Pirate legend was a bait to cover up the dread.

  • I believe that most of the hype this game generated was due to the 'LEGENDARY' status. Having streamers and hardcore gamers race something was a terrific marketing move, once again. The legendary status was a great tour de force, and a complete bait.

The pirate legend grind is the developers' answer to the question: what are we going to do with our sandbox ? How are we going to get enough momentum for launch (with our ridiculously insignificant content)?

Don't grind it like crazy now, I garantee you that it will become realistically available to you casual gamers as well. Within 6 months tops, the grind will be facilitated or cut down.

While this grind is pretty much what constitutes SOT's content right now, I foresee that it will become easier, which is a good thing since this content is the most boring stuff ever seen in the history of modern gaming. On the other hand, it will spell doom for a non-competitive game based on cosmetic progression... Oh , and imaginary content created with friends...
Downvote // dislike // dot not share.

I'll bring the thread back from the ferry of the dead in six months tops, maybe even before that!

  • @capt-baguette Well legendary status is prestige, there's been talk of a legendary captain status too that gives you the ability to name your ship along some more ship customization.

Ultimately, it's a game about gaining a reputation for yourself, PvP is very emphasized.

Kinda like getting max rank in CoD, only more immersive and visual. Personally i like it, but is till agree that the game needs more, relax though, as you might already know, rare promise regular content updates for free.

Come back in a few month time as you said and this game will most likely be transformed into something more epic than it already is. :D

  • @capt-baguette w/e

  • @sweltering-nick I agree with most of what you said, but we really should have been able to name our ships from Rep 0. The fact that we only get it with a level of status is pretty bland and means there is absolutely no growth/importance to the name. Just some arbitrary random highlight that pathetically screams "Hey, now I am relevant! pay attention to me!".

  • @solysdayga "but we really should have been able to name our ships from Rep 0. The fact that we only get it with a level of status is pretty bland and means there is absolutely no growth/importance to the name."

You need to earn the right to name your ship... That's pretty much standard for every pirate captain ever.

  • I think it will already be enough if they removed the triple level 50 requirement to make it much more enjoyable to get to legend. Let me decide if I become a legend by searching treasure OR participating in PVE OR being a merchant. I should not have to do all three. There's already sails and clothes connected to level 50 in each category.

  • @sweltering-nick Uhm...what? Provide some historic evidence for supposing that every pirate captain ever didn't just name their ships as soon as they got captaincy. Ships were named when launched or acquired...not after messing around with them for a while. The names didn't mean much until action was taken but the name was there whether or not anyone knew of it. Your "standard" is standard for no pirate ever.

  • Like I've said before, legendary status won't mean much when my ship meet's yours on the sea ;)

  • @capt-baguette Very interesting, and likely accurate points made. Not a business man myself, the marketing in this game would make a used car salesman blush! Please don't mistake me, I enjoy the game, I really do. Just so confusing how they sold this...Take for example the Black Dog and Merc Packs. If you happen to have one of these or both, what good is gold in game for you? I have both, so basically I buy the goods on level up from the various factions (compass, shovel, mug, lantern, etc.) and that is it. Kinda worthless really. Then the Legend reveal...wow! I thought it was some sort of sick joke when they opened their first "Voyage". Yeah...I was a sucker, I spent my $60, and bought a book too! Well done MS and Rare, well done.

  • Sailors were superstitious: ships were named when they first launched and changing a ship's name would have been taboo. So would failing to name a ship when it took to water or using the name of another ship.

  • I think people are going to need to reevaluate what this game is. If your definition of content is more skins - prepare to be disappointed. There is no way Rare could keep up with demands for that kind of content with the model they have in place right now.

That 50/50/50 guy had everything purchased and was still sitting at 800k gold.

The gold grind is pointless - this is a PvP game. The content we need is more kraken-esque peril at sea and a few tweaks to make sea combat more engaging.

  • @mostlyjustokay yeah the voyages are pointless. my ship and character is already fully customized so I don't need voyages. I could sail to devils ridge? and stand there! or I could sail to mermaids hideaway.... and stand there! I could sail back and forth oh wait thats all there is to do. and once you just keep sailing back and forth enough times to eventually make pirate legend, cool hide out......... I hope you like just standing there.

  • @deadlock-ganj I firmly believe that the PvE is just a mechanism to get you out on the water with some sense of purpose so that you can run into other pirates to do battle with. The chests/treasure puts some sort of stakes on the fights but not too much - neither dying nor losing treasure really means anything as gold doesn't get you much of anything. That's not a lack of content, that's the specific design of the game.

That being said, the ship customization needs to be as accessible as the clothing - maybe not super fancy stuff, but it shouldn't take you long before you can make your ship your own, as that's the thing that the other players are going to see.

  • @mostlyjustokay I didnt say lack of content. I said pointless.. (super boring as well) and the ship is customizable? my ship is already fully customized. only cost $210,000... very limited selection though. but straight cosmetics isn't really content either.....

  • Pirate Legend should have been based on pvp stats, not having random crews turn in loot for you.

  • @deadlock-ganj I think we're saying the same thing. Yes, the ship is customizable, but that should happen from nearly the get-go and be some of the least expensive things to purchase initially.

The voyages aren't exactly pointless - like I said I think they're just meant to give you a place to go on the map, hopefully meeting other pirate ships on the way.

They do need more ship customization options - every ship should have the potential, at least, to be noticeably different. Clothing I care about much less.

  • @mostlyjustokay I kind of like having to earn the ship customization.... but I totally feel where you are coming from. especially just maybe styles of ship too.... styles of sails. different trim. you shuld be able to design your own sails and colors...... maybe they should give you some free basic pre sets and have it cost the big money to put on your personal colors/emblems.... I really think there should be like an NPC royal navy too... give the pirates an incentive to work together instead of pure PVP. I feel like there needs to be more events like the skeleton forts to make good money, (at the very least have more than one per server to divide the attacking players) and if a ship sinks it should migrate servers so that crew cant keep coming back...

  • @sweltering-nick HOW is it pvp emphasized? all the systems of progression are for starting voyages and turning in treasure. yes you can steal treasure but if the others go for pvp as well they won't have treasures. And as a solo player it feels really F-ing bad to have MY progression stolen cuz i happened across some people that were better at navigating their ship

  • @jecksauce yea, i just noticed. you don't even get to know who killed you when you die or get sunk... how am i supposed to know who to fear?

  • @capt-baguette zzzzzzz for all the people that played 15 hours a day and are disappointed that you didn’t turn into a pirate god with the sword of 1000 truths. You are prestige now, congrats and go get some sleep.

  • @deadlock-ganj No doubt the fancy stuff should be as a result of efforts in the game, but you should be able to have more than the default ship before 60 hours or whatever it is to earn it.

I think it's important to have every ship be PC controlled, but that doesn't mean there aren't opportunities for more sea peril to vanquish (the kraken wasn't the only tale of terror on the seas).

I also think it's important to find a design that moves away from "making good money," as that has taken over the game when it's really supposed to be just a tiny part of it. Edit: Because if you make the game about making good money then you have to support having something to do with it - and Rare is never going to be able to keep up with that demand.

  • @capt-baguette
All discussion on Pirate Legend status & the pirate hideout should be kept to the mega thread m8.
    https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/46038/mega-thread-pirate-legend-and-pirate-hideout

  • @capt-baguette Yeah I am more than a little worried you are right in this case man. The content is abysmal. That's one of the reasons that even though I enjoy the PVP aspects of the game I advocate for giving people a peaceful mode style option. I think it will make it harder to disguise the lack of content and put more pressure on Rare to make more diverse content while hopefully giving the game a broader appeal to grow the player base. Because seriously that new ship sail smell only last a few minutes.

  • Perhaps you should post in the mega thread for this.

  • @mcstabbypants The content is largely fine, it's the design of the game wrapping it up as something that it isn't that's the problem.

It's not Water Skyrim or Aqua Diablo and was never meant to be - it's not supposed to be a game about grinding gold. It's supposed to be a game about fighting pirates and getting treasure along the way.

However by designing the quests the way they did and ignoring progression except for related to gold - we're here. And the people who want a grindy RPG are starting from almost zero in terms of that kind of content. There is no way Rare is going to be able to keep up with the demand to fill that void while people are playing it. It takes much longer to develop than to play through.

  • @solysdayga said in Pirate legend was a bait to cover up the dread.:

we really should have been able to name our ships from Rep 0. The fact that we only get it with a level of status

Maybe get to name your ship with status, in a couple months***

  • @mostlyjustokay Yeah no. There are only three factions and their quests are almost identical. Go to island and get thing then bring thing back to get gold. They need more factions or more random things to pop up like skeleton forts. You can deny the lack of content all you like but you are in the extreme minority. Don't get me wrong I love the game as is, but at least I can acknowledge it's flaws.

  • @mcstabbypants I think you misunderstand. I agree that the content in this game is unacceptable from the viewpoint of a PvE, grindy loot-based RPG. Zero quest variety, no real reward. It wouldn't hold muster as a mobile game.

However, as a PvP oriented game, there's more than enough for a release.

The problem is that they wrapped their PvP game in a brain-dead simple PvE model, which made everybody play it as if the PvE was the point of the game.

It's faulty game design more than lack of content that is the main problem.

  • @mostlyjustokay Sorry this isn't a PVP oriented game its clearly a PVE game that has some PVP aspects as it was designed. You may want it to be PVP but that simply isn't true. People play it as if PVE is the point of the game because that is in fact the point of the game.

  • @mcstabbypants Would you play this game if it didn't have the ships? I would hope not, off the boat it's pretty awful.

The developers spent most of their time with the water and the ship mechanics, and all of the early reveals were with 4 v 4 ship battles. It's obviously where they spent their time and how they envisioned the game being played.

It's a sandbox, and different strokes, I get it - but if you think this game will ever deliver on content if you're playing it like a PvE RPG you're not ever going to be satisfied. It takes a lot longer to develop content than it takes to consume it, and they're starting from near zero in that respect, with people who are already playing and waiting to quickly eat up whatever comes next. They will never get ahead of that.

I'd just rather they focus on where the game's strengths are, and it's not the PvE.

  • @deadlock-ganj said in Pirate legend was a bait to cover up the dread.:

You don't seem to like what the game is, mate.

Oh, and you IMPLY lack of content by repeatedly saying 'and stand there'...

    Equivocating is annoying, btw....

  • @mrbear24 it is a beautiful shell.

  • @solysdayga "Uhm...what? Provide some historic evidence for supposing that every pirate captain ever didn't just name their ships as soon as they got captaincy."

That's my point exactly, Captain status comes after legendary status... Meaning you are not a captain yet... Once you become a captain, you can name your ship.

  • @crimzonwing "HOW is it pvp emphasized? all the systems of progression are for starting voyages and turning in treasure."

    One word

    Pirates.

    pirate
    ˈpʌɪrət/Submit
    noun
    1.
a person who attacks and robs ships at sea.
    "a pirate ship"
    synonyms: freebooter; More

This is a pirate game, FPS is clearly emphasized, i'm dumbstruck that you missed this elephant in the room, l**o... How did you completely miss the fact that this is a pirate game?! xD

"And as a solo player it feels really F-ing bad to have MY progression stolen cuz i happened across some people that were better at navigating their ship"

Get better at the game, then, that's not any reason to complain on the forums, bro.

  • Is... is that proper use of the word 'dread?

It just sounds... odd in that sentence.
