What if in a later update the ferryman actually says around the sea for a few game hours at night? Dead pirates could see the world around the but other pirates can't interact with the ferry. Then before dawn it goes back down into the depth.

The addition of actual ghost ships that only appear at night, in stormy or foggy conditions and if you can catch it and board it, you can steal it's treasure. The trick is, it's only for a short period of time then it disappears beneath the waves and if you don't get off in time, you go down with it and have to respawn. They would be extremely rare, like the Shrouded Ghost Meg.

Either that or you follow the ghost ship and when it disappears beneath the waves, it becomes a shipwreck and you have a limited amount of time to dive on it.

And add a little more something to sailing at night for other pirates to see glimpse of the ferry sailing around.

Perhaps the Ferry could sail the Sea of Sorrow as it normally does, but in the night you could see it sailing, passing through anything which goes to it. The pirates on board would see glimpses of the Sea of Sorrow through the fog when they die.
