New Faction Progression – Part 1: Hunter’s Call

  • The three original factions in the Sea of Thieves are Gold Hoarders, Order of Souls, and Merchant Alliance. A player may progress in each of these factions by paying a certain amount of gold to the specific faction every five levels. With this payment, the player receives a new title, a cosmetic item, and higher level voyages.

Now, two new factions have been added to the Sea of Thieves: Hunter’s Call and Sea Dogs (Arena). These factions follow a similar progression in which players may pay gold to the specific faction every five levels and receive a new title and a cosmetic item. However, they do not provide corresponding higher level voyages.

In my opinion, this is a missed opportunity that provides a means of removing some of the frustration that is associated with these new factions. Part 1 is to discuss the Hunter’s Call. (Part 2, discussing Sea Dogs can be found here: https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/94154/new-faction-progression-part-2-sea-dogs)

A possible change to the Hunter’s Call could be to increase the chances to catch rare and trophy fish as you increase your level with that faction. However, to balance this, reeling in rare and trophy fish could be more difficult. Without changing how the reeling process works, an increase in difficulty could include more changes in direction with less time to react to the change in direction.

Another possible change to the Hunter’s Call could be to make bait more effective at catching the appropriate fish as you increase your level with that faction. For example, as your faction level increases, if you cast an earthworm in the Wilds, your chance of a wildsplash appearing will increase and your chance of a splashtail appearing will decrease.

I think these changes will help with some of the frustrations that are apparent with the Hunter's Call faction in addition to helping the progression work more like the original three factions.

  • Definitely agree that tuning down splashtails would be a better fishing experience
