Is Level Locked Clothing In The Past?

  • When Sea of Thieves first released we were given the 3 main regions in the game: The Shores of Plenty, The ancient Isles, and The Wilds. Each region was given a specialty clothing set that would be unlocked starting at level 36 and so on. Moving forward with later updates we haven't had any clothing sets that follow this practice. So is level locking clothing a thing of the past?

In my person opinion I hope it is not. I hope there will be new variations to the high ranked gear for the regions beyond the Ceremonial Admiral, Royal Sovereign, and Rogue Sea Dog sets. When first starting it gave us a goal which was fulfilling to achieve in a game where what you wear is what shows your experience. Although the time limited and exclusive sets unlocked by commendations and events are nice, it doesn't hold the same appeal that players may have gotten unlocking that white coat for the first time.

I would love to hear your thoughts on this. Should new clothing sets be added and should they be level locked?

  • It's a bit frustrating that I can't get the Ceremonial Admiral sword to match my Grand Admiral set yet, since it's locked behind a rep barrier that requires quite a bit of grinding to reach in a reasonable amount of time.

I know we can unlock other bits of equipment after buying a promotion, but none of it really matches any of the other sets that you could buy instead.

Honestly, we need more rewards for leveling up in certain trading companies. Preferably we would add more trading companies first, so players have a variety of options when trying to reach Pirate Legend.

  • @blam320 Since cosmetics it this game's form of progression, or at least the visual confirmation that you garner some experience it makes sense that you work towards that sword. Otherwise what are we working towards beside Legend?

Which Set is available at which region?

  • @king-deka Ceremonial Admiral is Shore of Plenty, Royal Sovereign is Ancient Isles, and Rogue Sea Dog is The Wilds.

We didn’t get a sword to match several of the new sets, and since I prefer Cosmetics that match in some way, I find it annoying that the only other Admiral cutlass is level-locked.

  • @blam320 If you're talking about the Grand Admiral set there were items put in the game when those sets came out. Now I can't remember exactly whether or not a sword was included since I already had several I was using but I know that some items were taken out of the game because they were not visually unique enough to stand apart from the main line sets.

The Grand Admiral figurehead for example was taken out of the game for this exact reason. Only player that purchased them before it was wiped got to keep them.

You’re thinking of the Ceremonial Admiral set. The Grand Admiral set never had removed items.

  • @blam320 The Ceremonial Admiral set came first bud. The Grand and Executive Admiral sets came after. There were items removed.

And it was the Ceremonial Admiral figurehead that was removed, as was the Bilge Rat cutlass variant and a few other things. That was all well before Grand Admiral and the other sets were added.

  • @blam320 I could use the whole "I've been at this longer" line but instead I will just ask that you click on the link here that I have provided detailing the removal of said items https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/58464/sea-of-thieves-cosmetics-removal-may-22nd

    My mistake, then.

That doesn’t change the fact that level-locked cosmetics either don’t have a set of their own, or are the best option another, non-level-locked set has for completion.

  • @blam320 When it comes to the original 3 there is full theme customization ranging from the weapon skins, equipment, and ship decals. When (what I like to call) round 2 of the cosmetics were put it they attempted to do the same but realized some of the accompanying items didn't stand out enough.

But now if you look at the Forsaken Shore update (round 3), the Kraken set for example comes with the clothing items, equipment, weapon skins, and ship decals. These are not level locked. So I'm not completely sure what you're trying to say.

And I don't think you're understanding my point.

The Grand Admiral Sword may have been removed, yes, but that now leaves the Ceremonial Admiral Sword - which is level-locked - as the only sword option that best fits the set. I'd have no problems if there was a Grand Admiral Sword still in the game to complete the set, but there isn't, so I'm stuck with the stock Admiral sword or some other option that similarly doesn't match.

Maybe I'm being OCD, but I don't have enough cosmetics where I feel comfortable mixing and matching just yet.

  • @dcr-lt-kanada seems so... 😔
    Now is Commendation unlock.

  • @blam320 I'm sure you can find something that goes with it well enough until you gain the level to use the one you want.

  • @dcr-lt-kanada said in Is Level Locked Clothing In The Past?:

So is level locking clothing a thing of the past?

    Fingers crossed. =P

But seriously, it seems like they're going to go more "commendation-locked" from now on, which has it's pros and cons.

Personally, I'd rather just have all cosmetics available to buy whenever (except for Legend stuff, of course), but I understand the appeal others feel for unlockable rewards.

But yeah, it looks like most stuff will be unlocked through commendations. Though if they eventually add another trading company, we might get some new specialized gear to unlock with rep.

  • I kinda like that some cosmetics are locked to those who have taken part in certain events.

I think rank locked cosmetics are problematic because of the amount of grinding involved. Nobody wants to grind out 30 levels of a faction for one specific skin. If there were a load more cosmetics, so you unlocked one every level or two it'd be fine, but I think tying the cosmetics to commendations and moving away from rank locked cosmetics is probably a better solution right now.

  • I would rather have a mixture of commendation locked and reputation locked and just freely available. That way players are encouraged to do all parts of the game but also have stuff they can get right off the bat.

  • I personally dislike how all the jackets that they've released since launch are closed and/or waist length. I like the Sea dog jacket style but there's only that and the Rogue Sea Dog to choose from.

What also grinds my gears is the colour they chose for the Rogue Sea Dog Jacket. The boat, equipment and weapons are purple/green but the outfit isn't. It's so out of place!

A quick solve would be clothing dyes, I want a purple coat darn it!

Become pirate legend. Your purple coat problems are solved.

  • @featuringturtle

Become pirate legend. Your purple coat problems are solved.

Not solved, it's a closed jacket so I can't display my Tattoos or my scars.

    #RealPiratesDontWearShirts

EDIT - Also close to being a legend (48/50/39) with two legend players in my regular crew so I've seen all that content personally and I'm not really impressed save for the Ghost ship. The clothing is the low point for me in this game.

  • @karloss00 yeah they really need to work on their sleeveless and open shirted options.

Where's the Bilge rat waistcoat that Duke wears?

Where's the waistcoat that Sticher Jim wears?

Where are all the other coloured Bandanas?

Why give us all these tattoos and then hardly any options except for shirtless to show them off?

The fact that NPCs have these cosmetics means they are in the game. Why do all the work to create them and then not let players play dress up with them?

They clearly know how to produce shirts and jackets that can be used to show off your ink, they've just decided not to, and for reasons that I cannot understand.

They must know that a fat pirate in a long closed coat looks like Homer Simpson in a mumu, they see the stuff before we do. Yet when was the last time we got a shirt or a short open jacket for the more portly pirate?

People want options. Lately the cosmetics have all been the exact same style - long closed coat, no shirt. Colours and designs are different but it's the same style and that style looks awful on one particular body type.

I love my chubby corsair but if I'd known Rare were going to make it so that the majority of the cosmetic sets look terrible on him I'd have picked a slimmer model.
