Instead of a streamer mode option where you remove the gamertag, can we finally add and option(al) to add symbols above players instead of names?

Much like WoW, let the player pick between pirate themed icons that hover above their head.

Your own crew members would have green icons, like the name colors are today, red icons for all other players not on your crew, and blue icons for alliance players.

It’s a cleaner look, it allows you to quickly identify enemies or allies, and you can possibly make the icons part of the cosmetic reward system.

This would also solve the Streamer mode request.
Also, with competitive Arena coming up, it really would be a better fit to have icons over enemy players vs BubbaLove45679021

These are the WoW Raid icons, as an example. Think Pirate type alternatives...

Again, if I wasn't clear...this would be a optional setting you could toggle to your liking, not a replacement.
Here is a mock-up:

The Green icon in the example above are players on your crew, the Red icon 'could' be a player that HAS attacked your crew, and the blue icon could be anyone BUT your crew. Or simply have the blue or red as anyone other than your crew. Later it could expand to allow choice on what icons to show for your crew and other players not on your crew.

We impact what gets implemented, we debate.

Rare: “ a lot of players are requesting this, let’s move that to top priority”

If you have one side your crew, and on the other side every pirate has the exact same icon. I wouldn’t argue. Doesn’t matter if that crew is hostile or not, the icons should never change.

My point: one marker that never changes

Your point: multiple markers that change based on the actions of the crew.

This is where we butt heads.

Listen, it’s a feedback and suggestion forum, not a debate forum. We are not the design team at Rare.

I provided a suggestion with visuals for a immediate need(stream sniping) and a better solution, icons that identify your crew and other crews.

It’s simple and clean. My crew gets green icons, everyone else the my crew sees is ONE globally different color. Like today, we get green and white, done. Why is that so hard to grasp? Of you want me to remove the red X example from my picture, I can.

Uberkull

Reply to Watched live stream, and as far as Streamer mode and Gamertags... on Wed, 09 Jan 2019 23:17:31 GMT

@uberkull

Again, weather you mark them or the game itself. Having the marks change depending on the actions of the crew. Nor do I like the idea of “crew 1 is triangle, crew two is square, crew 3 is circle.” Each crew is clearly different.

What I am implying is “ crew 1 is white downward triangle, crew 2 is white downward triangle, crew 3 is white downward triangle” if you are on crew one then crew 2 and 3 will have the same marks, weather crew 2 attacked or not. All players on your crew is green triangle. Crew three is in my alliance, but because everyone has the same marker it will be hard to determine which is friend or foe.

If crew 2 attacks and the game changed their marker to red X, you will automatically know if the player on your ladder is friend or foe. That is what I dislike. Markers changing based on the actions of the crew.

Is stubborn or bias as it is, I am giving you a pvp oriented mentality. Where as your idea hints towards pve or quickly determining. The reason they add this is that the streamer attacks a ship, you can see the players tag. You add that player, you join the boat. Now you are on the server with the streamer. As nice of an idea as it is, I dislike it. There also wouldn’t be a reason for different markers on your own crew. You wouldn’t be able to tell what is above your head. Assuming that if you dance it will disappear. So someone callin our to you “ square what is your location?” You might not recognize they are calling out to you.

I am also basing this off current alliance - which I like purely for the fact that while in an alliance their names are also white. If their names were changed to blue, signaling alliance members, you’d spot the imposter among the ranks.

Also if you haven’t noticed, each server only holds a maximum of six player ships. So the idea of marking players is silly. It’s not like atlas where you can have thousand of people cluttered in one spot. If more ships can on the server, which implies more people. I’d be more willing to work out something. But still at this time, you rarely have a full server. Maybe three or four ships, but even then you can kinda guess who is evil. “ that kraken hull and sail ship sloop attacked me. They are evil”

I offered the option that the game decides to identify players that have attacked you with an X icon.

Again, that is above and beyond the basic ask. Just allow us to get rid of the awful gamertags hovering over heads and replace them with good visual icons that quickly identify anyone else but your crew.

Uberkull

Reply to Watched live stream, and as far as Streamer mode and Gamertags... on Wed, 09 Jan 2019 22:34:13 GMT

@uberkull

Again, rereading your original post.

“ x is used as a marker for those who have attacked your crew” this is implying placing a marker on a crew that is outside your own. Which you have said later “is not the purpose” if you are unable to shoot first and ask questions later, and they sink you. Sorry =)

At the same time typically after you kill the same ship twice, weather they started the engagement or not, they usually leave the server any ways. That or they try once, fail and leave.

My point to you, as bias or stubborn as it is. “ rare if you allow me to mark a player as ‘X’ I’ll know well in advance if it’s friendly or foe. If that player doesn’t decide to attack my ship but instead try’s to hide anywhere on my ship, I’ll know his intentions. Via a previous encounter. You shouldn’t know the intentions of the other crews, that you face. It’s not like WoW where all marked are critical opponents I.e. healers, which need to be focused.

From your post I also assumed you ment “ hey a player is in the water, normally I wouldn’t see his gamer tag, but now I see triangle. My crew.

If they did random generator, two players could possible get a similar name.

As a final note, I wouldn’t ge opposed to “ remove gamer tag, and replace it with the same marker.” I dislike the idea of having the ability to choose which marker you want. If all players outside your own crew was a white triangle,(this is a player not in your crew), which you can not change. I’d be perfectly fine with that. But the idea interchanging icons or marking players, I dislike.

I do see your point on call-outs. We might need to add numbers on the Green icons, 1-4, or allow for different type of green icons...your crew is Green triangle, Green square, Green circle, Green diamond.

So, I know people have hate on WoW, but again this is just an example below..

As most may have experienced in Raids, you have call-outs like...'Everyone gather on Red' or 'Everyone move to Green Tank'.

In SOT, if you need to call out, and you don't know all your crew members gamertag names or forget in the heat of battle who that UFxxfeoperTopper23455 player is...just say Green Square please raise sails.

Callouts are not as crucial in SOT at a person by person level. You can surly get by with, please raise sails, or man cannons, and hopefully some competent soul will do the job.

You really don’t understand the solution and what’s it's trying to solve. Watch the Rare stream first off and understand what they want to do for Streamer mode, then come back.

But, if you don't want to watch the Rare dev stream, i'll summarize the ask by Streamers and expand on what my solution offers.

Streamers are trying to avoid getting 'Stream Sniped'. This happens because other players watching the stream can see the ALL player's gamertag on stream. Then can either alert the players (through xbox live msg) getting attacked where the attackers are, or where they are hiding. Simple, red and green icons above players heads would solve this.

Quickly identifying other players NOT on your crew is easier with clear icons. This is why most all pvp games offer icons only as a player identifier.

Again, if I wasn't clear...this would be a optional setting you could toggle to your liking, not a replacement.

In this way these changes are only applied to the Stream and not the actual Game Output.
As these differences visible to the Player would somewhat break the immersive element, but also just be quite out-of-place... part of the "Fun" is that you can't always tell where people are, if they're on your "Side", etc.

Yet, from an Audience (Streaming) perspective I can see how this can make the game difficult to follow unless you also happen to play it often and are used to the various cues.

So by integrating the Streaming / VOD systems that allow the output for an Audience to be Tailored for better visibility would be good., just like having your Stream Chat pipelined into the In-Game Chat.

I mean like it or not., Streaming has become a big part of Gaming Culture, Marketing, etc. so... really there is an argument to be made that built-in support for such that just improves the game readability and audience interaction is something more Developers should probably be thinking about as "Core" Checklist Features.

You are missing the point. I’m fine with no Alliance color, just your crew and all others.

Part of this is to solve streamer mode that shows no names but still shows your crew vs everyone else. Other part, easy to identify bad guys quickly, at a glimpse. Pretty much every other pvp game goes with icons in BGs, and the upcoming Arena could benefot from this.

I think I suggested this in beta and got shot down. My view there was more around immersion breaking. Nametags really take away from the beauty of the game. A small, subtle icon should be enough.
