Not sure if this info is useful to others, but with the introduction of cargo runs I figured out that the name of the NPC will always have the same first letter, depending on their role... so:
"S" for shipwright
"W" for weapons
"C" for clothes
"T" for tools/equipment
"M" for Merchant
"H" for Gold Hoarder
"O" for Order of Souls
"T" (female name) for the barkeep in the tavernI'm sure others figured this out much earlier than I, lol...
