I feel like when sea of theives started it was a grindy game with unrealistic goals that required alot of time. I enjoyed cashing in my last chest, skull, and animal to become legend. I felt genuinely happy and a sense of accomplishment. Now you can buy your way to legend. Smh. And you have people dropping Athenas for non legends. Whats the point of an exclusive club if everyones in it? Whats the point of having obscure commendations if everyone unlocks them? The game started as a long and crazy adventure. Now it just seems muddled and watered down. I dont care about other types of food and frankly the cursed cannonballs are fun but I dont need them. Ive lost my hunger and excitment to play SOT and that upsets me because its been my favorite game since it came out.

Just because someone uses Doubloons to gain some lvls doesn’t make them any less of a legit than you. I have been playing since launch just hit legend a few days ago and yes I used doubloons on merchant. I get it, you felt like you had to grind probably a lot harder maybe to get there, but what I chose to spend my doubloons on is my choice right? I saved since at least the throne event not buying any of the cosmetics in order to be able to finish out merchant when the time came, so I still put time and effort in the game just like you. Now, as for people being able to do Athena’s without being a legend, i’m fine with that. 1. They can’t enter the hideout without you 2. They can buy clothing, but can’t buy any of the ship customizations without first being legend. Also I think cursed cannonballs are nice added feature to the game, helps to mix things up and gives a variety, just like having different food etc. I mean people complained about the lack of content from release and here they are updating the game and adding things regularly, I welcome the changes keeps me interested in the game, because i can tell you this if the game was exactly the way it was at launch right now. I would’ve quit a long time ago.

:)

Reminds me of a time we backstabbed a Legend and 2 other boats at a Fort, took the key and ran. The whole time at the Skull Fort the legend was bragging in gamechat about this and that. While they were chasing us, i dropped off the back of our boat, anchored the one behind us and killed them. The Legend's boat was coming up behind them so I dropped off that boat to board his. Right about the time he said in gamechat " oh they anchored you" i dropped his anchor and killed him.

My point is , for some reason is was so much sweeter doing that to someone who was a Legend and bragging about it for the past 1.5 hours. Let people have their hard earned titles. It makes them better targets.

I think you may have the argument flipped.
The OP is saying that any PL that comes after the recent changes doesn't deserve the title...and feels that pre-update PLs are being cheated of their achievements and hard work.

Most of us are trying to point out that their achievements remain. Their hard work is noted.
However, We are also trying to point out that there are numerous others aspects of the game that carry more interest than such titles. IE. stories, adventure, lore, social interactions, fun imaginative world, etc.
We are simply highlighting that some of the player base doesn't see these achievements as THE reason to play this game and that they are just milestones that occur while the game is enjoyed.
That's really it.

Are there hiccups along the way, sure. Are there occasionally boring days on the seas, yes. But I have learned a couple of things. First, I am only doing Athena's if I feel up to it. Even then, I am not fixated on finishing it. I do really want that figurehead, but I know I will get there eventually. So I am not rushing it. In fact, when I first started doing them, we went out of our way to avoid PvP, skull forts or anything that would add time to our travels. We would even fully stock our boat (wasting 30-40 minutes of gaming time). But over the past couple of weeks, maybe even months, we have started to change it up daily. Generally we just ask ourselves, what do we want to do today. Heck, the past 2-3 days we have even said, we are not going to stock the boat like we have in the past. We would simply grab one run each on the outpost we spawned at, then grab supplies as we went along. No pressure. Part of the reason for this is I wanted to have less attachment to my boat. I don't want to avoid PvP because of the time spent stocking the boat. Which was genuinely the only reason we avoided it. That and possibly losing crates in the middle of an athena (of which we just order a ton of merchant quests first to get those crates, and leave the athena crates with the merchants if we end up needing them due to a lost ship).

I think many fail to see that SoT is not really an end game type of game. Yes there are goals that can be set and accomplished. But really it is a sandbox from which you can make new adventures. Just this past Saturday I was on a brig solo, I had loaded the ship with crates to fill up so when my friends got online we could put on a reapers flag and blast out some quick quests. I was in the middle of filling those crates when another ship that had its reaper flag on approached. So I started to slowly sail away. Then the message of doom "WE'RE FRIENDLY". I of course laughed at this, you are friendly with the reaper on, not buying it. The sloop continued to follow me, so I saw one of my assassin friends was online, you know the type, the guy that is great at PvP. So I messaged "PvP on the Sea?". He responded back that I had him at PvP and he was already joining. Sure enough a minute later he joins and jumps off ship in the direction of the other ship. After a few minutes we sink him. This became the first day I have ever spent that was almost all PvP. And none of it initiated by us. The sloop came back several times, and was sunk each time. Then after a quick stop to stock the ship, a galleon approached, and fire at us. Again, we go ahead and sink said galleon. Next the galleon and sloop return, this time they manage to sink us as my friend was on the galleon while I got knocked off our boat from a good cannon shot. We came back and sunk them both again. This was our day, with only being sunk the one time.

I didn't set out to make it a PvP day. But in the end it was a very fun day. Sunday, we ended up doing an athena. The day started out boring, but along the way we did get a chance to do some PvP and we had fun. But mostly, the fun was the people I was with. Being around them, laughing, cracking funny pirate jokes, just enjoying hanging out with them.

SoT really is a game that is as fun as you make it. SoT is just a sandbox that gives you tools to create the adventure. It is up to you what kind of adventure you want to have.

Double concur!
There's so much more to this game that seems to be overlooked when the tunnel vision of reaching that distant PL goal narrows the perspective.

Just sailing, scopin for whatever glint catches yer eye is so relaxing and appealing.
Setting the sails for a slow casual turn around an isle while muh mate drones on the gurdy....love it.
I miss the adventure that this game has where other games force your hand and limits choice.
There is never a single reason why any pirate MUST do anything specific in this game.
You can play for days and never even pull your sword.....I've done it.
In fact, most sessions the only reason I pull my sword is to get to\from the boat faster.
🤓

Very quickly I saw what this game had to offer and its GRIND was only going to feel like a burden if I made it my focus.
Instead, I've put my focus on finding friends and exploring the world for washed up treasure more than doing fetch quests.
I enjoy sunken ships like nothin else.

More times than I can count, I've pulled my ship to the dock...loaded with all that I've found and let whoever I ran into cash it in.....just for giggles.
More of a social experiment.

This I wholeheartedly solute. The game is only a grind if you are trying to get somewhere. If you enjoy sunken ships, PVP battles, a good chase, a little paranoia, a new weekly challenge, new stuff from time to time, making an unexpected friend, or whatever... this game is the best.

I love the random loot drop on strangers thing too. It's funny to watch them deliberate.

I was trying to explain to my wife what was being said in this post and I stumbled onto a fair analogy that really got me thinking.

Imagine retiring at age 64 and a few years later they change the age to something like 55.
Wow that would hurt!
With it in that context, it takes on a whole nother level.

This would only hurt if your satisfaction for retiring at 65 was derived in comparison to someone else. If you retired at 65 (or 55) and enjoyed it because you were now retired and able to have more free time other people's retirement age would be irrelevant. Also, imagine if you were able to be happy for someone else getting something good (like retirement) whenever they got it, because it was good for them.

I appreciate your leveled response.
:)
I only got there shortly after doubloons were introduced and although I had plenty to spare and possibly buy my last few levels I decided not to as I had come this far without the need for getting there any quicker.

There are somethings that may or may not help which may be unavoidable if you truly want to play the game. Things such as skull forts or unintentionally joining a crew who are doing an Athena's or even gaining rep through loot that you have stolen or found outside of the quests. Such as PvP, shipwrecks, treasure washed to shore, messages in a bottles & journals.
So, to a degree, there really isn't any "legit" way unless you've avoided all of the above which is pretty unlikely and almost impossible. There's no telling what another crew member might pick up.

Although achieving the milestone without buying levels gave me a short-lived sense of pride, that is my personal achievement and I was never in a hurry to get there.

Did I ever feel in-superior to PLs who beat me to it? No
Do I feel superior to PLs who cheesed merchants? No
Do I feel superior to PLs who bought their levels? No
Do I feel superior to PLs who got there by fort/server hoping? No
Do I feel superior to non-PLs? No

In fact I have never worn the "Pirate Legend" title.
I have never worn the purple coat.
I have never worn the PL ghost outfit.
I have never purchased or set legendary ship livery, figurehead or sails.
I have been a crew member on PL coloured ships but its theme wasn't my choice.
I admit that I do wear the gold chain peg-leg and hook but only because I like the look of them. I'm not fussed by any other cosmetics in the game. I never have been.

Once we were in a situation, I forget the details but I think it was skeleton ships, where it was suggested that everyone in the two crews wear the pirate legend stuff to tell us apart from the others in the area.
So I wore the purple hat once for that particular event session. lol Total commitment, not.

To me it's a milestone achievement that comes with playing the game. It's unavoidable like most of the long list of achievements.
To be honest, less emphasize has been placed in-game on reaching 50/50/50 than selling X amount of castaway chests. Unless I blinked and missed it.
And even then you're not PL until you talk to all three faction vendors then the dude in the pub.

I am 56, I don't go telling my friends that I made pirate legend in a video game. lol
I think it was something like three weeks later when my son's mate (who has also played SoT) asked if I was PL yet, that my son actually heard it for the first time.

Do I think PLs need more exclusive stuff? Yes, but only in the form of more diverse adventures. Something new and different.
