Royal Navy Fleet & Bounties

  • Hello!

I was talking with a few people the other day about how bounties could be implemented in this game, as they are quite monumental when it comes to pirates.

The result of the chat was to create some sort of Royal Navy Fleet, much like how skeleton ships operate, they spawn and will retaliate once engaged by pirates. The Royal Navy will obviously wish to control the Sea of Thieves, and are regularly posting bounties on pirates that have sunk their ships and stolen the Royal Navy's troves in the various free-trade outposts around SoT. The bounties could be seen as a highscore of sorts for the pirates, but if you were to get sunk and captured [DEAD OR ALIVE], the Royal Navy will reward your captor handsomely. A high bounty could also increase the chance of stronger Navy ships attacking you.

The ideas are inspired from history, and certain shows like Black Sails, and Pirates of the Caribbean. Some sort of powerful state enemy would really liven it up, while finally bringing us bounties in a fair and logical manner!

    Thoughts?

  • It would be kind of cool. Although It'd ruin the isolated in pirate purgatory sort of feel the game has now. All the enemies being skeletons, no way of escape, all that jazz.

That being said I wouldn't say no to some sort of NPC based merchant navy. Moving trade goods and other supplies around isle to isle. Just waiting to be looted by a daring pirate. Of course they'd have armed escorts depending on cargo haul.

Maybe allow players to put bounty's on each others heads as well. Have a contact desk on the ghost ship. Allowing for easy bounty placement once someone has killed you.

  • The reason for a Royal Navy is because pirates don't place bounties, the navy does. Pirates are free souls out to plunder and kill, while the Navy will try to crack down on them. Also, if players started putting bounties on anyone that killed them, for whatever a bounty could entail, I'm sure it will be abused.
Pirates sort of originate from sailors who wanted to get away from the reach of the government and do whatever illegal activities they wanted.

I heard that the devs played around with the idea of bounties before which they were unhappy with, but I think this would be one of the more feasible ways to implement them. After all, bounties are kind of essential! Thanks for the ideas :D
