[Mega Thread] Barrel 2.0

Like many of those here, I think the least we need is an "EMPTY" indicator under the Open Barrel prompt. When stocking a ship at an island you will have the whole crew opening and re-opening empty barrels just to ensure they have been ransacked. The same when swimming around barrel flotsam:

    alt text

Even better, show "Contains N Items" (if it is not "EMPTY") under the Open Barrel prompt on all barrels - both found and on your ship. This will assist the quartermaster on your crew who is checking you have enough supplies of everything.

But, the question now arises: Why have dedicated barrels on the ship at all? Why not be allowed to make any barrel you like contain anything you like. You could still disallow mixing cannonballs, planks and bananas. And there could still be max capacity for the ship as a whole. The painted "stencils" on a ship's barrel could even automatically appear depending on what has been put inside it.

    Hello,

    Where to start...

I think that new interface is not a good idea because he wasting lot of time... and I'm not the only one...

Many players gave there view but you care... So, I think a lot will stop and wait for change.

Personally, I'll come back after seeing a change.

I hope you change that stupidity.

Until this is fixed I wont be playing again, simple as that. You have taken something that worked and ruined it by adding something that really didnt need adding to the game.

I think they needed to change it to accommodate finding cursed cannonballs in any barrel? I haven't played yet, though.

Cursed cannon balls didn't need to be in the game is what I am saying. If they really have to be in the game then they should have their own seperate barrel on the boat and island.

I have several suggestions on improving this, the most important of which are...

    1. Make it obvious when a barrel is empty by putting as much on the outside of the barrel as it was previously.

    2. Keep the banana/planks/cannonball barrels on the ships the same old system for quickly grabbing items. In PVP every second lost is the difference in living/dying, sinking/staying afloat. Just make a new section of barrels on the ship with this inventory system for the cursed cannonballs, new items, etc.

    3. Allow you to switch to a cursed cannonball from normal cannonballs without having to hop off the cannon. Maybe with the inventory wheel being accessed while holding the cannon and it being specific to cannonballs.

    4. Give us a grab all option that simply fills whatever open slots you have in your inventory when accessing barrels.

    5. Make resources the first screen on tab instead of equipment. When we need a banana quickly, say when doing OOS and skellys are behind you, at least let us grab the food item first.

There's more, but these are the major changes that have to come to make this system more fluid.

  • 1

Return the barrel system to the way it was before and just add a new cursed cannonball barrel with the new UI that’s located next to the current cannonball barrel.

Im Pirate Legend and Athena 10!

    Worst patch ever!
New barrel system is terrible! Complicate everything!

Pls dont introduce Cursed Cannonballs to Pirates ... Give it to Skell Ships but not the players! Now in PvP ist who shoot first automatic win!

You destroy your whole game with 1 patch!

I will stop playing till this nonsense is undone

  • 1

Roll back please too many issues. Some of us have set targets to reach lv 10 Athena before we go on holiday... PVP is also broken. Common sense please DEVS.

    Thoughts on the new system.

    THE GOOD
#1 - The "idea" behind the new system is great! I appreciate the idea RARE is going for. I think they are trying to get away from the "limitations" of the old system. It allows more flexibility on their end to add new items to the game without constantly adding "barrels" for each new item type.

#2 - Cursed Cannonballs are a great new feature. It actually makes it so you can use cannonballs and only cannonballs to sink another ship. Which is awesome. Obviously, it takes coordination to this, but the meta before was "board, drop anchor, run around on the ship and bunny hop, sword lunge, grab more bananas, stay alive and distract" while your ship gets more hits on the enemy ship or a gunpowder keg.

    THE BAD
#1 - The new barrel system needs fine-tuning. Adding an "empty" tag for the barrel when empty is absolutely needed.

#2 - Adding a quick grab function back in for barrels. Could be a "tap" and pull the first resource in the barrel. (ie. for ship combat, if you run to the banana barrel and quick tap on it. It will give you a banana.) If you "hold" down on a barrel it will open the menu. I don't recommend a "take all" option. That makes it TOO easy to clean out another ship of supplies.

#3 - Switch the "Resources" and "Equipment" in the new "tab" menu. The tab menu should display resources first.

    OVERALL
Like I mentioned I like the idea behind it all. It just needs fine tuning. Keep it up RARE! I know this system will improve so no salt here mates. Bummed I have to play a week with this mess though but I will be playing NON THE LESS! :)

  • 1

@jonoz1982 as the Athena quests are broken... AGAIN! can't feed pigs and doesn't give chapter two for cursed chest.

  • 1

@alexbirdeye I 100% disagree. It's still skill based. You just have to account for the cursed cannonballs coming your way. I am legend too and love the new addition.

  • 6

This patch has totally ruined the game for me, seriously, it has ruined it. Cursed cannon balls are the stupidest addition you could have made. They should have disappeared from the game when Cursed Sails finished.

I would have just sucked it up and got on with it if the inventory system had not been utterly destroyed to add them into the world.

  • 3

Great patch! Love it, because Rare shows me that the decision to stop playing SoT was the right one.

Get your act together, Rare. Nearly everyone hates the new feature. Act accordingly.

  • 1

I like the idea... However I feel that PC players already have a pretty big advantage in this game and this barrel inventory system just leveraged that advantage even more so in their favor. For PC players it's simple point and click where Xbox players have to scroll over through each item. Rare, you have done an amazing job with this game. And the idea of being the most fair MMO out there is simply fantastic. But until you can find a way to keep PC players from having a major advantage over Xbox players and bring in a harsher system for deterring hackers, this game will never be what it could be.

  • 3

i play sinc early alpha and i most say that new barrel loot system is so horrible it make me wanna stop playing its slow everything now you cannot pick banana while running it consume time its more complicated for no reason you dont even know if a barrel is empty ... i dont like it, i think it should be has simple has adding a lot for curse cannonball and 1 barrel on boat to put them and the only place with a special inventory choise should be that cursed cannonball barrel all other barrel should stay the same they were before

    This post is deleted!

I think it could work if:
We can remap leaving the UI to any key or button.
    The Empty caption returns.

  • 0

How could this take longer to stock your ship? I would guess it would be faster. Did you guys not add a "take all" button to the barrels?

  • 2

Gotta say I also despise the new barrel system. It goes against the very fluid, fast paced feel of the game. Before, we were constantly running around spamming keys picking up stuff instantly. Now were in more menus than an RPG game. Please revert. Cursed cannonballs are not worth dealing with this terrible new inventory system. It doesn't match the spirit of the game.

Also, if the pioneers did their jobs, the devs and RARE should have some humble pie and make sure to listen next time. Or remove the fake system. This is an atrocious update. If the pioneers didn't do their jobs, find new ones.

Edit: Also, the menu keybinds are hardcoded, so people that rebind keys still have to use the keys assigned, with no option to change them. Honestly this has gone from a fun, fast, polished game, to an Early Access mess.

  • 3

I do not like the inventory update, takes too long to loot and when doing fort you cant just run by and snag some bananas or even during pvp when on someone elses ship. I have been playing since the betas and am level 10 athenas, so all ive been doing the last efw weeks is grinding chests for commendations now they've been lessened :/ wasted time and effort. Feel like playing now is pointless, nothing left to do and the inventory system is super dumb. RIP :(

  • 3

Still seeing a lot of people misplacing blame on Pioneers. Unfortunately, what we're learning today is that the Pioneers complained about the new system, and even after the delay this is still what was still pushed through.

This change is 100% on Rare. I can tell you for a fact that Pioneers gave feedback about this, early and often.

  • 0

I think if the ships can go back to the hold item in hand to store method and quick inventory pull from the same ship barrels to keep boat pvp the same as before everyone prob wouldnt mind the rest of the inventory system from looting islands. Thats what would satisfy my thoughts on it. Just make the boat back to high speed sense those still only store 1 specific item.

@micro666 said in [Mega Thread] Barrel 2.0:

    @musicmee Hi Musicmee,

Sorry, but there is no way being able to store 12x99 in each resource barrel on your ship is an intended feature.

I agree it's not a bug, but I also don't think it's intentional either. I'm a Pioneer like yourself, so we know the feedback there, but it's just wrong to allow that many resources per ship.

It has to be changed. Maybe allow 99 of a particular item type per barrel is the simple answer, then it would be as before.

That would result in 99 bananas, 99 pineapples (when they add them), 99 coconuts in a food barrel.

99 normal cannonballs, and 99 of each type of cursed.

    Simple solution

pioneer item leak confirmed... pineapples and cocounuts :O

    lol gg

Please fix it so you can just grab cannonballs out of a barrel or load them into a barrel "on the go", Which on PC use to mean spamming the F or R key and then running away, now you have to menu dive during ship battles and ship stocking which is a cumbersome chore.
You can keep the new organizing system in, but make it optional upon request ie: (a specific button command)

  • 1

So far the new system is horrible on console and controller, you have made a relatively simply item grab/storing system over complicated to the point where it is now slow and cumbersome to do basic things.

    1. You cant see what or how many items are stored unless you open the barrel system.
    2. Storing and retrieving items is so slow now, imagine being in a battle and needing to grab bananas, cannon balls or wood to repair quickly and instead you are losing seconds in a pointless menu.
    3. Feels like this was designed for the speed of a keyboard and mouse rather than xbox controller and that makes this new system intolerable and not even a matter of getting "used" to it, it is slow and intrusive and actually makes the game less in an event where PvP has been made the main goal.
    4. You need to have it show if a barrel is empty as its just redundant to have to spend extra seconds to see there is nothing in there
    5. You have made it possible to hold almost 100 cannon balls of both standard and cursed...but still only 5 bananas and 5 planks...do you see how clownish you are making your own game look?

Oh not to mention the fact that Athena Voyages are now broken as well so, yeah...standard RARE move following two positive content drops to suddenly undo all that good will and put this full game back into Alpha level shenanigans.

  • 1

    Hello,
I do not want to be unkind so I'm going to make it simple ; you ask to the alpha and beta tester to play on a server to give their opinions, but you don't listen what they tell you.
The consequence that will have that update it's : decrease in the number players, bad opinion about the game, and maybe the end of the game.
I think it would be necessary to go back.
About the event, you force the PVP, but you thought of people avoiding it ? It's not fair play, the real pirates had no map to find their opponents.
I will come back if you change that s**t.

  • 0

@daantjebnl nope. I think it's fine. It doesn't add as much time as people are complaining about. It would be nice to have an "empty" indicator on the barrels, but other than that I have no issues with the changes. Yes, grabbing supplies on the run from players/skellies will take getting used to, but it's certainly not game-breaking in any way.

    Just a quick thought:

If we would revert to the old system, would the implementation of curseballs to the game still work from a gameplay perspective (considering a Player can only hold 10 balls at a time and a barrel 100)?

The answer is yes it would.

Purely from a gameplay perspective; With the old system players would just have to think of what they want to carry around or store in their barrels.
You either carry up to ten curseballs or ten normal balls on you.
Same with ships, either have a barrel of up to a hundred curseballs (of one type e.g. anchorball) or a hundred normal balls.

I personally wish it would be like this, now.. if the goal is to expand on that existing system and allow a Pirate to carry multiple cannonball types at once, say 1 Anchorball, 2 Grogballs and 7 normal cannoballs, the only change needed would be an option to flick through the different types of balls within the radial wheel or by adding a third page to the wheel.

The only time i see the new popup menu being useful, actually needed, is when we store multiple cannonball types in a single barrel on our ship.
Then and only then it makes sense to, i don't know, press and hold the retrieve button which opens up the popup menu from which you retrieve or store your dedired cannonball type.
If you are in a hurry or don't care what balls the barrel will dispense you can still just walk up to the barrel and repeatedly press the retreive button to gather up to ten balls for your personal inventory (likewise emptying your inventory by holding the item in your hand and hitting the store button would remain the same).

Does that make sense to anyone (i'm not great at explaining things)?

I honestly don't know why the Design Team didn't think of this (as this could also be applied to food items and other items in the future as well), but then again i'm not a gamedesigner.

To me this menu is just clunky and the amount of stuff you can carry/store is way too much.

    EDIT:
I think my primary gripe with the new system is that the number of items a player or batrel can hold is too high.

Keeping the carry limit to ten (or a hundred for barrels) will lead to a more interesting game mechanic/meta in my opinion.

  • 4

Great for gathering supplies since there's multiple resource types in one single barrel.
Horrible for stocking and using supplies on your ship. I don't want to go through a menu to get planks from a barrel which sole purpose is to dispense planks while my boat is sinking.

    • Keep the menu for barrels in the world, but not the ship.
    • Add an unique barrel for cursed cannonballs. Add cursed cannonballs to the inventory wheel.
    • Add a "store all" / "take all" to the menus.
  • 3

I understand there needed to be some kind of inventory for packing in the new cannonballs and having storage on rowboats, but having the barrels on your ship be slow to access chests without the ability to count what you have on board at a glance is horrible. If the barrels on board can only hold the one thing still anyway there is no reason to have them upgraded, add a new chest with the inventory system to store the new cannonballs. Don't mess up what isn't broken to accommodate a new system, the old system doesn't need to be removed just for the new one.

Well said. There are so many barrels on ship as it is why not put cursed cannonballs in a complete different barrel. How was this not expressed during testing, plus y'all had an extra week of development.

  • 0

It was a bit awkward at first, but it isn't terrible, IMO. I can see the need to split the stock for cannonballs. As far as not being able to tell if a barrel is empty before opening it, it's more realistic because you can't see through it. As for it being a waste of time, we're talking about a video game. It's ALL a waste of time. Also, as long as everyone has to do the same thing to stock or grab supplies, I don't see how this is a game changer.

I am guessing the view for x-box and PC are different? I hear about this wheel and extra clicks and I'm not seeing it.

Cursed cannon balls are far more available than I thought they would be. I spent a couple of hours on solo and had 14 or 15 of various types.

  • 2

I’ve been playing for 4 hours trying to get used to the barrel system but I just can’t, it’s clunky, slow and just not very user friendly. Old system is way better!!

  • 3

Horrible idea and completely clunky and slow. A secondary item wheel (like we have with quest maps) would have been a better implementation. And it could have been customizable by us so we can pick and choose which cursed cannon balls we want to access quickly. Instead it now takes twice as long as before to stock your ship, make repairs, and just simply see what you have on your person.

I was discussing it with my friends and I believe we have a potential solution. The aspects of the previous barrels that were established and things we liked about them was that it was really easy to tell what was in them at a glance and how quick it was to extract those items. I propose that as you look at a barrel, a smaller version of the UI automatically floats above it, but contains only 3 or some items that appear as pictures. Then you can choose to hit X to open up the UI or even take whatever is in the first slot or hit another button like C to Take All that you can carry. It allows to slightly larger variance in barrels, but allows the user to have instant responses in how they retrieve items. Obviously, what I propose needs to be tweaked to work with whatever you all have and whatever else you discover is important to players, but I think it would help in regaining what was lost by adding a new window that opens up. Also, turning the barrels on ships back to the previous "one type, one button extraction" thing would be better. I find it weird that you need a UI to pull only cannonballs from a barrel that is clearly marked only for cannonballs. Maybe have just a multi-item barrel next to it or have one of the current barrels become a multi-item barrel so that way you can organize where those cursed cannonballs go in times of battle.

  • 0

okay, this isn't as bad as I thought it would be. I can still scavenge barrels pretty quickly. All they need to do is simply add a get all option and it just gets whatever it can out of the barrel. this would make it faster than it was originally.
