (but as you can imagine, this can be hard to do, which is why restraints have still been put in place for PC players.

In my opinion - as a PC player, mind you - Rare should put more restrictions on mechanics PC players can abuse best. More specifically, jumpshotting (or bunny hopping, whatever you want to call it) is much easier to abuse with a mouse and keyboard than a controller, because with the default bindings on a controller you can't jump and turn at the same time. There are a few other mechanics that make the game easier for PC players as well, and I think this is what Rare should keep their eye on for future changes.

I've also seen a lot of talk in the community about modders, but I don't know how much of that is accurate. I've seen many pieces of video proof of mods, but most of these were just people being shot twice at the same time or similar things (and yes I know mods exist, but they exist for every game, what I'm talking about is the prevalence. I have never run into a modder, nor has anyone I play with, and I've seen very few reports of them with any backing). In short, I do not think the small population of modders, who are being banned off piece by piece, should be a valid reason not to have crossplay.

TL;DR - Rare should take some time to see what they can do to balance out xbox vs PC before they decide to remove/change crossplay, but it's an issue that can't be overlooked, and removing from the game might be necessary in the end.

  • Well they made the game and marketed it as fully cross play so I think that's their official stance on it.

  • why do people still insist on splitting the community? It would hurt us a lot in the future. Please leave crossplay as is. Just adjusting bunny hopping and maybe some other things people point out would be enough.

  • They often say they're looking at all channels of feedback, they read all the posts on here and most other places, it is surprising that they haven't made a small statement about it. It will just be ignored forever I feel.

    Maybe that IS their statement.

  • @zalavaaris
It was marketed as crossplay, nowhere did it mention that it was forced crossplay!
Every other crossplay game has the option to opt out, why not this one?

    @Sir-Lotus
    How exactly would it hurt?
It hasn't hurt every other crossplay game by having the option to opt out!

It wasn't mentioned that it was optional either. When someone says its cross play I assume it's all in 100%.

  • @zalavaaris
But why would you assume that when every other crossplay game has an option to enable/disable crossplay?
If every other game has optional crossplay, most people would assume that it would be optional in this as well!

  • Rare could test it at least. Just add the disable cross-play option and see how it effects server balance. If it has adverse effects then remove the option. As long as they don't remove cross-play all together, I (PC) play with friends on Xbox.

Ask yourself why they are forcing cross play and you'll have an answer as to why you cant turn it off. Hmmm why would Microsoft not allow an option?

  • They day the make cross play optional is the day I quit the game.

There doesn't need to be an option. They said this game was gonna be cross play and it is and that is one of the reasons that pushed me to buy this game. Separating or giving the option to separate could have a detrimental impact on player-base.
I am a PC player and live for PvP but I have been stomped by plenty of Console players on more occasion then i like to admit. Literally it comes down to the player simple as that.

Will they give us the option ever? Highly doubt it and yes games that take out cross play or give the option have been affected. I.E meaning one side of player-base drops which in turns loses them money.

  • @samurai-ikakuju You're going to quit the game outright if cross-play becomes optional? Please don't do that! We need dedicated pirates who will continue to support the game.

  • @samurai-ikakuju
It is crossplay, & even with the option it will still be crossplay!
Oh yeah, rocket league & fortnite player numbers have dropped off massively because of making crossplay optional haven't they?
    What a completely ridiculous statement!

Are you saying sea of thieves is on the same level of popularity as rocket league and fortnight? That seems.... generous

  • @sweetcalf942652 Taking away crossplay completely would ruin the tests and time they spend on it though.
If it's made optional (like all other games) it shouldn't have to die out and maybe about 30%-50% of the console players will still play crossplay. (I know I still would. Also, I truly don't understand why this would be so extremely hard to achieve)
I think crossplay is a great way to have a bigger community and people fear it will split up the community if it's not there anymore, but we can't pretend the community aint already split up between the two factions, and we from the consoles aren't all vouching for it to disappear completely, most just want it to become optional.
If pc players will accept the nerfing of their game then that's fine (though not perfect), I just think that it's a lot more work and pc players don't want to accept a slower gameplay. (Also it will come down to adjusting mechanics over and over and over and over with perhaps a neverending balancing process, as lots of other games have as well)
You are one of the very few I've seen from the pc player population that says that you're okay with it being nerfed.
I commend you for that (Thumbs up), at least your willing to compromise.

(The froghopping can also be achieved on the xbox too btw, Right Thumbstick is what I use to jump so I can move my camara at the same time. It's just not perfect and I hate froghopping, yet I'm forced to use it, though it's not because of crossplay issues that I'm forced to.)

  • MS has a really right and noble idea here. It makes perfect sense to have the XBOX and Windows platforms compatible and seamless with each other. There are also great benefits for fans and customers (i.e. I buy a digital copy on the XBOX, my kid can play there and I can join him via my PC, etc.)

The problem is, as ever, the players. I'm a longtime PC gamer and console gamer and as much as people play in both sandboxes there are divisions in the make up of players, that cut across attitudes, ages, accessibility, etc.. On a fundamental level there is a larger-than-normal amount of social engineering going on to put these camps in the same sandbox, no matter what game we are talking about.

Hardcore PC streamers, max grinding forts and mercilessly playing with FPS KOS mentalities, honed in brutally competitive shooters hunting the same waters as a Dad and his kid (or anyone for that matter) teaming up to puzzle out treasure chest riddles and catch pigs and chickens is in fact an issue. Add in the inherent superiority of mouse+keyboard control and it's just a titled scenario and an immense design challenge that the "community" exacerbates. It's the same game but a collision of worlds.

I'm not saying there aren't competitive and serious players on the console scene. When it comes to SoT I think it just lives better there myself because I can play it on big TV instead of hunkered down on my PC (also built high end for gaming) - but at the same time the type of player(s) you find in one arena vs. the other can be stark. Also and generally speaking console games have traditionally had more natural roadblocks that minimize the worst aspects of PC gaming (and they are legion). I'm a middle aged dude and I could write a whole journal about the stupefying conduct, language and lack of decency I've encountered only playing Overwatch - a great game with an amazing developer committed to fostering a good community. The devs can only do so much and consoles have been able to limit the worst of PC gaming but crossplay just invites issues of this kind in a more pronounced way, even if they existed to some extent before.

I'm not sure of the solution. I actually believe in and support what MS is after here and we all should if we profess to love gaming. The problem, as ever, seems to be the gamers themselves, or certainly a subset of them that have an outsized impact on developer intentions and other gamer's experiences.

  • @zalavaaris They also said there was almost no difference between the pc version and the xbox version, but this was only tested on PvE and not PvP, so that could be called false advertisement.

They did create a mega thread to collect crossplay feedback as a one spot discussion, but everyone seems to prefer making their own post about it:

There is almost no difference. Sounds right to me! And pve nor pvp were specified.

  • Rare has made it clear on its stance on seperaing the playerbase, and I feel No/Opt Crossplay would separate the community, so I think Rare's stance is like this. (My stance is for crossplay, as I have friends only on PC, while I'm on Xbox only, and if PC have an advantage, I say bring it, a better challenge)

  • They marketed and released the game with crossplay. The absolute level of entitlement in this thread is sickening. Don't like it, don't buy the game and move on.

Think you know better? Develop your own game.

  • @drewbob7 We aren't saying to remove crossplay, we say we want to choose to go into a crossplay server. It's selfish to say you don't want it cause you have pc friends you like to play with, you can still do that when it's optional.

  • @mindarchitect said in When will a Rare employee state their points of view on the crossplay matter?:

You know whats selfish, demanding a game be changed to cater to your minority opinion.

  • @logansdadtoo 1. Fortnite BR was never cross platform with PC/Console and they said they never would. They said they MIGHT do xbox/ps4. But still that is besides the point because if you didn't know that ps4 is losing player base because keyboard and mouse is supported in that game on console then this is a mute subject.
    2. Rocket League player base has years over this game and still just fine since most PC people play with a controller and it is easier with such so another mute point. Never heard of it being an issue in RL.

  • @mindarchitect "When will a Rare employee state their points of view on the crossplay matter?"

Well, seeing as they added crossplay intentionally to the game... I think that should be your answer. xD

  • @fishst1ck I was not aware of this thread as I'm mostly in the discussion or feedback part of the forums.
Also see tons and tons of topics about this come by, which is why I ask an official statement on it, wether it's "we are still deciding" or "we have decidided this".
    Thanks for the link though!
I'll put my thoughts on it there as well.

  • the only advantage i see with crossplay is communication. On windows 10 you can communicate in party chat, game chat and text chat at the same time. On Xbox we have to choose between game and party chat and text chat is not an option.

Make keyboard text speak available on Xbox! Please.

  • @mindarchitect people bought a crossplay game, they now have a cross play game. fragmenting the player base to suit a minority would not make sense to the dev team and back peddling on the cross play which MS pushed heavily as a feature of the game would not go well. In addition, who is paying for the extra overhead of the extra servers? You will need to create 3 different server structures, xplay, pc only and xb only. Now you have 3 sets of servers, so maintenance times get extended, the chances for bugs are now 3x higher. it is not just a matter of coding a switch, there are recurring costs that would need to be paid by someone for this change.

  • When will a Rare employee state their points of view on adding a down vote forum button matter?

THE GAME WAS DEVELOPED AND RELEASED WITH CROSSPLAY. You are being willfully obtuse.

  • @stellarsacia Excuse me? What "level of entitlement" are you talking about?
I'm simply sick of this subject coming back over and over and over with the same results (no results) popping up.
I hear a lot of people complain about there being no response from Rare at all, so here you have it: A question directed to Rare.
How terrible of me to ask them for an awnser!

  • @stellarsacia Obtuse? I don't even know that word matey...
Geuss you're hating on me for bringing up your precious crossplay advantages, sorry about that, hope you'll lose them soon though! :D

It's selfish to want to play with the only friends who have the game, to not be lonely?

(of a person, action, or motive) lacking consideration for others

I am considering others, my friends (I also support not separating the player base just because it's not fair, so that counts to)
