Why are people sailing solo/duo on bigger ships?

  • It's ticking me off. What's the point? Me and my crew do mostly pvp and use pve as a way to move around the map, and offen we've been encountering 1 man brigs and 1/2 man galleons.

Do people think they will avoid pvp by getting on a bigger ship? Haha. The bigger the ship, the more excited pvp players get. But then we get there, it's 1 guy on board and it's not even a challenge, obviously.

And to top it off, we've had 2 separate people playing solo brig, who complained that we "shouldn't sink them because they're playing solo, got no loot, and it's not fair". This needs to stop. First off, me and my crew aren't psychic, we can't predict how many people are on a ship, and OBVIOUSLY we assume there's 3 players on a brig, or 4 on a galleon, as it should be most of the time. Secondly, you can't complain of people sinking you if you're actively screwing yourself by getting solo on a bigger ship and then not being able to manage it. In fact, you shouldn't complain about sinking ever. And thirdly, i don't care if you have loot on board or not. You don't have to have loot for me to sink you. It's a PVPVE game. Get used to it.

I hope this silly trend stops.

  • Brig is faster than a sloop and easily managed solo when not directly engaging in PVP.

Galleons are great for the intimidation factor when simply sailing around and trying to fish. You will most likely be avoided by others as PVP isn't the majority of the playerbase.

I managed to outsail a fully crewed Brig while solo on a Galleon, so it isn't always a requirement to be fully crewed.

  • go play another game matey, pirates will play as they please an' not how you want 'em to.

  • @cpt-lungz Your entire post is about how you want to play the game and people shouldn't complain about you PvPing.... yet you are complaining that people want to play on a bigger ship....

I am all for PvP, but you can't dictate how people play.

  • @el-dth-taco wrong. I asked why people do this. I didn't tell people how to play. And i explained why you shouldn't complain about people sinking you in a pirate game.
@archangel-timmy I know it isn't a requirement. The option is there, it's not against the rules. I'm talking about getting on a bigger ship and THEN complaining people attack you and you can't defend yourself. That's silly.
@AwesomecoreUSA you missed the point. I never told people how to play, i said you shouldn't complain about your ship sinking if you play on a bigger ship with no crew, because that's on you.

  • @cpt-lungz You said they are complaining about the way you are playing the game... Yet you are complaining about how they play the game....

You shouldn't complain about how they play it because maybe they want to try something new. You can't judge, its a sandbox game people can play HOW THEY WANT to.

  • ... I choose my ship size at my discretion, @Cpt-Lungz, it's just me, my will and the sea.
OK, and the Kraken. (Someone shouts "The Megalodon?!)".
OK, let's add this one. The Kraken, the Megalodon. (Someone shouts "What about the battles? They skale, don't they?")
OK, and some battles will be harder...
Although you may think it's a bad idea to choose a bigger ship if you can't man it, it's still my own bad idea and beyond your judgment.

  • Complaining about complaining...

    Always a good time! 😂

  • @little-squash @Cpt-Lungz
Ah, come on, he's essentially right, all that salt, sometimes people act like NPCs and then complain why I could have been so mean to sink them.... Because I could and just didn't come up with the idea of throwing flowers at them. You don't have to make a forum post about it, but it's not bad, too and here's the discussion corner, where else can you discuss it? All good for me.
    +1, finally

  • You cant dictate how other people choose to play. Your complaint is your expectations of how others should do things so really if you cant find good pvp try the arena.

  • @cpt-lungz you are complaining about not finding the pvp you want because of how others are playing

  • @cpt-lungz

My friend and I used to 2 man brig as doing skull forts was easier we found (this is back when people did forts:

    A) Since the majority of ships appear to be sloops (nowadays I go 'Wow! A galleon, back in my day there were so many of those...') people in sloops had a tendency to go to a fort, see a brig and decide it was not worth it (I for one never understood that mentality)..

    B) When a ship was approaching you, you wanted - needed - two cannons active on the same side (something the sloop couldn't offer) and you could tell when someone was boarding by ladder more easily from the back of the ship (and thus get in better positions for when they got to the top).

    C) Loot was easier to store safely and yet access quickly (front of the boat).

    D) My ships cosmetics looked better.

    E) Having a bigger ship was compensation for something my friend lacked...

    obviously better gun skills

  • @cpt-lungz aye with the solo on the bigger ships

  • @goedecke-michel
Sure, but the post could have been made much differently simply by asking why people might sail solo on a bigger ship knowing that it can be more difficult to survive PvP and PvE battles.

Complaining about complaining about being sunk is a non-issue and doesn't really have anything to do with the size of the ship.

  • It’s the Random Crews!

Ships floating around the servers with people constantly spawning and quitting. Most likely trying to find random crews with Mics or doing something they want to do.

I’m telling you guys - they need to add Info in the Menu or Load Screen about the XBOX LFG Tool!

I can’t say enough good things about it when it comes to SOT’s (ITS THE ONLY GAME I use it on)

  • @glannigan aye me too because this is the only game I have

  • A great thread to eat popcorn to. I solo on a brig lots, come at me.
I do it because i like the brig design, there is space for friends to join if they come online and because its fast so you have a better chance of escaping from other brigs than if i were in a sloop.
    Tools not rules buddy .

  • @el-dth-taco again, i'll repeat it. For the last time. I'm complaining about the lack of logic of telling me and my crew we are wrong for attacking people when they are playing solo on a big ship. That's not my fault or my crews, it's their fault. I'm not saying they shouldn't play that way, it's up to the individual. I'm saying they have no moral ground to complain to me and insult my crew when they are the ones who got into that situation.

  • @goedecke-michel you didn't get my point, like most people here. Probably the way i worded it. It's your choice what ship you choose, but don't complain to ME when i sink you because you can't defend yourself.

  • I'll try to word this differently since most people aren't really getting the point and are insistent on making it look like i hate soloing big ships. I myself do duo brig a lot of times, especially when i'm waiting for another crewmate.

What i'm trying to understand why is people cry, insult, and threaten to report because they got outnumbered for picking a bigger ship. I'm saying they should be aware of the disadvantages first hand, before going bat crazy on my crew.

  • @cpt-lungz
I doubt it actually has anything to do with the size of their ship. Complainers gonna complain. Excuses are quick to come by when being sunk on the Sea of Thieves.

  • @little-squash Yeah squash.. those darn PC Players ;)
    Always the best excuse.
Oh..and the black screens coughSSDcough LOL.
Catch you on the seas mate!

  • @cpt-lungz said in Why are people sailing solo/duo on bigger ships?:

Your primary question was why people solo larger ships, and that is what I answered. I didn't directly answer your final question because I didn't feel it needed an answer as you kind of covered all of the points with the fact that people shouldn't complain regardless of what ship they are on.

Only thing I have to add is I would classify this as a PvEvP rather than PvPvE as the vE is primary in this game and vP is secondary :o

Also, when you edit your post and add others via the @, we don't get notified it seems.

  • @iisrgntwolfii
Hey, I just feel bad for you, needing to survive without me while I stare at that black screen after catching a mermaid! I can certainly hear you flailing around helplessly without me...

But you'll be happy to know I did finally break down and purchase a SSD so that's one less thing for me to complain about.

Edit: Also just because I complain about something silly and insignificant in the middle of a game doesn't mean I'm going to come on the forums and complain about it... Or better yet, complain about other players' complaints. The seas are filled with salt... Best to leave it there!

  • If it ticks off PvP griefers, I now have even more reason to pick a galleon solo :)

  • I don't think that this is a trend? And it's almost certainly not done to "annoy" PvPers? At least, not by me.

I will sometimes Solo the Brigantine because it's top speed is a gift for certain missions. I've sailed the Galleon a few times Solo for the fun/challenge. But that's not a real viable option Solo like the Sloop or Brigantine are.

Don't count on this "trend" going anywhere soon. So expect to remain in a permanent state of "ticked off". And don't count on catching me either when I'm in a Brigantine :)

  • I sail solo on brig sometimes because sloop is just too slow for voyages, pvp, reapers chest, etc. If the challenge of sinking solo ships isn't thrilling enough, try a solo ship yourself or a sloop. The bigger the crew, the easier the PVP as you've said.

I also like to start out my sailing solo to get voyages started / supplies so that when others join, they know exactly what I am working on. Most of the time, friends will get on later than I do so I like to have a boat ready to go. Occasionally, I fill the empty slots when I need to do some PVP.

You aren't wrong that people shouldn't complain about being attacked while sailing solo. Rather, you should consider allying with them instead if they look to be productive since the thrill of the kill isn't really cutting it for you when they are alone. By allying with them, you can keep an eye on what they are doing from the map table then betray them later esp. if they pick up a reapers chest.

  • @cpt-lungz said in Why are people sailing solo/duo on bigger ships?:

What i'm trying to understand why is people cry, insult, and threaten to report because they got outnumbered for picking a bigger ship.

Oh, well that has nothing to do with what ship they're on. People who complain about just being sunk will always complain.

The kind of ship was just the excuse o' the moment.

Best advice I can give is the same one I give to PvEers who encounter genuine jerks; just ignore 'em. Don't let them sour your experience.

  • we normaly use a brig solo or with two players because it´s faster and still easy to use.

@Hellbudgie and me even use a Galleon with only the two of us and chased a 4 man Galleon that try to outrun us for 30 minutes and we were able to keep up to them xD

  • I start a bigger ship so there is room for friends to join. Pretty great for training new players and having a crew spot to let a random join and help out if needed as well.

  • A lot of the time it's either:

    1. An open-crew waiting for others to join.
    2. A closed crew waiting on friends to join.
    3. A solo pirate or small crew looking for a bigger challenge.
    4. A solo pirate or small crew looking to appear bigger/scarier than they really are.
    5. A crew with a troll or trolls with one or some crew placed in the brig or AFK on the FotD.
    6. One or some crew is off the ship exploring, resupplying, etc. while the remainder continue to sail the ship.

I hope that suitably answers your question. Also, it's not a silly trend - it's just how the game was designed. You're also a little too emotional for something that's not really all that important - if you're out to sink them, regardless of their situation, why do you even listen to them? Just put them out of their misery and move on. Let them learn from their mistakes. In other words, don't sweat the small stuff - there's not enough salt in the sea for that. 😉

  • When my crew are done with their adventures for the night, 2 or 3 of us might stay on our Galleon looking to continue our adventure, purely because we might have cursed cannonballs aboard to use on other ships, plenty of food and lots of ambition for taking on the seas.

  • @cpt-lungz I don't really get the point either...playing solo a brig? Yes you can handle it solo, but not really efficient...and in fight you're done
Sloop is a solo ship for me, Brig is for 2-3 people and galleon 4 people, playing with less peoole then that is senseless in my opinion...

  • @cpt-lungz sagte in Why are people sailing solo/duo on bigger ships?:

@goedecke-michel you didn't get my point, like most people here. Probably the way i worded it. It's your choice what ship you choose, but don't complain to ME when i sink you because you can't defend yourself.

And you missed my second post, dude :)

  • I only do solo on larger ships when the random crews don't work (come and go), friends go before I've reached my daily goals, or expected friends miss out on participation. If I am in such a situation in a mission that I want to finish, then I will continue to play. But then I won't complain if I'm picked like an overripe fruit on a tree.
