Absolutely pointless alliance betrayal

  • I've been victim to many betrayals throughout my time playing Sea of Thieves, most of them happening with alliance members at skull forts.

They often sink my ship and kill me (and any crew mates I may have), and take the loot to an outpost.

This time was super weird however. So weird that it was literally pointless for them to do, because it wasted both our time and possibly lost them their ship with all its resources. What happened was, me (playing solo on a closed crew, after getting tires of countless random noobs) and another sloop joined alliance after they showed up at the fort as I was dealing with it. When we killed the boss the other guys opened the door and started taking everything out. No one blew up a gunpowder barrel or anything.

We placed EVERYTHING on their ship. They sail away while I'm going through the fort looking for any lose gunpowder barrels and resources I could collect. When I get back to my ship I see it swimming away full speed. I take the mermaid and find it empty, so I drop anchor.

While re-positioning to head where they were going, I notice they tried blowing it up with the barrels I had. They dropped most of them from the crow's nest, onto the mast and one on the deck. I think the guy accidentally fell off the ship and didn't get to shoot the barrels.

When swimming away the guy (or his friend) left the alliance, meaning I would get [Mod edited] from all that loot. So since I wasn't going to get anything, I thought I might as well get some payback. I went to Plunder Outpost where they went. I see their ship docked, sails up. I drop anchor next to it, grab a gunpowder barrel and blow it up on their ship.

One of them returned at that point and started shooting at me, so the next barrel I just put under the ship, underwater. It unfortunately killed me, and when I respawned they have already filled the ship below deck with my barrels, I tried taking the closest one and running out of the ship with it, but someone managed to shoot me and they all blew up. By the time I respawned I was already far away on a new island with a new ship.

Here's the reason why this betrayal was absolutely pointless for those of you who aren't as experienced. When you're in an alliance, you get 100% gold for whatever you sell, and whoever is in an alliance gets 50% on top of that. So there's no split in profit. They would've still gotten the full 100% if they didn't betray me, and I would've gotten 50% on top of their profits.

If anyone here is well educated in psychology, could you please explain to me what is wrong with their brains, or what was going through their heads to do this?

  • @denisowator hello matey. Sorry you missed out on that loot, and that you didn’t quite manage to avenge their betrayal (kudos for trying though). I can’t see there being any rhyme or reason to their actions, everyone is free to play how they feel, within the code of course.

I can only guess they just wanted to be a little bit more pirate!

Chin up matey. There’s plenty more loot in the sea!

  • @denisowator Aarrgghh matey! Sorry to hear your tale of woe. Such betrayal is hard to swallow. Who knows what goes through the foetid minds of such scurvy dogs as those blaggards? Take heart though me fine matey as the seas are full of decent fellowes who would never betray any member of their hearty crew. Keep your eyes peeled for me on the high seas, I would welcome a shipmate such as your fine self on any adventure. May fair winds guide you to gilded shores.

  • Yeah i dont understand such players.. if i solo a fort and one allies to help i too let them turn the loot in and prevent fighting over it. They get 100% and i get a extra 50% its a good deal but ill escort them to outpost make sure to defend them from kraken meg etc.

Most are happy and keep ally but yes sometimes they start a fight for nothing extra i dont get it

  • Hello Mr Denisowator , Mighty Voice of the Sea...You know , people will always be people. Some simply don't want to share. The game also allows you to forge an Alliance and like in the Pirateworld ,described in so many stories ,leave the opening to betray the Alliance...It depends on with what person you play. You have people that forge an Alliance and stay loyal untill one or both ships go to sleep and others that just use an Alliance and use the people to beat the Fortress and then blow all the bridges and leave the scene with treasures they don't want to share...i always compare this with a cyclist that stays hanging in the groups ' wheel ,letting other people waste energy in closing gaps and then , when everybody is tires and needs a breather , breaks away and wins the race...It is called in my country : " First eat everybody's plate up and then start on yer own dish"....

It is sad , but it is no cheating, it's betrayal , but you have to put yourself over such behaviour...It is not fun and if it may happen too much, i can break your will to play but one thing Mr Denisowator: do NOT take this personal, it happens to all of us and please , don't let it kill your will or wish to play...There are a lot of different Pirates roaming around the Sea , you just need some luck to find them...And , be honest , when betrayed you play with a kind of tenacity , that you don't use when everybody keeps his/her promise...This is not making advertisement for betrayal , i just try to let you see something positive in those things before you get " burned up" from this game for this kind of behaviour...Betrayal is not fun, but is a part of the game...But there are also Pirates that stick to their word untill the evening has ended...Take care , mate.

  • @clumsy-george What happened is they played a pirate role in a pirate game. What's silly about anything here it's that alliances create money for the secondary parties involved. Personally I don't think alliances should be a part of this game at all; but, they are here to stay. Loot should at the least not be a 75%-25% split.

  • im going to be honest i tried to betray my alliance of another solo sloop because after the fort they took most of the loot but it backfired and we both lost all the loot so i guess it was a lose lose :(
