What's the point of Glitterbeard being 8-man?

  • I've been wanting to get this done, but it's seemingly impossible to start simply due to the 8-man requirement..

Last two groups I tried joining were full of children who had no idea how to play the game, and everyone else wants nothing to do with anything that isn't hardcore PvP/Reaper stacking.

  • @buckydk this old chestnut. Trust, we complained about it at the time. There are some players/groups that offer Glitterbeard runs for those who need it. Maybe do a bit of browsing on social media.

    One example: https://x.com/gh_honamar/status/1713241597909856762?s=46

  • @buckydk https://www.seaofthieves.com/news/legend-of-glitterbeard

The 'point' of Glitterbeard is explained in the journals you find.

The fact that people play as Pirates doesn't mean that bonds or friendships can't be formed.

The fact that it requires multiple crews is part of the charm as it requires people from different crews to come together and (even if only temporarily) become firends.

  • The fact that people play as Pirates doesn't mean that bonds or friendships can't be formed.

It hurts being told this, whenever I try to be somewhat peaceful in this game I'm blasted to smithereens with a "This isn't sea of friends"

  • @buckydk I feel your pain my friend!!

Several times I try to keep to myself in some corner of the sea just fishing for my decorations!! But someone ALWAYS comes and sinks my ship!!

  • I can see guilds significantly helping this in the future

people randomly finding their own guild members, people finding friendly guilds they know or just forming ones and deciding to carry it over to glitterbeard.

that guild name recognition will be huge for helping out with this down the road

  • @look-behind-you The problem is that getting 8 people "ad-hoc" is nearly impossible and trying to plan for it requires an insane amount of server hopping to get all 8 on one server.

To me, as a software engineer, it is a design mistake because the game is designed to not allow 8 players to get together on one server and yet this requires 8 players to get together on one server. The two designs are in conflict. No offense but the rest is excuses.

Good designs are consistent across the product line.

  • @foambreaker I think the point Tri is making is that it’s not about getting on the server but rather meeting a crew already there and convincing them to come and do it. Shallowly optimistic I know.

  • @kobo-shark not here.

  • @foambreaker Glitterbeard is 100% something that should happen rather than be forced.

I have been lucky enough to be involved (Organically) twice I think.

People looking to 'finish' or 'complete' Glitterbeard are often missing the point of it entirely.

Whilst it does have rewards and commendations attached (which I understand some people will want because 'gimme everything') it is about much more than that.

Is it difficult to find enough people sometimes? Of course it is, Pirates are Pirates after all. Should it be made easier? HELL NO!

  • Wow didn’t expect to see this topic come out.

Of all things. A truely difficult task to complete but “journey” and friends you make to complete it, what the story is about. (Maybe I’m wrong)

As the core soul of SoT, it’s not about the gold…it’s the adventure and all those you meant along the way. Good or bad

  • Eh, as a solo player I just had to accept I wasn't getting it and move on.

It was probably one of my first steps to getting over my need to collect all cosmetics. Now I'm much more chill about it.

  • @buckydk I made this about 3 times, everytime naturally through meeting people on the server, but actually, if you have 8 people it should be pretty easy to get them all on one server...8 people, all start a galleon at the same time...shouldn't take long to find each other

  • I have not done it, would be interested in doing it, however I have no idea how that would be possible as I'm not massive fan of spending 1 hour server hopping to get 2 ships on a server :D...Also I keep forgetting and delaying getting it done through discord.

  • @look-behind-you
Imma be honest, I have yet to see a single time that actual randoms got together and bothered to do the journals leading up to the finale.
It takes hours especially trying to coordinate with randoms yet alone players that have no idea what is going on half the time.
You can get lucky if you sail on a galleon and find another galleon that is willing to do it, and in that case no one bothers doing the lead up with journals, it's straight to the island..

Every glitterbeard I attended to were from players that asked prior in a group setting on Discords and it was straight to the final part.
I have yet to hear someone doing Glitterbeard by amassing 4 other crew/ships and starting from the journal phase organically.

  • @ix-indi-xi

The journals don't have to be done by 8 people. It's probably smarter to do these with your crew or on your own.

About a year into its release after a fight with a galleon they asked us (duo-sloop) to do glitterbeard. After we sold the loot we did it together with another sloop crew they asked.

    I know it's rare, but it's possible.

  • @lem0n-curry
Don't get me wrong, I've done glitterbeard around 7 times in total, half were with randoms on the seas.
But Never once did we actually did the journal phase.
It was straight to the final phase where normally one person would tell everyone what to do.

  • @buckydk Hey, fella. I'm friendly and I'll help you do it sometime. It's all in the way you approach people. But the most important thing: is just being really really lucky.

I haven't done it at all, but I've read a lot of the journals now. Two kinds of people in this world. Those who want to own the forest, and those who can't see the trees for a flower. Get it? Because this is a step deeper than "can't see the forest for the trees."

    Ah well.

  • @crowedhunter
It's not that deep, most people just want the commendation and be over with despite it's significance.

  • @ix-indi-xi Maybe not to you. I enjoy the journals and finding them.

  • @ix-indi-xi It's now been three hours three days since I started looking for the same server with a group from The Golden Belly.. hopping from server to server.. I doubt this was the developers intentions..
