Game keeps crashing

  • Hi there!
I play sea of thieves on the Xbox one and a common issue I’ve been having is that at random moments while I’m playing the game casually the game crashes all of a sudden, another issue is whenever I’m playing a tall tale my game crashes a massive amount of times to the point where it’s reset my ship to an outpost :/

Is there any way I fix this?

  • In the past week, my Sea of Thieves game on Xbox One has crashed while I was carrying a Storage Crate 3 times. The second time it happened, it also crashed my Wife's Xbox One X at the same time as mine while we were playing together (I was the one carrying the Storage Crate at the time). I'm hoping a fix comes soon, this is so frustrating.

Update: My wife and I tried playing this morning. She crashed first (Xbox One X) while using the spyglass to look at an island and I crashed (Xbox One) a few minutes later after she reconnected while I was trying to steer our Sloop. I think I'm taking a break from SoT until this gets fixed. I'm spending more time in load screens at this point than I am playing the game.

  • There is currently a know issue where the game crashes more often than it should (well it should never crash, but you get the idea). This has been an issue since the last downtime, so it will hopefully be fixed soon. But it’s always best to raise a support ticket here so they get as much information on the issue as possible!

  • Hello,,,,,

Think we are having the same issue..

The game randomly just shuts down no error code random intervals, the game freezes for a moment en poef gone,,, this happend after a update to my GPU drivers and windows updates.
Sometimes nothing not a peep a smooth running game other day crash crash crash etc.

Am streaming on Twitch.tv/LordCookkiie and posted a clip of the crash( and no am not promoting just want people of SoT to rewatch the vod for the crash)

Tryed the standard recommended stuff whitelist the game with antivirus etc check the windows store

    GPU is a RTX 3090
    CPU is a 12 Gen

Bottomline I have enough horse power to run the game.

Only answer i want is : has this to do with the game or something on my end because it was working fine.

  • ahoy!
i too am having crashing issues with my xbox one. i'm starting to think that they're testing the game less on console and more on pc for convenience sake (but what do i know)

nonetheless this needs to be looked into, i thought it was just my xbox but looking into it this is more and more common with every update. i really hope they don't end up completely abandoning console players.

hoping this could be patched soon! i hate having to captain a galleon and my xbox completely close the game lol

  • Hello,
I also have this problem. The game get a freeze than just shut down. I tried a lot of times and still get the crash between 5-10min.
I never had this kind of problem before, but now it's just unplayable. I'm on PC : GTX 3080 Ti, Win 11, i9-12900k
I have try both Xbox Store and Steam version and still get the crash. I also have white list the game on my antivirus, done the reset and update drivers, etc...

As LordCookkiie said, it would be nice to know if it's the game or if it's something on my side (or maybe something else)

  • Having exactly the same issue here. It just started today but have been playing since a lot of months without problems.

Actually reinstalling the game, the crash scan found no corrupted files but I'll try a clean install, but I don't think it'll solve it out.

Maybe there is a link with a nVidia driver update like it happened a few months ago ?

    Playing on PC here :
    i9 9900
    32GB RAM
    GeForce RTX 2080 Ti
Installed on a fresh and clean SSD

EDIT : After a fresh install it's even worst... It keeps crashing when trying to load a session (launching game after main menu). I can't even play...

  • It happens to my friends a fair bit, I seem to have not been impacted yet, but I'm sure my luck will run out soon enough.

    We're all XB Series X.

  • @tinybandaid1503 I have had more crashes on Xbox one since the last update than I have had since launch combined. I had 4 last night, and two of my crew mates had two a piece. It was also un-equipping all my things. Been an interesting one for sure, as this game has been really stable for me for a long time. The crashing has been really really bad

  • Ahoy!
I too have been having some issues. 430 hours into this game with very minimal crashes, and theyre usually hazelnut beard code crashes, but upon trying to play today, I dropped in to three different games, bought some starter supplies, and the game gladly took my money, but upon trying to collect said supplies, my game crashed every single time without fail. Hopefully the issue is resolved soon amongst the many other issues with this game (i.e server lag, input loss, not so efficient server merges, etc) Until then, I think Im setting aside this game that I've been playing the most as of recently, which is unfortunate.

  • @dr-orchamedes yeah I go through sometimes 5+ crashes when I’m doing tall tales, i don’t know if it’s our systems being an “older” model now or what but it’s become quite annoying, I’ll tolerate the crashes and keep playing but sometimes I do need a break when it becomes too much.

  • hey guys, i got the exact same problem. The game keeps crashing after 1-15 minutes.

i tried every Bugfix from youtube + google and the game still keeps crashing.
I reinstalled the game 9 times (every download 81GB) and now im just frustrated because there is no fix working.

in my opinion it has a sth to do with the actual graphics driver for nvidia cards

or the problem is from the game itself.

i deactivated all overlays, overclocking softwares and diagnostics like CPU temprature but still no solution in sight.

Im waiting for the next SoT update + Graphic driver.

    My specs: i9- 10900K + RTX 3090 (Asus)

  • I’ve been having major issues solo veils and can’t finish them, so sick of it. Rarely complain tbh but i’m trying to get last achievement and it’s hard enough solo never mind not being able to FINISH IT 🥹

  • Hello, I have crashing issue recently a lot too.

Even when I'm solo sloop with almost nothing on the ship, this keeps crashing averagely 2 times an hour. It's dramatic, and makes unable to do bigger sailing.
Hope developers are aware of it and it will be solved soon. It was never so serious like now.

On my side it looks like I have perfect framerate, then it shutters for two seconds and the game exits itself with no error. When re-launching, it asks to check game files integrity and then I can re-join my previous session.

  • Frequent Crashes

Hey everyone. The thread linked above has close to 2k views and 30 posts. Please feel free to contribute. The more people that talk about this, the more likely this is to get fixed. Thanks.

  • Just to update : Still got the same issues. I noted that my wife don't have any crash and she is still with the nVidia drivers from 1 version before. I told her to don't update and she can play without any trouble.

I'm nearly sure the issue is coming from nVidia drivers, or is linked with an update of SOT too...

It's been way too long since the issue started, it's taking ages from Rare to fix it ! I can't play my favourite game anymore...

  • One more update : Drivers updated, game updated, still crashing after 2 or 3 minutes of play time...

  • @lothanstar I'm having the exact same issue for a week or so now. I have a windows 10/11 dual boot. In windows 11 SoT works fine, but in windows 10, which is what i use predominantly, it does not run for more than a minute or two before it crashes. The annoying thing is there are no logs for me to analyse. It just dumps me to desktop with no reason why.

  • Crashing within a few minutes of launching the game since the last update. Doesn't matter if I'm in the main menu, start a game, join a game, or whatever, it always crashes. I've verified the game, and checked for driver and game updates with no success.

On PC with a 2060 Super and i9-10900K.

  • Since season 7, I’ve constantly been getting hazelnutbeard and kicked from the game, and if I try to rejoin I get marblebeard. I’ve tried every solution, but nothing’s worked. Xbox One

  • I'm having this issue as well. I have tried pretty much every single help guide I can find, and have completely uninstalled and reinstalled SoT, my drivers, and even the xbox app itself, and am just at a lost at what is wrong. the game will run from anywhere from 5 minutes to about an hour before just freezing followed by a crash, and the "crash report" thing always says nothing was wrong. I've tested multiple graphic settings to the same result. The crash will happen no matter what i am doing from just sitting on an island, sailing around, or doing events it will just freeze then close to desktop every time.

  • Hi guys i had the Same issue and think i fixed it for me.

I have 1.500h on the game with that exact PC.

    ROG STRIX Z370-F GAMING
    Intel 9900k
    32GB - 3000 mhz Ram
    RTX 2080 TI

    Issue Description:

Whenever i logged into the game one out of the three could happen:

    • Game Crash after just a couple of minutes of play, without any Error Message just a freeze followed by a crash to desktop.

    • Game wouldn't start as of missing or corrupt /Athena/xxxxxxxxxxxxx file. When I did a check for integrity of game files nothing was found. Afterward, i could start the game and try to log in which was followed by another crash to the desktop.

    • Game wouldn't start or crash with an error message that my GPU does not support Shader Model 5.

    Solution Approach:
One thing I noticed before every crash my FPS seemed to be stable to the max limit before crashing. So I checked my HW monitor if my GPU or CPU went into an issue that happened "on Load" but I could not see anything SUS :) here.
I tried literally anything besides a clean install of win10.

    • Reinstalled all drivers/updates ( GPU, Windows)

    • Checked for Antivirus Exclusions

    • Run integrity of game files like 20ish times.

    • Reinstalled the game on 3 different Harddrives ( 2 x m2 , 1x sata ssd)

    • Lowered and disabled my Overclock ( 3.6 ghz, 4,7 ghz, 5.0 ghz )

    Solution:
In My case, I found in some forums that there is a Sound Device/driver that could cause the issue.

I instantly checked my Sound devices and found that with any update of windows or any other software a new sound device got registered on my PC.

    Sonic Studio Virtual Mixer: https://pasteboard.co/bocDuZiN1vio.png

Here is the thread that bumped me into trying to fix it: https://www.reddit.com/r/ASUS/comments/rwsed3/sonic_studio_virtual_mixer/

Disabling that in my sound settings fixed my game and I had an 8hr grind the other day without lowering my Overclock or anything else that I tried.
