Suggestions to Rare's SOT as to not to lose players to up and coming rival Pirate Game from major Competitor Game Company

  • As a player of Sea of Thieves I find the game very fun but after playing for a few months I realize that there are few times where it can get monotonous and boring. I am offering suggestions to keep the game fun and exciting that will make the players want to keep coming back to play again and again. I suggest this as there is an upcoming Pirate Game from a major game company that I will just refer to as Scooby-Soft. There is a danger here to Rare losing its player base of Sea of Thieves Players if Rare does not take this threat seriously and starts adding more content adding to their multiplayer game on the high seas.
    Here's a few suggestions:
Why isn’t there a bounty system for players? When you think Pirates do you not think of wanted signs and bounties for their heads. I think this would be fun to have a bounty on your head that others could try to collect. The more you sink other players ships or kill other players would each time raise your bounty. You could either create a new board or add it to the map board that exists already to find the bounties.
The Order of Souls should offer voyages that require you to seek out Skeleton Ships. Rare did a great job by creating and adding Ghost Ship Voyage Quest to the list of quest choices in Order of Souls. What I really would like is to see is Voyages where you intentionally seek out and take on Skeleton ships and eventually fleets. The voyages could give you clues where to find the skeleton ships just like the ghost ship voyages.
With regards to the suggested New Ships instead of creating whole new ships why not just create variants of existing ships with either having more hull durability, firepower, or speed. The size categories would still fall within the base 3 ships (Small 1-2, Medium 3-4, Large 4). A variant of a Galleon could be called a Frigate. An alternative to a Sloop could be a canon boat. An alternative to Brigantine could an Asian Inspired Junk Ship.
There has to be a better system for making alliances and meeting other players in the game via a radial wheel or something. I think it would be neat that when you raise an emissary flag that those flying the same emissary flag should automatically be added as your ally on the map and should be able to see their where-abouts.
I think it would be good if there was a mechanic for when players attack other player’s they may offer a percentage of their plunder to them as a means to deter another ship from sinking their ship. There is nothing more depressing than losing everything you just worked for two hours playing the game. That takes the wind out of anybody’s sails to want to keep playing. I know this last one is a stretch 😊

  • @smeedapirate that game has been in development for 9 years. its been scrapped and started over like half a dozen times. Rare doesnt have to worry.

  • @captain-coel Its supposed releasing in April of 2022

  • @smeedapirate I forgot to mention the suggestion forward placed canons on a ship! What happened to all my spacing between paragraphs? I am sorry.

  • Serious competition would be good for this game.

    It's healthy in general.

Content in this game is pretty solid and has a huge advantage over an up and comer but performance could see an improvement with some nipping at the heels.

  • @smeedapirate considering it lost its game director a month ago and in an earnings call they may be able to release the game sometime in 2022/2023 but nothing has been said from ubisoft officially when the release is. A game from the, would have a much longer advertising period than the what 2-3 months left before its may 2022. Again I am not concerned and I doubt Rare is as well.

  • First of all i dislike how you push game mechanics like "forward cannons" with a fear factor : "there is competition and you have to do this!". There are talks here why forward cannons are a bad idee, but you choose this way.

For me atm its not competition. I doesnt know enough about it.

The trailer gives me this points:

-it seems i am the captain of my ship. Like every player has s ship and you give commands

-there was a level indicater. If you show a level it means normaly how strong other players are. So does a ship get beefier the longer you play it.

-i saw a sloop got wrecked because a fort shot a volley of 10 canons at ones

-i see good grafic and many ships. I will need good hardware to play it.

Seems (from a 2min. Trailor) as a shooter, where you are playing a ship. And seems very different from SoT. Let see whst they will publish at the end.

  • @smeedapirate you talk about Skull&Bones? Are you kidding? The only thing, those two games have in common is the pirate setting...it's like comparing Halo and Halo Wars, 2 completely different games

  • @smeedapirate

If you are talking about skull and bones, there is some key differences between them like @schwammlgott stated actually there is more differences then comparisons.

second of all that game has been in development hell longer then Sea of Thieves has been released

    • It was originally called Black Flag infinite, a spinoff to AC Black Flag and started development in 2013
    • the game has undergone multiple changes in direction and scope during development, exceeding its budget multiple times.
    • Gameplay was redesigned multiple times, focusing variously on naval exploration and ship-to-ship combat, before both were scrapped in favour of land-based survival elements inspired by games like Rust.
    • Originally set to be released in Q3/Q4 2018, then delayed to 2019 and again somewhere in 2020 then it was delayed to 2021/22 and now it has been pushed back to the 2022/23 fiscal year.
    • In September 2020, it was revealed that, while development was continuing, a "new vision" for the game had emerged,
and go to the "Development and release" section

I wouldnt hold my breath for this one

Why should 2 Order of Souls emissaries become allies ? They are out for the same thing: skulls. If I run the OoS flag, another OoS crew is competition and they might have a nice set of skulls laying around that I could sell for twice its value, even 2.5 its value when I get my grade up by stealing them.

  • @smeedapirate All of the answers above me are all valid and cover most of everything I would say, other than none of these are new ideas.

    • Bounty system would just incentivise PVP more than Reapers and portal-hopping already has and tip the PvEvP balance.
    • There are, as you say, already ghost gally voyages, with skeleton ships, like Meg, already an emergent encounter - don't need more
    • The whole balance of the game relies on there being no levels - there should never be a difference in how ships behave. Period.
    • The Alliance system is fine
    • I don't even understand the last point...
  • yawn.....

  • April 2022 LOL I'll eat my shoe if that happens.

I don't think there's any details on their most recent "new vision"...but I reckon that game will have very few similarities to SOT outside of a pirate theme.

  • As others have stated - the only similarities between the two games are they involve pirates.

Rare won't be sweating about it and to be honest, using that as a disguise to try and push your agenda of changes is baffling - if you want to suggest changes, then just suggest changes - there can be a discussion surrounding them. No need to sensationalise a 'threat' of competition to try and validate your points.

    To your points:

    • Bounty Systems have been discussed many times on the forum - usually with a comparison to the GTA V system. How would you suggest it is implemented? Can you just place a bounty on anyone or do they have to sink you first? Would the player with a bounty be notified? If so why couldn't they just portal hop to rid them of it?

    • Given the access to Ghost Ship voyages and the frequency of emergance encounters of Skelly ships (including the ones that are randomly partolling the seas) I don't feel you need to have a voyage to find them - just use your eyes....

    • Each ship currently has their pro's/con's - by adjusting the type of ship you can get at each size, you will find that there will be an OP ship in each category as it would be impossible to balance - hence the same ships would just be used....also if it ain't broke why fix it??

    • Why would I want other emissaries to see where I was? Surely if they are the same emissary, they want to come and sink me because I've done the hard work of collecting the loot for them to cash in at the higher value?? The alliance system is fine the way it is - random encouters.

    • How would you even implement your last point? By the time you'd decided on a percentage and proposed that to the other crew (not even sure how that message would be sent...) any competent crew would have enough holes in your ship to sink it.....Loot isn't yours till you cash it in - if you don't want to lose 2 hours worth of time then learn to be better at PvP - that's what I've done, that's what a lot of players have done.

  • @smeedapirate

I think it would be good for Sea of Thieves ultimately to have a serious competitor but I can promise you Skull and Bones isn't it lol.

There is no end in sight for the development hell in which that game resides.

  • Bring back time limited items or just allow players get one of theyre own choice for anniversary and i think i know for which game ur talkin since my friend works for that scooby company

  • There is a danger here to Rare losing its player base of Sea of Thieves Players if Rare does not take this threat seriously

That could be said about every game out there. But in the end they all do fine.

Why isn’t there a bounty system for players
The more you sink other players ships or kill other players would each time raise your bounty.

Abusive system against new and young players vs Vet and toxic players.

The Order of Souls should offer voyages that require you to seek out Skeleton Ships

We kind of do this, but in the form of "phantom ships"

existing ships with either having more hull durability, firepower, or speed.

and I can tell you people would prefer Firepower over anything else...

emissary flag that those flying the same emissary flag should automatically be added as your ally on the map and should be able to see their where-abouts.

Similar to Reapers, they Hunt each other. Or Reaper wannabe uses this to quickly locate other ships before popping the Reaper Flag.

mechanic for when players attack other player’s they may offer a percentage of their plunder to them as a means to deter another ship from sinking their ship.

and nobody will take up the offer unless its 100%. All or sink.

nothing more depressing than losing everything you just worked for two hours playing the game.

People with actual problems would say other wise. Two hours, you should be selling "Often" more. Dont Hoard.

That takes the wind out of anybody’s sails to want to keep playing.

Everything this game offers takes the wind out of people. Even simply joining the game and not finding a world event they want, Not seeing any Reapers to hunt on map, and being attacked by a kraken as you leave a Fort. (tho doesnt happen anymore)

  • @smeedapirate said in Suggestions to Rare's SOT as to not to lose players to up and coming rival Pirate Game from major Competitor Game Company:

@captain-coel Its supposed releasing in April of 2022

We’ll see when it ends up releasing. Atlas was supposed to be a Sea of Thieves killer but that didn’t happen.

  • It looks like it’s gonna be cheap, the mechanics and story cannot compete with sea of thieves.
