Open Crew suggestion

  • I don't know if this is an idea that has been floating around or not. But I have two ideas that would help with quality of life, and help the open crew experience.

First, I think it would help the quality of life if there was a way to set your emissary flag as a captain before you even set sail. This would be a simple way to help experienced crews have a little bit more quality of life. But mainly, this would help open crews set the direction the captain wants that session to go in, without the need of 2 other crew mates on a galleon to vote up emissary as well.

Second, going off of this emissary idea, I think it would be great there was a feature to be able to spawn into a session with a specific emissary flag raised. Like, you can select ship type, select open crew, and (optionally) select desired faction to join under. This would make it so the more casual Sea of Thieves gamers can join an open crew that is sailing for a company that they want to grind for. Maybe you want to hunt some megs under hunters call, but you have no way to reasonably find a group outside of discord. This would make the in game experience so much better, and it would allow casual gamers an easier way to progress in the game without affecting the more advanced gamers.

I don't know how this would work logistically, but as someone who doesn't have hours to game each day, being able to spawn into a group who is going after the same company as me, would be so nice.

I mean, your ship spawns right at the dock....near the emissary tables....that you'll pass by as you go to your ship. Then you can invite whomever you wish, and they'll see what faction you're choosing to represent.

  • his would help open crews set the direction the captain wants that session to go in

    What about the Crew wants?

  • @europa4033 if you select your ship and open crew, then you will have to matchmake before entering the game. Some players you matchmake with may not want to raise the same flag, might not know about the system, or even just troll. Most open crew sessions die immediately because the crew isn't doing something. It would just help sessions get going, as there would now be a sense of direction in the world.

Not everyone has people to invite, it would help find player who want to do similar things. especially in a world as vast as Sea of Thieves.

  • @burnbacon well, its the captains ship... the crew is more then welcome to voice something in chat, but it would help get sessions up and going. Most open crew sessions just end up being whatever one person wants to do as it is, while everyone else is along for the ride. I was just giving a suggestion that makes it so people can find crews that are looking to do similar things.

  • Couldn't the first suggestion be resolved by starting as a closed crew, set your emissary and then set crew to open ?

  • @odiamond-7

Or, you select your ship, load in the game, raise whatever emissary you want, players see which faction you're doing, and they join (since they're interested in leveling up that faction too) as you're buying supplies, organizing barrels, etc. How it currently works.

You do realize this already happens in the SoT official discord yes? Players looking to level up any faction advertise what they're doing, players who are interested join up, get invited, and they're off.

  • @lem0n-curry could be, I was making the point that it would just be a quality of life change that would help set up the second change.

  • @europa4033 you cant see any of that information before joining the game, and its always random. More often than not, you are spawning into a group thats not doing anything.

So how it often goes as a player trying to join an ongoing group is: join lobby, no one doing anything, players leave, you leave because youre now solo on a galleon.

how it often goes as a player trying to host is: start lobby, players join, see what youre doing, and leave because they dont like what youre doing, leaving an endless revolving door of players.

So yeah, being able to see the emissary before joining, would go a long way in players staying.

  • @europa4033 I've been on the discord many times trying to get into a group, its not always that simple. Let alone people aren't always active on it. But the main thing is that a proper group system shouldn't be left up to a third party website that most players aren't using. Most people who play this game are causal. They don't want to have to hop on discord to be able to find a group of player that are actually playing the game.

I am trying to give a suggestion that would help players who don't have hours to drop into the game, who want to enjoy the game without the hassle of going through a 3rd party app, and especially who don't have a crew to play with.

  • All equal on sea and ship.
Forcing players to do what 1 wants to do because “I’m Captain” leads to people not wanting to join crews.

Need more ways to encourage joining other crews.

  • @burnbacon I don't know how many open crews you play with, but unless someone puts forth a direction in the session, generally, nothing happens. Its not a hierarchy thing, its a, lets play the game thing.

  • @odiamond-7

Unless you're talking about the main SoT community discord, I have no idea what you're talking about, since no matter what time I look, people are always forming and joining ships.

I just looked now, and there are tons of players looking. A crew is looking for members to get Burning Blade rituals, a player is on a galleon looking for others who want to level up Hunters call/fishing, another is looking to level up reapers with emissary hunting. There's too many looking for crew for me to list here. This is just General. The New Swabbie list is busy as well. Load up your captained ship, raise an emissary, post what you're doing (gola hoarder, OoS, etc.) and you're good to go. Not sure what the issue is here, especially when what you described in your original post is currently happening?
