Merchant Ships

  • Hey everyone! After the addition of randomly spawning skelly ships with their treasure, I've come to think about the ways that this system could be evolved.

    What about merchant ships that spawn randomly around the world, sailing between ports and/or islands, and carrying some trade goods like satin/rum/plant crates, animals or banana crates? So either something players could use on their ventures or sell to merchants.

    It would be awesome to be able to hunt those ships down like real pirates, steal all that's aboard and sell the stuff for gold, or maybe even trade with those merchant ships at sea or at a port.

    To make things harder they could either protect themselves with cannons or be escorted by armed ships. It would be cool to have some variation, though, as for example skeleton ships are almost impossible to solo and I think everyone should get a chance at some merchant's loot. You could also combine this with a "reaper's mark effect" so that ships that have sunken a merchant ship will be visible to other players on the map.

    In my opinion, this would break some of the monotony of sailing around and being attacked by hostile players or skeletons.

  • I love this idea and was thinking about posting something! But this, of course, has been brought up before on the suggestions haha. Which I think you should go up vote and comment on! I think these ships should also have a sort of body guard ship depending on the loot, or just to make it easier for the devs have the "merchants" do combat. I believe I have seen or heard something about this from the devs which I will look for. Keep up the ideas! Have fun and happy sailing :D

    While this isn't a new idea and it hass been suggested before it was never really stood on it's own and more apart of larger idea's. I hope to see you expand on this topic further. Perhaps with some unique loot idea's and mechanic. As well as a more outline prisoner system.

    The only 2 issues with these ideas are the technical limitation on the number of ships we can have active in a session as they take up alot of resources and the A.I. which would require alot of programing having to deal with so many random variables. Other then that it's a solid idea.

  • We already have tons of merchant NPC ships that dislike pvp and want the game to be friendly and inclusive - the pve players. :P

    Personally I think it's pointless to add in such feature. The Skeleton ships are good enough. Instead the merchant voyages should be expanded so that the players can be more merchant like and other players more pirate like when robbing them.
